The market is flooded with contestants from these talent reality shows nowadays. Very few achieve the level of commercial success and legitimacy of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, etc. Some record a few albums and have a small following, but fade into oblivion after a while. As you point out, the music business is tough and talent is often not enough to have a lucrative career that can be sustained. Linda's path was the polar opposite--she didn't set out to be famous or a big star but fate took its course.

FYI Brennley Brown sang Joni Mitchell's "River," also covered by Linda on her "Merry Christmas," Album. I can't find the youtube.. but she did do a nice job, in fact, I liked it better than last weeks LLT.

From what I heard, that is Linda's phrasing and version. How was this song suggested? eddiejinnj

Coach Gwen Stefani encouraged Brown to divert from her country roots and take on the song, believing that its emotional side ties into the country genre. In rehearsal, the two decide to add a three-part harmony in the background to make the performance a little more in her country comfort zone.

Given that Brannley seems to be much more aware of Linda than most folks who are in their mid-teens like she is, if she manages to get a recording contract (which seems more and more likely, in my opinion), I would hope that she takes that more left-of-center approach to the country genre that Linda did, as opposed to the corporate country that Nashville is about (specifically, insofar as the female gender goes, Kelsea Ballerini). As Linda pointed out, country music as practiced in Nashville and country music practiced out here in California are not necessarily the same thing.

I am sure most will like Brennley's voice and style as it is the trend forced on us today by the likes of Mariah's influence but I find it a bit exhausting. She doesn't tip the "oversouling" scale like so many do but something about it is still a bit much for me. I much prefer a crystal clear, crisp, sharp sounding voice like Ronstadt's or Streisand's or Arden's or Carpenter's or even the more vanilla Huang (to name a few). I guess that makes me old fashioned. I like to be at least able to somewhat sing along without choking myself or coughing while I follow the vocals. Fortunately my cats are the only earthly beings exposed to my parroting. They become concerned when I oversoul and race out of the room. That being said she is obviously very talented and I wish her the best.

I think it all depends on how Brennley chooses to develop her skills. If she is this much into Linda, she will probably get the concept of how less can oftentimes be more. Linda certainly knew when the moment arose for a dramatic flourish, and when it came time to show restraint. It helped that Linda had such a wide-ranging voice, of course. But if Brennley is true to her word, she'll figure it out.
