Fitting that, however flawed it must have seemed and however much Linda may disown it, this album is one of the earliest examples of alt-country/Americana.
I thought her version of the John D. Loudermilk standard "Break My Mind" was a great example of how Linda approached honky-tonk C&W/rock, where you couldn't have mistaken her for anybody else, even Loretta Lynn. That was my choice.

So many great choices on this album, the first Linda album to get my attention. Somehow Different Drum had not made it into my consciousness. Of course it was a gift... I didn't really discover this title.

So many great choices on this album, the first Linda album to get my attention. Somehow Different Drum had not made it into my consciousness. Of course it was a gift... I didn't really discover this title.
When I saw Linda in concert April 1972 she sang 4 songs from this album. Our university athletic team's name was Eagles and the first I ever heard of the group was during that concert. She said "Is your team named Eagles?" to which everyone yelled YEAH. She then said "Far Out. I have friends in a group called Eagles and I gotta have one of those shirts man." She tried to get a guy from the dorm (Steve) to give her his football team jersey but he wouldn't do it even after she offered to trade something for it lol. Everyone was like COME ON STEVE, GEEZ. So I had one made up and mailed it to her. Steve thought he would get into trouble as he was new to the football team, a freshman, etc. That was his excuse anyway. Seems like yesterday but it is 47 years ago already.
A few months later Eagles was topping the charts and Steve could've kicked himself. Eagles came to campus a little over a year later with a few hits under their belt. I was lucky to get right up at the edge of the stage for the concert but got separated from my friends one of whom worked at the school radio station. So I went back to the dorm and waited and waited but they never showed so I went to bed only to find out next morning that they got invited to party with the group back at their motel with some others. Man was I disappointed I missed out on that! But then I found out they were smoking up and stuff and that was never my style so I was kind of glad I missed it. At least they did ask them about Linda for me so that was good. Oh, soon after that concert they recorded that great televised concert with Linda and Jackson . Anyway, they went to our student center and bought Eagles football jerseys. Randy was wearing his during that concert. More to the story but here is that concert. my.mail.ru/inbox/vl-promsij/video/70692/217863.html?related_deep=1 my.mail.ru/inbox/vl-promsij/video/70692/217862.html?related_deep=1 Eagles Live 1974 Full Don Kirschner Show With Linda Ronstadt And Jackson Browne (sorry, getting way off subject here)
