I saw the news last night about Marty's passing. It caught me by surprise, to say the least but it's another sad reminder that the idols for those of us who are baby boomers are at the age where death is an event that can happen at any time. And that also includes those of us who are older baby boomers. It just seems like many of the various books of life are coming to an end of their chapters and closed forever.

Certainly they are coming more frequently nowadays. It is amazing that some have really managed to cheat death for so long, but even they can't keep that up forever.
And it's notable that Balin was beaten somewhat severely at Altamont because he dared cross swords with the "security" (read: Hells Angels) for assaulting members of the audience who got too close to the stage and their precious motorcycles.

This was surprising to me too, as I had last heard that Marty was still performing. I had even checked out his website for show dates once. Yes, it is sad that we are losing too many of our musical heroes and icons. Marty had a very distinctive and unique voice. I first heard his voice on the radio with his solo hit song "Hearts" in 1981. It went all the way to #8 I believe. His follow-up to that made the Top 40 as well, "Atlanta Lady"...great song! Of course, he sang lead vocals on a number of Jefferson Starship's hits in the '70s, with "Miracles" in 1975, and "Count On Me" and "Runaway," both in 1978. He was an amazing singer-songwriter and a very important contributor to music in the late 1960s and 1970s. He was one of the best and he will be missed. RIP Marty.
