Sad news in the music world, as we have lost another great musician and member of an iconic rock band like The Monkees. Peter is now with Davy Jones, and Mike Nesmith and Mickey Dolenz are now the only surviving members.
I remember when Davy died of a heart attack nearly seven years ago...February 29, 2012. He was 66 and seemed to be in fairly good health. So that was quite a shock. I used to live in Beavertown, PA, where Davy had a home and an old church that he was renovating and turning into a rock music museum. The church was then purchased by a life-long fan, who planned to make it a memorial to Jones. Sadly, the building burned to the ground in October 2016, destroying all the Davy Jones and Monkees memorabilia she had collected. I had heard about it being rebuilt and people making donations. I actually never met Davy the whole time I lived in Beavertown, which was 1997-2003. It was his seasonal home, so he was only there certain times of the year. It was a horse farm as well and he loved riding his horses there. Although my aunt saw him in the grocery store once and he occasionally had dinner with his neighbors...people my mom knew, as she grew up there. I now live in Mifflinburg, which is about 15 miles away.
I wish I would've had the opportunity to interview Davy, but I wasn't freelance writing yet at the time of his death. I definitely would pursue that if he was living today. I bet Mike and Mickey would be very interesting to interview. It would be nice to see them do some shows and maybe a tour as a tribute to Davy and Peter.

I knew Peter had been ill for some time, but I thought he had beaten his problem with cancer. The last Monkees album was last year's Christmas album, which was mostly by Micky alone. Mike and Peter didn't appear on any of the tracks other than their own. And Rolling Stone tried to hint there was still friction between Mike and Peter, although they had, as always, put their differences behind them. Rolling Stone also hinted that Peter's cancer had returned, which was why he was absent from much of the recording and the then latest round of tour dates. Peter recorded his Christmas at a recording studio owned by June Millington and her husband. June, I believe, and her sister were members of the 70s rock band Fanny. June posted a photo of herself and Peter from that recording session and it was just the one song. He was too ill to do more.
On a personal level, I once received an email from Peter in response to a question I had sent him (via a friend of his)regarding songs he had recorded for Mike's Countryside record company. Elektra had agreed to manufacture and distribute any recordings on Mike and the artists he signed to the label. Nesmith only managed to get releases on two different artists before David Geffen came in as head of Elektra and Asylum. Geffen deep sixed the agreement Elektra had with Nesmith and booted him off and also all the other artists he had signed to his label. It seemed to be personal, though why I don't know. The two never met. Peter didn't know what became of the recordings he had made with the hopes Mike would release them. He suggested contacting Mike and see if he remembered. Unfortunately, I could never find an email address for Mike, and it had been so long it's unlikely he would've remembered.
