Just checked my Twitter feed - MTT and members of the SF Symphony Chorus entertained Linda at her home yesterday. Search for tweets from Michael Tilson Thomas and you'll see the pics. Happy Holidays all.

And a merry Christmas to you too Fab! White Christmas in the UK? Brown Christmas here in the Arizona desert.
Also a merry Christmas to all here and those who used to be among us including Harold Wilkinson (wherever he is) who shared so much Ronstadt material and insights into the music business.
Here is the Christmas special where the Ronstadt clips were posted on Harold's late Ronstadt download center site. (now defunct)

I'm sorry. You can't say "Merry Christmas" anymore. It's a new America: diverse, multicultural, inclusive. When you say "Merry Christmas," you offend atheists, liberals, Muslims, Jews, Satanists, Marxists, skinny vegetarians, and midgets. I hope that you can sleep at night knowing that you've offended many thousands of people. Heh, heh, heh, heh. Merry Christmas to you all, even to the liberals who you've no doubt really, really offended. -----

jeff3 you grinch...I'm going to stereotype you into the stereotyper category, as defined by vocabulary.com: stereotypeA stereotype is a preconceived notion, especially about a group of people. Many stereotypes are rooted in prejudice — so you should be wary of them.
You have probably heard stereotypes: commonly held ideas or preconceptions about specific groups. You most often hear about negative stereotypes, but some are positive — the stereotype that tall people are good at basketball, for example. One of many problems with any stereotype is that even if it's true in some cases, it's certainly not true in all cases.
Oh, and belated Merry Christmas Happy Holidays to everyone!

For all the turbulence we had in 2019, it was still a very good year because of Linda making her way back into prominence. Even if she had her doubts about it, Live In Hollywood was still a great recording. THE SOUND OF MY VOICE is tied with APOLLO 11 for my favorite movie of the year. And finally, the Kennedy Center Honors, where she was saluted by a whole gallery of supporters (Emmylou; Carrie; Trisha; Aaron; Don Henley; Kevin Kline; the ladies of Flor de Toloache), could not, in my opinion, have been pulled off any better.
Here's hoping 2020 can be even better.

I'm sorry. You can't say "Merry Christmas" anymore. I doubt there is anyone here who has ever been attacked for saying Merry Christmas. I have, however, been lambasted (once) for using the phrase Happy Holidays. So now I confuse them with Happy HolyDays. This was a fine general Merry Christmas thread. Why'd you have to bring up this nonsense?

Yes, this so-called "War On Christmas" is a ridiculous, godawful f***ing farce perpetrated not by us liberal peons, but by right-wing zealots whose deity isn't God or Jesus, but the Almighty Dollar. They have perverted the Christmas season into one of consumerism, greed, and spending, and left love, light, and happiness out of everything; and as such, they deserve to be called out for the phonies that they are.

Well, I think it is obvious that the true "reason for the season" is to boost the annual economy. Everything else is just window dressing for the annual economic boom. It's a shame that even Xmas gets politicized.

We here in Southern California got a monster surprise "gift" on Christmas night in the form of a very vigorous storm that came straight out of Alaska and just plowed right through with heavy rain, wind, hail, a small twister (that touched down in Ventura)...and snow all over the mountains and a large swath of the Mojave Desert, ranging anywhere from six inches on the desert floor to close to six feet in the San Bernardino Mountains. Mount Wilson, which is above Pasadena at an elevation of 5700 feet, has close to two feet of snow on its summit, making the TV transmission towers and our scientific observatories up there gleam blindingly white in the sun. It is really quite a sight to see....not to mention having the effect of turning this part of the world into a temporary mini-refrigerator.

I agree 100%. Yes. Christmas has been perverted. In 1955, Christmas was about loved ones -- and of course Christ if you're into that sort of thing. Today, "The Holiday That Nobody Says!" is about taking 8 credit cards and going to Bloomingdales or Sears to buy shiny objects and Chinese junk for people you probably hate. To quote Black Flag: "Gimme, gimme, gimme, I need some more!" Indeed.

If you think winter weather is bad in Southern California, you should see Atlantic Canada. It's about 15 degrees F now which is warmer than average for nearly January. We have snow on the ground from about mid November to early May. Strong winds make cold days even worse.

There has been a lot of discussion in general not in here as I happened upon this re: using "Happy Holidays" vs saying Merry Christmas as there is a chance that you will say MC to someone who does not celebrate Christmas or maybe any of the quote religious/cultural holidays (New Year's excluded). So there is some commonsensical attributes to the HH thing but also on the other hand it should be not be an insult for somebody to say merry Christmas to you. Happy Holiday Season

Quote by germancanadian:
Quite true. I would also point out that us Southern Californians are so used to temperatures in the 70s (occasionally in the 80s) even in December that, when the temperatures barely reach 50 degrees above zero during the day, we freak out. That's the absolute truth. And when it rains and snows like crazy, as it did on Christmas night, we go stark raving bonkers. Most of us are not that good with winter weather as the rest of the world knows it.
But personally, I like it. It makes a nice change from sweating under a palm tree with Christmas lights like so many like to do.

Erik, the Arizona desert is getting what you just got. Really really cold and we received over 2" of rain in the past couple of days which is a record for us. I can't handle this cold though. Then again, I hate the summer heat. Hate both lol. There must be a place in the world that is mild year round. (besides indoors) At least we didn't get snow (knock on wood).

I always wondered why saying Happy Holidays was suddenly such a bad thing, when historically the sentiment has been written in Cards and Songs galore. After all, there are multiple Holidays throughout December, not just Christmas.
Dec 15 - National Cat Herders Day (for reals!) Dec 21 - Winter Solstice (Pagan holiday from ancient times) Dec 22 - Chanukah (Jewish Hanukkah for 8 days!) Dec 25 - Christmas (not the real birth date of Jesus...) Dec 26 - Kwanzaa (African American 7 day feast!) Dec 31 - New Year's Eve & Day (National)
So yea, Happy Holidays to everyone, including those who are not Straight, White, Rich, (supposedly) Christian, Conservative Males.

Happy Holidays is bad? Best General term. I thought that is the best thing to say to now is Happy Holidays because it is more inclusive well especially obviously when we don't know someone well or strangers. I have never in my life thought there was anything wrong with happy holidays as a kid or now. I kind of had cool early multi-religion contact. I went k- part of second grade in a school district with a lot of Jewish residents. I even had kindergarten in a Temple and I went to public school. So of course I know the Jewish holidays and respect their importance etc. When I moved the district was predominantly Christian but I still at times hesitiated saying "Merry Christmas" thinking one time I may be wrong as just a few districts away it was a consideration. Sorry to be long but now I just think if something is wished cheerfully with good nature whatever it is we just all just have fun as life is so short. Far as i'm concerned just say Peace bout covers it for me!!!! This has been a tough season for me. My first since losing Big Ed, my Energizer Bunny Daddy. I'm little intriqued about your special shout outs in your happy holiday wish list, Belle lol. Hope you had a great holiday season so far. Great to see ya back. Doesn't everyone think that the older you get that Christmas just seems to come and go faster. Probably just perception but that is life. Whatever anyone's is of me only "The Shadow" knows (boy my Grandmother lives on). eddiejinnj

Quote by eddiejinnj:
I myself have no objection to "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays". They're just greetings after all, and so appropriate for this particular time of year. But starting at Christmas 2001, the very first Christmas following the 9/11 attacks, it got to be so poisonously politicized by the Far Right in general, and fanatical evangelicals in particular, in their never-ending but always-stupid "Culture War" against the so-called "liberal media", combined with it becoming almost all about consumerism. greed, and corporate profits. This is the same cockamamie crap we have rehashed every year since 9/11; and it's only gotten worse with the Mango One.

Yes, they are expecting at least a foot of snow at the top of the hill. Down here in the valley I have only seen snow once or twice in 45 years. We did get some hail two weeks ago. That was a shocker. Expect anything with global warming caused climate change. Nothing but erratic weather.
