I work as a page at the Hastings Branch of the Pasadena Public Library; and just before I left work, we were told that our libraries will be closed to the public, but that the staff will do the regular library business: taking books out of the book deposit boxes; sorting; shelving, etc. We are working with plastic gloves to prevent any COVID-19 contamination. In the meantime, all of our libraries will be off-limits to the public probably until the end of this month at least.

Same exact thing with my library, they even covered up the book drops so that people could not drop them off (due dates are suspended for the duration of this situation).. We were told to leave at 11 AM today, and to expect to return the 30th of the month, paid leave...

It's still spreading up here in Atlantic Canada too. Schools are closed for at least 2 weeks and libraries are closed until further notice. There's only about 7 cases so far in my province, glad I'm not in a big city.

It was probably going to come to this anyway; but officialy, the city of San Francisco is on lockdown, at least until April 7th. Three of the six COVID-19 fatalities that have thus far happened in the state of California have happened in that city.

Here in the Dirty South, I expect bread and milk to be cleared of the grocery aisles when we might expect a dusting of snow, but I have never in my life seen the grocery stores picked clean like they are now. I buy groceries almost daily, just getting what I need for the next couple of days. The only thing available was the freshly sliced deli meats. Thank goodness for Boars Head!

Spoke to my Mom today in Ca.. She spoke to her cousin in Mexico and said COVID-19 has hit Mexico too and they are in lock down..Here in Northern Coastal Oregon no dining in for restaurants .. and bridges to Washington (the epicenter) are closed. I'm pretty well stocked with groceries, dog and cat food and necessities for the week. this is crazy ! I walked down to my mailbox other day with a scarf around my face and my 91 yr old neighbor greeted me.. I told her I was recovering from a cold and she jumped back about 2 feet. lol..

I am a good shopper and always have a decent amount of staple food items in stock but i went into the local supermarket last night on my way home to get some extras ..... the shelves were bare! However this is my larder and is enough to keep my going for a while - online supermarket deliveries are not available either at present though ....

What I think most, if not quite yet all, of our supermarkets down here are doing, and I think it's a wise move on their part, is to allow those 65 years or older to get whatever food and supplies they need first, before the general public. As a lot of you have likely seen in your individual parts of the world, people have been basically panic-buying in industrial bulk loads...and unfortunately this puts them in close contact with others, increasing the risk of the virus spreading.
Yes, COVID-19 is a Big Deal, no question about it. But it's incumbent that we don't lose our humanity and our collective minds in the same fell swoop.

As fate would have it, the one thing I don't need is paper products. The only thing I buy from Walmart is paper towels and toilet paper, and I hate going to that store with a passion. So when I do go, I fill up my buggy (or cart as you non-Southerners call it). Of course it only takes two packs of towels to fill up the cart, and then when you put two packs of toilet paper on top of that it's a full load. I haven't needed to replenish during this coronavirus debacle.

Our first day of the shutdown in the Pasadena Public Library system was a relatively good (i.e., quiet) one, though we had people trying to get in, despite the fact that we posted "CLOSED" signs at each entrance. I am taking advantage of this shutdown to totally straighten the place up, since it is usually a mess even on a slow day, while taking care to reduce the risk of exposure to the virus.
I don't envy anyone at this time, though. We are in the worst health crisis America has seen in the last 100 years. But we can get through this by just doing what we can and what we need to do, including helping as much as we can those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Of course it only takes two packs of towels to fill up the cart, and then when you put two packs of toilet paper on top of that it's a full load. I haven't needed to replenish during this coronavirus debacle. Tony, you're lucky. I go to Costco fairly regularly (or used to anyway) because I'm able to get my dog's medications there for much less than from the vet's. The last times I was there, I did NOT buy either toilet paper or paper towels. Big mistake! I've gone to my local Von's (Safeway chain) and the whole aisle with paper products is bare. I've tried different times of the day. No luck. This last Saturday I went to the Trader Joe's near my house, and, while they actually had quite a bit of food items in stock, no sign of paper products. I asked one of the stock clerks, "Am I crazy to ask you if you have any toilet paper?" And she answered, "Yes, you are crazy to ask that question." The cashier told me that the Trader Joe's in Torrance had to close at 3 p.m. the day before because they had nothing left to sell. And other people told me that they have seen lines at Costco waiting to get in before they even open the store and that they have had to close the entrances to parking lots at both the Costco and our Ralph's (Kroger). These are very strange times. I am going to hold off on trying to go out again. I have plenty of food for me and my dog. Also, I tried going online to find paper products. Walgreens.com showed toilet paper as being in stock, I put it in my online cart and there was a $35 minimum to get free delivery so I added some other items to meet that threshold. I received an email that they had shipped everything but the toilet paper. And then a few hours later, I got an email that said they were not going to ship the toilet paper. I called them on this because this is classic "Bait and Switch." At least when I go to Costco.com or Amazon, they say that toilet paper is out of stock. I feel that Walgreen's just does this in order to sell other items. The supervisor I spoke with on the phone gave me a full refund. My barber told me that he was at a supermarket and the freezer bins were empty EXCEPT for stacks of Hawaiian Pizza! That made me LOL. People can be really desperate to buy out the stores but the one thing they will not tolerate is pineapple on pizza (I actually don't mind it myself).

we have setup a local street WhatsApp group as there are a lot of elderly and vulnerable people around here who are being advised to self-isolate for up to 4 months!
Everyone is trying to be supportive and helpful. whilst also taking care of their own families and needs - my partners film has lost £100k worth of business in the last 2 days and may not survive this crisis despite what the government are claiming to be offering in terms of support for small businesses.
I'm a contractor so my income is looking shaky at present too ...

Save for the essentials (gas stations; markets; food banks, etc.) and for government services, Los Angeles County is officially shut down as of midnight tonight. My own situation in Pasadena hasn't changed: the library is still closed to the public, but employees like myself are allowed to do library business, provided of course that we stay no fewer than six feet from one another and wear gloves in handling library material.
Los Angeles County reported its second COVID-19 fatality today; and it's likely that hundreds if not thousands of other people here will succumb to the virus before we get a handle on it. But we're doing what we can, while still doing our jobs. Work, with safety precautions, is the best thing to lessen the worry, because if there is anything worse than not taking COVID-19 seriously, it is extreme panic (IMHO).

Well, as of this afternoon, all pages and library assistants in Pasadena are being asked to stay home, and only report to work if there is a true disaster.

I was supposed to fly to so ca in april but changing my plans.. Yes. I'm eating lots of vitamin c and veggies too.

I know some people like to "binge watch" stuff on Netflix, but I have my own ideas about that, in the form of watching two or three movies in my vast DVD collection during the lockdown, amounting to between four and four-and-a-half hours worth per day.
Monday's double-bill was DOCTOR STRANGELOVE, followed by SEVEN DAYS IN MAY, both great Cold War classics from 1964. Today's twofer was FAHRENHEIT 9/11, followed by....wait for it...FAHRENHEIT 11/9.

Doctor Strangelove is a classic. Another good but lesser known Cold War thriller is Fail-Safe, also from 1964. I watched One Hour Photo, one of Robin Williams' best serious films. Hope everyone is doing well. Still less than 10 cases in my county. Eating lots of garlic and taking vitamins. Not much to do other than shopping and short walks.

Actually I don't mind the hand-washing so much. Anything to keep me from coming down with COVID-19 that won't interrupt too much of life more than necessary I'm willing to do.

what I'm doing is using the wipe over my right hand/fingers at a ll times when going out...ie. the wipe touches the card reader etc...then wiping the stuff when you bring it inside!!
my germaphobe recording engineer buddy from FLA just sent me a 3M N100....I'm wearing it today...apparently you can sanitize it after each use...he sent me 2 other blue masks a pair of the booties and nitril gloves
CAN YOU BELIEVE we are living this???
I just wanna know how long we're gonna keep this up as a collective! People are really hanging in there!!!

Yesterday, my COVID-19 Lockdown DVD bill of fare was all about 1973: EXECUTIVE ACTION; WESTWORLD; and PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID. Today, it was all about monoliths, malfunctioning computers, and more: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY2010 (the woefully underappreciated sequel)

Simply because I could, I went on a three-DVD binge today, with three of the best films of the last two and a half years. I'm sure at least one of them has been seen by everyone here (LOL):
