Not sure but I'm guessing it's a combination of record sales and cultural influence. I don't agree with many of the positions. Putting Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Carrie Underwood, and Beyoncé ahead of legends like Linda, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Heart and Joni Mitchell is insulting. Janis Joplin, Dolly, Emmylou and Stevie Nicks should have been on the list.

Hard to believe anyone would pick Britney Spears over Stevie Nicks.

Quote by moon:
Only until you start to think that the people doing this came of age during the rise of Madonna, and thus claim that those women like Britney, Beyoncé, and Rihanna who have come since Madonna are a bigger deal than Stevie or Diana or Joni, or, for that matter, Linda. Culturally, Madonna and her avatars may be a bigger deal than Linda; but I don't think that's actually something to be proud of. When you factor in how many women Linda has influenced, combined with the fact that she had a hand in bringing together one of the biggest post-Beatles bands in history, namely The Eagles, Linda's achievements will likely outweigh anything Madonna has done by a good stretch (IMHO).

In 1978 which is when Linda was Queen the US population was 225 million. Fast forward it has grown another 100 million with a sizable amount being record buying kids. Add into that the internet and social media happening in the late 90's and streaming plus new methods of listening and purchase opened things up for the new flavors of the day.
As far as Streisand and some other tried and true artists high numbers if they go by record sales I can't help but think unless a record company and distributors are being accurate their artists may fall behind. They may not really care when someone is off contract or label to pursue those ratings. Streisand is pretty darn good to boot so that never hurts. Plus she has that movie thing going on and is not afraid of her politics.

Oh good, Erik is ok. I saw the number 2 and thought man he is not going to be happy. I have not read the comments for this thread yet. I just saw Erik's post and replied. These lists, imo, are difficult to accurately come up with. Madonna was listed as the number 2 artist of all time including males, groups, etc but she is number 5 in females. For at least 10 yrs or more if I am correct, Linda was number 2 behind Streisand. I just don't understand how Adele, who has what 3 albums out and albums have not been selling as well since she became known could be so high on the list. I would not think that Janet Jackson would be higher than Linda. Not sure how many Britney has out but she has been around recording since like 2001. Janis, I would say just didn't have enough output to make the list maybe. Miley, I would not have guessed would be in contention no less how high but in that case I just may not of heard much of her work at all. These things really are arbitrary and not 100% accurate. eddiejinfl

Here is how Billboard explained the methodology at www.billboard.com/articles/events/greatest-of-all-time/8053982/madonna-barbra-streisand-leann-rimes-adele-greatest-of-all-time-charts-hot-100-billboard-200:Barbra Streisand is the all-time queen of the Billboard 200 (since Aug. 17, 1963, when separate stereo and mono listings were combined into one weekly survey). She has logged 34 top 10 albums, the most among soloists, including 11 No. 1s, the most among women. Taylor Swift is the No. 2 Billboard 200 female artist. Billboard's woman of the year for 2011 and 2014 arrived on the chart in 2006 and has posted twin 11-week leaders (2008's Fearless and 2014's 1989) among her dominant discography, which includes her newest and fifth topper, Reputation. Rounding out the top five, Swift is followed by, in order, Carey, Houston (the woman with the most total weeks atop the Billboard 200: 46) and Madonna. Adele (the No. 6 female artist) reigns with the top Billboard 200 album by a woman: 21, which topped the tally for 24 weeks beginning March 12, 2011, the longest rule for an album by a solo female in the chart's history. The rest of the Billboard 200's all-time top five among women: Swift's Fearless (No. 2); Alanis Morissette's 1995 alt-rock opus Jagged Little Pill (No. 3); Carole King's signature 1971 set Tapestry (No. 4); and Swift's 1989 (No. 5). Methodology: The Greatest of All-Time Hot 100 Songs by Women & Billboard 200 Albums by Women, as well as their respective Artists rankings, are based on weekly performance on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart (from its Aug. 4, 1958, inception through Nov. 4, 2017) & Billboard 200 albums chart (from Aug. 17, 1963, through Nov. 4, 2017). Songs & Albums are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value & weeks at lower spots earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, eras are weighted differently to account for chart turnover rates over various periods. Artists are ranked based on a formula blending performance, as outlined above, of all their respective chart entries. Songs included are sung entirely by a female credited as a lead artist or are duets in which a solo female is credited. Albums included are by solo females or groups in which vocals are primarily female. Artists include female soloists, as well as duos or groups in which vocals are primarily female.

Purely a sales analysis albums and singles. Ronstadt is 20 of all time. Pretty impressive for someone who hasn't had a hit single in 30 years, is a reluctant promotor of her own work, no heavy online presence ( that has changed somewhat recently). Where everyone is much younger or a Streisand/Franklin legendary talents but certainly showboaters. Very encouraging (lol).
