Game: So, if Linda had only recorded one LP with NR, picking from the 32 songs within the trio, what would make the final cut? 12 songs max(or 48 minutes of music max) We have a Las Canciones Favoritas...maybe Rhino could release a Best of the Nelson Riddle sessions, handpicked by Linda.

Since compiling my list and creating the 12 track abum (somewhere up there)as a playlist it has been blowing my mind to listen to... Perfection. I would say that 'I'm A Fool To Want You' has, over the past year or so, risen to become one of my favourite Linda Ronstadt tracks (even closing in on the best from Hasten Down The Wind - and I'm a well documented super fan of HDTW)... the vocal performance is so fine so wonderfully controlled, the Riddle arrangement positively spine-tingling and Don Grolnick provides the tenderist playing to blend it all together. The whole thing has a beautiful Film Noir edge. I'm a huge Sinatra fan but this version knocks spots off his own amazing version of this song.

Linda has gone on record choosing “it never entered my mind” and “what’s new” as tracks she’d want people to hear. She’s also praised Nelson’s arrangement for “my funny valentine” as a personal favorite of hers.

Tony -- I had a thought.... When this topic came out, it was mentioned that "Jardin Azul" was a collection of the "best" of Linda's Spanish recordings.
We've already had all three of Linda's Nelson Riddle albums put in a two-CD set entitled "Round Midnight" and then there was that Reader's Digest compilation that had a single disc of standards.
WHAT IF ... this instead followed the pattern of "The Complete (sic) Trio Collection"? So you might have Disc 1 be what already exists as Disc 1 of "Round Midnight" (All of "What's New?" and side one of "Lush Life"), Disc 2 is Disc 2 of "Round Midnight" (side 2 of "Lush Life" and then "Sentimental Reasons") and Disc 3 would be the outtakes as it is for "The Complete Trio Collection."
If John Boylan were thinking that there might not be enough to fill out a rarities disc, if I am not mistaken, Linda said she had tried Cole Porter with Nelson Riddle. And it could also include her recordings of "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes," "The Man I Love," her duet with Frank Sinatra on "Moonlight in Vermont," her live medley of "Mister Sandman," "Kalamazoo," "Daddy," "Dream" and "Take Me Back to Track," the live "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now," the version of "Someday My Prince Will Come" from that Disney special on NBC in the 1980s.

That is a good idea, Rick. Not sure if it should be 3 discs unless they can do it inexpensively. The whole concept is good but I think that the key like you said is to get John to find stuff that was not released in this genre. A few "New" ones (songs that have never been released or even on youtube) I think would be the key to a successful release. eddiejinnj

I think the "official" attitude now in the Ronstadt camp is that physical releases are not worth the trouble for the cost of producing them vs revenue earned. We didn't even get an anniversary release for Living in the USA or Mad Love!
I think this would be a good release as would be the original full set from the Troubadour 1972 as well as the KOOM album and I don't think there has ever been a Linda Ronstadt Record Store Day release other than the reissue of Silk Purse which had already been released many many times and it didn't even have any extras.
(my attempt at a run-on sentence)

Tony — What were the sales for the 3-CD “Trio Collection”? Do you know? What about “Live in Hollywood”? The 2-CD 40th anni edition of “Simple Dreams”?

I don't know the numbers for the Trio collection but I remember it charted well in Australia and also the UK.
First week numbers for Live in Hollywood were high enough that it would have been #1 on the Billboard Rock chart. Only problem is Billboard would not classify it as a rock album so it appeared nowhere on the rock chart. But it did sell more physical copies than the Queen collection that they had at #1.
The 40th anniversary CD of Simple Dreams sold moderately well, but apparently not enough to do a similar release for Living in the USA, although I was told one was forthcoming. Just goes to show you can't believe everything you're told, so I'm glad I didn't repeat that rumor.
I expect the announcement of several collectors editions on the first day of the month!

She’s also praised Nelson’s arrangement for “my funny valentine” as a personal favorite of hers. That's interesting to know... it's always intriguing to find out the artistes personal choice, kind of get inside their head a bit. I remember a long time ago when I was a young keen naive fan being a bit let down when Donald Fagen mentioned something about never wanting to hear a Steely Dan album when it is finished and to move straight on to a new project (or something like that) and not look back... totally understandable really. And just the other day I was reading that Sinatra never listened to any of his own music (which didn't surprise me) except for the track 'Wave' from his second collaberation with Jobim because he liked the way he hit the bass notes and played it constantly for a while later in his life. I imagine any artiste can always hear faults and wish they had done something differently, being a perfectionist is what makes them who they are. Rambling :-)

Where/What's the Keeping Out Of Mischief bonus track from? As I recall, Linda recorded it but did not use it on any of the 3 Nelson Riddle albums. The song was offered to the We Are the World project but was not used.

Hi, '70s -- The Nelson Riddle tracks on Linda's box set are: " Little Girl Blue I Get Along Without You Very Well My Funny Valentine When You Wish Upon A Star It Never Entered My Mind Skylark What's New? " We know it exists. It just has never been released. I think that's why Tony and I both mentioned it as a "bonus track" if someone ever did a hypothetical "Best of" compilation. I would think that these seven songs on the box set would be Linda's picks (at least back at that time).

So "Falling in Love Again" popped up on my iPod last night and boy, did I regret not including it on my list.
Linda and Riddle's arrangement swing, and you can almost "hear" Linda winking at herself as she sings "men cluster to me like moths around a flame / and if their wings burn I know I'm not to blame."
