Another loss for the music community. Tony Joe White, the swamp-rock giant who had a hit of his own with "Polk Salad Annie" in 1969, and whose composition "Rainy Night In Georgia" became an instant standard when Brook Benton took it to #1 R&B/#4 pop in March 1970, has passed away at the age of 75: people.com/music/tony-joe-white-dead-75/

It was ironic Tony Joe as an artist proved to be a one hit wonder, even though his songs were recorded by other artists, who had hits with them. Tony had the potential for so much more and I felt he was perhaps eclipsed because of being on a smaller label initially, and then moved to a bigger label which did nothing with him. Tony himself might never have gotten a hit with his own version of "Rainy Night in Georgia," but as the writer of the song, he likely made as much money or more from Brook Benton's hit version. And that was okay too, because it was Brook's last Top 40 hit.
