Agree that the GC video is embarrassing. Maybe something about that dress unhinged her--the "Tumbling Dice" duet with Leo Sayer? One of the few times I've wondered "what was she thinking?" In "Sound of My Voice," the filmmakers make it seem as if "Get Closer" led to Linda getting restless and doing "Pirates of Penzance" and then "What's New?" The way that there is a slow fade of Linda doing her moves in the polka-dot dress in the "Get Closer" video reminds me of an episode of "Seinfeld." It is the episode in which Kramer and Jerry, etc., all start saying "Hellllooooooo, Jerry!" or "Helllloooooooo, Elaaiiiiine!" (this is distinct from the more subdued running gag of "Hello, Newman"). Anyway, toward the end of the episode, Jerry says it to Kramer and Kramer is over it and says, "That is so played." And every time I have seen "Sound of My Voice" when they are doing that slow fade to the "Get Closer" video, I hear Kramer in my head saying, "That is so played." It was time. Linda's heart and passion seemed to have moved on.

The thing about Get Closer is her singing had just moved up yet another notch. It was such a painfully long wait between Mad Love and GC. She’d done Pirates in Central Park and on Broadway, done the movie, recorded the standards album that she never released. So I remember passing by the record store and flipping out to see Get Closer ads plastered all over it. It was a very striking album cover so it did it’s job, as if to say “she’s back!” Ronstadt album covers always looked so good record store managers would naturally make them prominent. Kosh DEFINITELY helped sell those records. The video for GC was choreographed by Toni Basil and I think it works. It showed up a lot on MTV and other music video shows. She’s so adorable in that one and in the vids for “Lies,” “I Knew You When” and “Tell Him” from the same album. I remember skipping over “Sometimes You Just Can’t Win” in those days. And I don’t know why because now it’s one of my faves. Funny how time can change things like that.

Quote by rick re. "Get Closer":
Given all of that, though, it can sometimes color the impressions we might have had of Linda during that transitional phase of her career. I had always liked "Get Closer" from the outset, even though it wasn't a monstrous hit and even though many here on the dais don't like it, while being somewhat ambivalent about a lot of what Linda would do for the rest of the 1980s. At the time, I really didn't "get" what Linda was doing; and I found other musical interests in the interim. Later on, I got around to feeling that, besides her own artistic inclinations, she really didn't need the MTV audience; and besides, they'd get Madonna soon enough. In any case, even at the apex of her career, Linda was never strictly about sexuality, which I don't think you could say about "Madge".

Just noticed in the photo on the street of Linda and Kosh, there's writing on the back of Linda's satin baseball jacket--anyone know what it says? (You can't tell from this angle but maybe there's another photo?)

That jacket was on ebay and I should have kept bidding. I missed out on it but I gave up early and it went for not a lot considering it was THE jacket from the LITUSA album. I forget what it says on back. eddiejinnj

personally, my favourite cover art (after Hasten Down the Wind) is the inner cover of Living In The USA, I love that spread, I have it framed on my wall (as well as Hasten... naturally... :-) )

Linda Fan 5 Read an interview in which Linda said she could never sing TMA in public because it was too personal and she would be embarrassed for people to see how much she had been hurt.

about singing songs that are too personal in public it just occurred to me that if Jackson Browne worked that way he would never have performed live at all... or his set list would have been very diminished :-) not a criticism of anyone, just a thought For A Dancer is enough to rip me to shreds for example, I can only try and imagine the strength it took to perform it

Well, Liza with a Z, I saw Linda sing "Try Me Again" live at the Universal Amphitheatre back when she was singing songs from the "Hasten Down the Wind" album. Maybe you and Linda Fan 5 might consider joining the Forum and registering instead of posting as Guests.

I suppose the Get Closer album cover was interesting enough, however the concept was hardly cutting edge. Music and fashion were clearly changing, Linda looked noticeably older which she was (clearly going into MILF territory as opposed to the current rock chick) and the dress seemed dated. After her tenure on Broadway in which her singing was never better with that "Get Closer" tiger growl juxtaposing her incredibly piercing high soprano of "I Knew You When", the song "Get Closer" wasn't exactly the smartest choice for a single. The public is accustomed to the 4/4 backbeat of rock and roll and the 7/4 time signature of "Get Closer" (although catchy and different) wasn't enough to evoke interest across the board. It's as if Linda's idea of rock became somewhat refined and sophisticated which it generally isn't and she was undoubtedly chasing the Adult Contemporary sound. I always felt the guitars could have and should have been louder while the female backup blend sounded too much like the Pointer Sisters' "Fire" (also in 7/4 time) which Linda indicated on a radio show at the time was the intent. Like many posters here, the video is hard to watch. At first I thought she was imitating Mick Jagger in the very popular MTV video "Start It Up" but as it turns out, she looked terribly awkward and uncomfortable doing those silly (almost elementary school talent show) moves. Video killed the radio star as it goes and Linda clearly wasn't in her element although it was a valiant effort on her part. Her videos for the standards were more in line with who she is.

so now that we...HOPEFULLY have EVOLVED a bit by the Covid Capture....WHAT pray tell would a illumined Linda do today???
...well...prob what she DID DO....back out gracefully from the "trough"hahaha!!!!
I'm now seeing artists over in Copenhagen....performing for folks, a handfull...behind glass for 5 minutes at a pop........WHAT in the world is going to happen
ZOOM ain't analog...the VIBES are broken
Video killed the Radio stars....Virus' kill the Vibes
I'm thinking the future is private party zoom and live chat room combos........wish the CSU concert was live Zoomed with Linda's interview...why didn't they do that I wonder???

I think once "concept" vids became the thing then it became unauthentic for Linda. imo. I think the vids with her and just a band like "Hurt So Bad"; she looked great and sounded just as good or better than the record. She also did great on the standards vids and some later ones like "Somewhere Out There" and "When Something is Wrong with My Baby". I think the two concept vids for "Get Closer" the title song and "Tell Him", she did not look comfortable or natural as valiant as the effort was. eddiejinnj

One reason I like LPs, especially Linda's, are the gatefold photos. LITUSA is a classic, for example, so is SD. I like the one with her band members & pin-up notes as well.

Also, PID and HDTW are great gatefolds. LP's, imo, made you feel like you really owned something creative along with the music and, of course, is an artform in itself. I think I may have brought this up before but I wonder if Linda's albums hold the record for best album package wins (3) at the Grammys? eddiejinfl

Living In The U.S.A. was the album by which I "discovered" Linda, so I kind of have a bias for that album's cover.

It took the LP sleeve for me to see that the PID cover has Linda (herself)-in-a-prison cell, as no face is showing, no big brown eyes looking out at me. Its the most curious of all her covers to me, a looking-in, rather than looking-at picture.

Just happened to see this on YouTube. -- Thirty-six weeks on the Billboard album chart, not three. Might be confusing peak position #3 with weeks on chart. It wasn’t a nightgown. "At least the music was part of it." Another brilliant YouTube commentator.

I've never liked the Get Closer cover ..... lovely album but the entire cover looks fake. The concept is great but execution not. I think that was the look they were going for. Doubt it was by accident. That being said, I like the artwork for the album.

I am pretty sure it is a fact that they were going for the effects of the graphics of the album (dress being superimposed over another photo). I just wish we had another photo of Linda on the inner sleeve of album. eddiejinnj

I thought I heard 3 also. Yeah, he must have confused it's peak Billboard position with weeks on chart. Also, I think Muse would concur, that is not a nightgown she is wearing but is a strapless sun dress. Looks like ma muslin-type fabric. eddiejinnj
PS: I wrote this earlier today on another screen and forgot to submit it.
