I know Erik will appreciate this one.. From Tift's excellent set last night at the World Cafe live in Philly... The impeccable keyboards are supplied by Eric Heywood (The Pretenders, Jayhawks, Son Volt, etc)...

Is it any wonder that Robert and I, with more than a little (and extremely welcome) help from cescpa56, have been jawing about Tift ever since 2002?
And this would include this video, plus her recent praise for Linda, and all of her own albums, which see her putting money where her mouth is, mixing in her own contemporary Americana songwriting approach with the old-school country-rock influences of Linda and Emmylou.
How Tift isn't more successful than she is, in comparison to, say, Taylor Swift or Kelsea Ballerini, is more than a little depressing. But if Tift did the things that I fear she'd have to do to have a big career, I don't think she'd be nearly as interesting or as good as she is in artistic terms. If she is able to eventually have big success by being authentically herself, then that's all good (IMHO).

I know what that is like Erik. Although she might be more comfortable with the degree of success that she has. Taking that plunge into superstardom can wreck a life and a career if one is not ready, willing and able. Valerie Carter was a good example as she knew she was "delicate" and knew her limits. Wendy Waldman once had a similar concern and couldn't figure out how some equally talented artists click with the public while others don't. Some have moderate success while others go to the stratosphere. One such artist for me is this one: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUMq4sB5dsC9kQAHv2ad60q4lPrDN44U8 She is big in Canada but had only moderate success here. I just don't get it either as I know like Tift Jann has worked really hard for her success. Luck of the draw? Whatever the reason, I adore her.

True, about what "superstardom" can do to some people. I would say that with Linda, however, while she clearly didn't exactly hunger for stardom and attention (it found her), she did use that stardom and attention very wisely to help fellow female artists, including, of course, Valerie Carter. And Tift was certainly inspired by Linda to do what she's doing for the pure love and enjoyment. If ever the two of them met, it seems to me that they could both enjoy a good discussion about music.
