With the exception of the exclusion of Heatwave, it's clear Linda selected the tracks that don't date the album by showing her supporting a 1980 album at the time of the recording. The three tracks she left on from Mad Love were all singles.

Based on the discussed space constraints, I do believe she did choose a well-rounded variety of songs (still would have loved "Party Girl" and "Look Out for My Love". Especially the latter. I don't think it would have dated it). eddiejinfl

All the more strange she excluded Heatwave.

Maybe there will be a "Live In Hollywood II" plus some bonus tracks in the near future. Technology may allow for a complete live quality album/cd in the future but the way the industry is going I doubt hard copies of anything will be around at all.

Quote by pricepittsburgh: I would submit then also that they targeted Linda for doing this specifically because she was a woman. Misogyny played a part in this slamming of Linda doing R&B back then (IMHO). Really unfair double standards there. Same thing with Eric Clapton. Half of his music was black but I don't think he was ever accused of "cultural appropriation."

It is difficult to know the exact motivations of music critics. Some may be more obvious than others. I will say though that if you read reviews of recent past and present female vocalists they are not too flattering. Much more negative than anything Linda had to endure. Most of Linda's reviews were quite good but we remember the bad ones mostly. That alone is an accomplishment. Linda's voice and musicianship speaks for itself long after critics have moved on.

The album is number 19 on Amazon now. still good over a month after release. Has anybody seen her on any of the Billboard charts. If we could list the Top Album Sales and Internet Charts plus a couple others that would be great. I wonder what her 3rd week Top Album sales position is. It has been No 7 then No. 22. eddiejinfl
PS: I just looked and it is No 31 3rd week on the Top Albums Chart.

Am loving Billy Payne's piano rolls on Just One Look. They're easy to overlook, but once you pick up on them, they're awesome.

Quote by eddieinnj re. Floyd Cramer:
Floyd Cramer was a Nashville session pianist of the 1950s and beyond, and an architect of what was called the "Nashville Sound". He had a distinct piano playing style known as "slip note". in which an out-of-key note slides into the correct one. He worked on tons of sessions in Nashville, including those with Brenda Lee, the Everly Brothers, and no less a heavyweight than Elvis. The recognizable "slip note" style can be heard on his huge 1960 instrumental hit "Last Date". Cramer's technique was utilized by other pianists, including Earl "Poole" Ball, who worked here in L.A. during the heyday of the Bakersfield Sound, as well as on sessions with the Byrds and Linda herself.
That kind of slip-note style was something that I felt I heard in Billy Payne's work on "Just One Look".

I think you nailed it, Erik! One listen to Cramer's Last Date (which I have but haven't listened to in some time) and I can hear the resemblance.
It's funny to me how Just One Look has emerged as perhaps my favorite track on the live album, having not been completely sold by the studio version. I always liked it, but I never loved it. I love this.
As for the orphaned tracks from the concert, I've heard them in bootleg and recognize after the Rhino release that they certainly sound better from their source, but I think Linda was right in her choices.
On several of the left-off songs from Mad Love Live, Linda shreds her voice for the sake of rock and roll, and the result doesn't always pay off or bear repeated listenings. Mad Love itself in particular makes me wince for her poor, gorgeous larynx.
Party Girl is outstanding, but what I think put it on the chopping block was the unfortunate choice of whispering the word "vice".
In a live performance, it's an understandable, if regrettable, choice to try something new and, as an audience member, something you'd likely not recall, especially after she blows the roof off in the finale of that song.
But as a track on a real album, that whispered "vice" sounds corny and unconvincing and pokes a hole in the song, letting the air out of Linda's emotionally committed performance of it before and after.
That's my reasoning. I wonder if it was Linda's.

I just ordered from a site called 70s-TV a dvd and cd package of the entire show on both. It says they've updated the audio on the dvd and that the cd is from the broadcast that night. Not gonna be top notch SQ but for 20 bucks it's worth having both dvd and cd in it's entirety. The other concerts seem to be on YouTube but this one is limited in it's clips and it's my favorite.

It got shipped today pretty much the same day I ordered it so I should have it soon as I'm in Florida and it's coming from Georgia. Hopefully it's as good as whatever source it came from. It claims it's in great shape. They have a lot of her on there which if this works out I'll be ordering more.

Would be interested to know what video quality is like ! Just received it today and for the price and considering the rarity of the complete show the video quality is pretty good. It's not gonna be top notch as it clearly is transfered from an old video tape source but I'm glad to know it's preserved in it's entirety. I haven't tried it on a digital tv yet just a regular box tv. There's a small amount of grain to the picture but it doesn't affect the image of it being recorded in video. It's not blurry at all. A big treat is for only 4 more bucks is the cd that comes with it. The entire audio of all 21 tracks. I played it and sounds pretty good. 16.95 for both and 20.70 after shipping. About 10 bucks a piece for both the rare complete visual and rare complete audio. Great deal.

And all of the tracks fit onto one CD? Hmmm? CDs hold a lot of tracks if the songs aren't that long but if you're suggesting they're not wave format you're probably right. They're probably compressed to mp3 format but not sure. It still sounds good and having the official cd available this is a good counterpart for the missing tracks.

And all of the tracks fit onto one CD? Hmmm? Correction on my part. No audio cd is mp3, that's a data disc. Audio cds that are burned may not be as high in bit rate as store bought cds as in wave format, but when they're transferred from mp3 it's to much larger files for the audio disc. The recording is from the FM simulcast.

Agree- great review-obviously a fan. One tiny quibble-on the review of "Living in the USA" with respect to Billy Payne' s (memorable) piano part I wish the reviewer would have credited Johnny Johnson, the original, as opposed to Jerry Lee Lewis. Just for the ones of us who appreciate his huge contribution to Berry' s sound.

The last time I looked, it had already peaked on the charts it had been on. It's a testament to the long attention span of the fans, and the all-too-short attention span of the rest of the general public (IMHO).
Maybe I'll be proven wrong if there's a lot of buzz for The Sound Of My Voice at Tribeca and beyond. I hope I'm proven wrong.

ALL "hard copy" is soon going out of fashion!! there are many reasons for this....from now on...its all "up in the cloud"
pretty soon there will be no more hard drives for sale...everything will be one big holographic "Stream"
good for copyright royalties, hopefully, bad for poor and disenfranchised
I think we’ll get the video, streaming though ..... DVD / Blu-ray seems to be out of fashion
