For one I would really like to see the list of dates. Sometime in mid January 1969 Linda played at Michigan Tech University. For all but a few people who are familiar with my Alma Mater, this essentially all male engineering school was (and is) Located in far northern upper peninsula of Michigan overlooked lovely Lake Superior (yes I have seen the Edmund Fitzgerald pass thru Portage Canal) But I digress. Anyway I didn't see the concert as it (the concert) was a ball or dance for A: Not lowly freshmen and B:You needed a date. Anyway the Linda's performances was roundly panned apparently she used foul language-which I can believe and got drunk which knowing a bit about Linda's drinking habits I find implausible. Oh and she -gasp!-played county music. I can find no record anywhere of this performance. So I was curious if it really was Linda (we have had fake bands there before) my only hint that it may have really been Linda is a couple years layer the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band appeared and Jeff Hanna expressed trepidation about playing here since we "treated our friend Linda Ronstadt so badly" It was a great concert with the soothing smell of doobies in the air and we were forgiven. But I still wonder about the performance I missed.

You might be surprised at how many people come here looking for those concert dates. If you have whoever else was on the bill that night it might be of interest too. Good job!

Eddie pointed out to me that the heading should actually be 1966-1968-- I even have an article from 1968, so I will fix that.
The page about the Stone Poneys playing University of Utah had some comments about her bad language, her short skirt. Most of the complaints seemed to be from the female students. Of course, I am assuming the Univ of Utah would have a lot of conservative students.
I'll try to get those concert dates added later tonight.

The other act was "The Pair Extraordinaire" a musical duo whom I have never heard of before or since. This is according to the MTU propaganda organ (school paper) -The Lode. Also affectionately known as Da Load. This was at one time a big (underground) copper mining area hence the name of the paper. Being from AZ you are no doubt familiar with copper mining. 500

And you are correct there were two shows thanks for jogging my failing memory. You are even forgiven for misspelling Houghton (damned spell check I'll wager --my ancient nemesis.) Seriously I truly appreciate the effort. Now does anyone know who the musicians were for that your? Yeah I know -never satisfied By the way how did anyone find my family photo posted above?

I have added to the Stone Poneys page all the Stone Poneys live appearances I could find. I think I might have one that needs correcting. A concert at the Troubadour with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is reviewed in the June 24, 1967 issue of Cash Box magazine. The review doesn't give the date, only that it was a Thursday night. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band appeared at the Troubadour from June 6 through June 11, and from June 13 through June 18. So I put the appearance as June 15, the nearest Thursday to the issue date. But it does not make sense that the Stone Poneys would be in Detroit on June 13, fly out to California for a date on the 15th, return to Detroit on the 18th. Maybe the date with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was on Thursday, June 8. Maybe the Detroit dates are incorrect, but they were reported in a newspaper or magazine at the time. Maybe I obsess too much.

Linda and the Dirt Band go back a long way. She recorded Some Of Shelley's Blues before they did but they had the bigger hit out of it. Lots of cross pollination here.

Quote by ronstadtfanaz:
Another point of interest: The Dirt Band, at least in 1968, was on something of a hiatus because they had gone through a massive ordeal having been on the Oregon set of the Joshua Logan-directed film PAINT YOUR WAGON. Jeff Hanna, who was then and still is one of the original members of the group, temporarily joined Linda's first post-Stone Poneys backing band The Corvettes, but then went back to the Dirt Band when they got back together in 1969. Hanna's replacement in the Corvettes was one Bernie Leadon, who already had a sizeable track record, including even appearing as a session musician on all three Stone Poneys albums, but also noted for his work with Hearts and Flowers; Dillard and Clark (to wit, Doug Dillard [Leadon's mentor on bluegrass banjo] and ex-Byrd Gene Clark), and the San Diego-based bluegrass outfit the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers (with Chris Hillman).

Linda and the NGDB their heads on bee bodies kind of like Genesis' "Land of Illusion". Cross pollinating Wildflowers!!! I forgot that Hanna was in The Corvette's. Thanks, Erik. Other than the Stone Poneys, I never associate Linda with a band name eg: Neil Young had quote solo albums and ones with Crazy Horse. I guess with the Nelson albums they of course had to acknowledge him and HIS orchestra so again I didn't think Linda as having the band. I am Ramblin' 'Round so I say adieu!!! eddiejinnj

Very pretentious critics back in the '60s. I just read a review of Johnny Cash by of all people, Rex Reed. Of Cash, he says: "... he has almost no vocal equipment whatsoever." "It is not my kind of music, but Johnny Cash sings it with all the howl and the torment of a wounded coyote bleeding to death in the Texas sunshine." If it's not his kind of music, he should not review it and should not venture an opinion. Rex wrote a whole page about the Liza Minelli album. That's more his wheelhouse. I think after reading a few issues I can now identify who is writing the review. Reading a scathing review of Judy Collins, scathing before he even mentions the music, I recognized his style. Here is a response from a reader of the magazine: Here's his review of a Skeeter Davis album, but he seems more interested in her wardrobe than the music. It's one of my favorite albums because I collect albums with singer posing with pigs on the cover.

After reading the Stone Poneys review from 1967, I was tempted to look up and email this Peter Reilly dude and ask him WTF was he thinking. Then I thought he would be an old codger by now; he may have even already left this earthly veil. So instead, I just kept scanning the issues of Stereo Review. It's hard to believe he is the same guy who wrote the review below of the LP Linda Ronstadt in the May 1972 issue. It's almost like he forgot that earlier review, or maybe he changed his mind. When this album was released, I was a student at Clemson University. My roommate played this album almost every day until I was so tired of hearing it. I did like the album though. My favorite cut was Rescue Me. His least favorite cut was Rescue Me, so he stopped before that song played.

Overall, though, I do not like this Peter Reilly character. He totally trashed one of my favorite albums, God Bless Tiny Tim. Then he totally trashed Tiny Tim's 2nd Album. And he keeps mentioning Tiny Tim in other unrelated reviews just to get in another dig. He obviously does not get Tiny Tim- someone else needs to review those albums.
I did find this remark about After the Goldrush album by Neil Young interesting, because I have never been able to listen to that song until Linda Ronstadt released it on her 1995 album Feels Like Home.
Reilly said:
He reviewed several Ronstadt albums- Best of the Month reviews for Linda Ronstadt, Heart Like a Wheel, and Lush Life.
Overall, really enjoying going through these old issues. Makes me remember a lot of music I forgot about, and discovering new music.

My sister remembers seeing The Stone Poneys at a free concert on the beach in Des Moines Iowa in Approx. 1968. We can’t find any info on this. Does anyone remember this? Any help would be great! Thanks!
