The title “Walls” stems from how outraged Streisand was/is about Trump starting with his campaign announcement speech in he labeled Mexicans as “rapists” and talked about building “a wall” between the United States and Mexico. She, along with many others — celebrities and non-celebrities alike — have been incensed by “45.” She had earlier considered calling her new album “What’s on My Mind.”

Streisand’s “Walls” to be released Nov. 2.
Press Release -- " Walls is the stunning new album from Barbra Streisand. This collection is Streisand's first album primarily consisting of original songs since 2005. Walls finds Barbra exploring both her concerns and hopes for the future in a collection filled with beautiful melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. In addition to the three original tunes which the Oscar-winning songwriter contributed to, the songs on Walls explore topics near to the celebrated artist's heart. Streisand also brings a fresh perspective to the classic songs "Imagine" and "What A Wonderful World," and the Bacharach/David pop standard "What The World Needs Now." The penultimate song that Streisand sings is a timely one called "Take Care Of This House" by the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner. Barbra she shares production and arrangement duties on Walls with Walter Afanasieff, John Shanks and David Foster all Grammy recipients for Producer of the Year and Songwriter Hall of Fame recipient Desmond Child. Streisand's vision also comes through on the defining title track "Walls," with lyrics specifically written for the album by revered Streisand collaborators Alan & Marilyn Bergman. The first song to be released from Walls was the passionate plea, "Don't Lie To Me," where Streisand shares the guiding principles and values she has believed in, spoken about, and fought for her entire life. "
"Walls" Track Listing --
1. What's On My Mind 2. Don't Lie to Me 3. Imagine / What a Wonderful World 4. Walls 5. Lady Liberty 6. What the World Needs Now 7. Better Angels 8. Love's Never Wrong 9. The Rain Will Fall 10. Take Care of This House (From the Leonard Bernstein-Alan Jay Lerner musical "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue") 11. Happy Days Are Here Again
Here is the first single —
"Don't Lie to Me" (Lyrics)
Why can’t you just tell me the truth? Hard to believe the things you say. Why can’t you feel the tears I cry today? Cry today... cry today
How do you win if we all lose? You change the facts to justify. Your lips move but your words get in the way. In the way... in the way
Kings and Queens, Crooks and Thieves
You don’t see the forest for the trees
Head and Heart, On our Knees
You can’t see what We all see
How do you sleep when the world keeps turning? All that we built has come undone. How do you sleep when the world is burning? Everyone answers to someone.
Don’t lie to me, don’t lie to me, you lie to me
Don’t lie to me, don’t lie to me, you lie to me
You can build towers of bronze and gold
You can paint castles in the sky
You can use smoke and mirrors, old clichés
Not today, not today
Kings and Queens, Crooks and Thieves
You don’t see the forest for the trees
Hand on Heart, Down on Knees
You can’t see what everyone sees
How do you sleep when the world keeps turning? All that we built has come undone. How do you sleep when the world is burning? Everyone answers to someone.
Don’t lie to me, don’t lie to me, you lie to me
Don’t lie to me, don’t lie to me, you lie to me
Can’t you see I’m crying? Can’t you see we’re crying? Where’s the new horizon? Where’s the new horizon?
How do you sleep? How do you sleep? How do you sleep? (How do you sleep when the world keeps turning?) How do you sleep? (All that we built has come undone) Enough is ENOUGH (How do you sleep when the world is burning?) How DO YOU SLEEP? (Everyone answers to someone)
Don’t lie to me, don’t lie to me, you lie to me
Don’t lie to me, don’t lie to me, you lie to me
Can’t you see I’m crying? Can’t you see we’re dying? Can’t you see we’re crying?
Everyone answers to someone!

Given the corporate nature of radio, and the fact that Babs, at least to my knowledge, has never been this political in her career, I don't hold out a whole lot of hope for this being a big hit.
On the other hand, you just never know....
As Rachel Maddow says: "Watch this space."

Do they even play Barbra Streisand on the radio? I thought she just depended on her existing fan base.

Do they even play Barbra Streisand on the radio? I thought she just depended on her existing fan base. Tony, I don't listen to much over-the-air radio anymore, and, if I do, it is National Public Radio. However, Streisand's 2014 release "Parters" was the 10th Number One album of her career, making her the first act to have Number One albums in each of the last six decades. Her 2016 album "Encore" was her 11th album to go to Number One. Erik, as far as her being political, she has always been political. The first president for whom she sang was President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. She sang for Johnson. She did benefits for Sen. Eugene McCarthy in 1968 and for Sen. George McGovern in 1972 (which became her album "Live in Concert at The Forum"). In 1986, she did her "One Voice" concert to raise for Democratic candidates. She sang at fund-raisers for Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama and Clinton. During her 2006 concert tour, some Republican was heckling her while she was singing and she finally told him to "Shut the F*** Up!" She's never been shy about her politics. And it seems whenever The Right wants to demonize "The Left Coast" or liberal celebrities then Streisand is the first or among the first mentioned.

Yes, I know she still sells a lot of albums-- maybe even #1 for all time. But I listen to a lot of different stations, and I hear Streisand even less than Ronstadt. I do see more marketing for Streisand than Ronstadt, but not radio. But I don't listen to adult contemporary radio, if that even still exists. Seems like the stations that would have played Streisand in the past now play more current singers.

Point well taken, Rick. I forgot the history of her activism. What I meant to say, I suppose, was that I can't recall, even during the era of Nixon or, later on, Son of Bush, her being quite this vituperative against a sitting president. But then, given that we are dealing with an unprecedented situation in the form of an unhinged, psychopathic narcissist named Donald John Trump, there is apparently still a first time for everything in Babs' life to do something, and I guess this is the time.

Hi, Erik -- Streisand was on President Nixon's "Enemies List," an achievement of which she is proud. She was a very vocal critic of Nixon, Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43, and, yes, most of all, Donald Trump. She received her Kennedy Center Honor while Bush 43 was president and, in the interest of bipartisanship, she showed up and was gracious to him and he to her. During her 2006 concert tour, when Shrub was President, Streisand had a George W. Bush-impersonator join her for a bit of comic banter and a "duet" in which Streisand named many of the Bush 43 policies with which she disagreed. In the same vein, during her 2006 tour, I saw her here in Los Angeles, and it was right after the Democrats took back the House of Representatives and Nancy Pelosi was in the audience and Barbra was joyous that Pelosi would be Speaker of the House. She is quite partisan. However, toward the end of former First Lady Barbara Bush's life, Streisand gave a concert in Houston and she invited George H.W. and Barbara Bush backstage at her concert there. Photos were taken and Streisand -- who had been a strong critic of Bush 41 in the day -- found things to praise him for in light of Trump. I could go on. But, no, I can't think of her ever putting being so pointed in a song against a sitting president. However, she certainly has been outspoken against many Presidents with whom she disagreed.

And I would wager that Trump is, by several degrees of extremity, the one that has raised her hackles the most, and rightly so. It's one thing to have been on Nixon's "Enemies List" (which included Paul Newman, who considered that the greatest honor that he ever got), but quite another to deal with an out-in-the open misogynist, bastard, racist, homophobe, xenophobe, and serial rapist...and, dare I say this, a sh**hole president.

I've not seen much backlash so far but I guess there is a lot on peoples minds at the moment. Song is OK, if it spreads a message then good. Its a very different sound for Barbra which is a welcome change,

Hi, Fab — My physical CD from Amazon hasn’t been delivered yet. With the album being more politically minded I was glad to see that she chose a beautiful song by Leonard Bernstein and Alan Jay Lerner called “Take Care of This House” from their short-lived Broadway musical “1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.” I first heard the song performed on TV in 1977 at President Carter’s Inaugural Gala (which also featured Linda Ronstadt!). In the show, John and Abigail Adams, as they are moving out of The White House, ask the staff to take care of this house because it belongs to all of us, “keep it from harm.” I’ve always found the song very moving and, now, with its current occupant, I fear for who is taking care of that house —
Separately, Streisand appeared on “Carpool Karaoke” with James Corden last night —

Her performance on Carpool Karaoke is very funny, I love the face she pulls and her response when asked if she’s a good driver!
The album is one of her best in many years .... her voice strong, arrangements mostly very good (quite modern and different to much of what she’s done) and the choice of material generally inspiring.
I have a few niggles but largely it’s great - would love this to hit no 1 again. This would be her third consecutive album this decade to debut at no 1 - quite a feat for anyone, never mind a 76 year old!

In the interest of keeping this thread less "political," I am posting Streisand's appearance on "Real Time With Bill Maher" on Friday evening in the U.S.

I have Real Time set up to record each week but I did not get the Streisand episode. So I went searching and discovered that HBO/Cinemax has removed all their channels from Dishnetwork while they renegotiate their contract and make my monthly bill go up even more with their contract extortion techniques.
So I decide that the best attitude would be F**K HBO. I am tired of paying through the nose to watch two series each month while waiting years for the next season of Game of Thrones. So I called up and cancelled all my premium channels. More people should do the same. That's almost $60 more a month to pay for cat food!
I'll just do like everybody else and steal HBO or wait for it to show up on Netflix or Hulu.

I posted the Streisand segment under the War Room section. Anton— HBO is not the first network to have issues with a carrier, be it DISH or Time Warner or Cox, etc. CBS has gone dark on numerous carriers over the years. It’s part of business. Obviously your right to decide how you proceed to go forward, but this is actually a pretty common occurrence, and is not specific to HBO.

Good for Anton. You mean you have to pay $$$ to watch those Bill Maher segments? Not having a tv I suppose I don't know what I am missing but how can they end up on youtube like they do? Not complaining but I remember when they said the nice thing about "pay tv" (when it was first released in the late 60s) was there would be absolutely NO commercials. I am kind of thinking that is a lie. My first and last encounter with pay tv was when I paid for Pirates of Penzance starring Linda and I also saw it in the theatre. I even bought a vcr to tape record it. Then cancelled afterwards. Just high speed internet is costing $80+ a month. Anything less won't even operate my Ooma. There is no real competition. Anyway, I enjoyed the Streisand clip on youtube (even more now lol).

Yeah I know... it happens all the time, usually with the local networks. I busted their greedy asses by adding an antenna so I get their channels free and they don't get an extra cent from me. They are advertiser supported channels and should be grateful that their signal gets retransmitted so their paying sponsors have more viewers but no they want to stick it to the viewers and charge us an extra $12 per month to receive over-the-air programming via dish.
I have since the 1980s subscribed to "the everything package" and my bill was approaching $200 per month-- and I'm not that big a TV watcher.
HBO was just the last straw. I was paying $15 to $20 a month just to watch Bill Maher. Truth be known, if it were just me in the house, satellite TV would be cancelled completely.
Sorry to hi-jack the Streisand thread with my lunatic raving.
I got the new album, and I was impressed with her voice and songs. But I only listened to half of it so far. I am not a big fan of her singing style and it just became a bit too much so I changed to Dusty Springfield. I will attack Walls later.

Rob... I usually enjoy Maher's entire hour. The entire show is good, not just the highlight clips. But I sat down to watch Streisand this week and the last episode I had was Stormy Daniels. Then I realized I had lost HBO. Then I realized I could do without it.
The Streisand episode was good because he usually has guests from across the political spectrum, but that night he only had people with good sense. No Scary Moochy. No Roger Stone.
