And he definitely had the goods. It's quite a feat to go from MARTY to the four-year stint in a military TV sitcom like McHale's Navy, and then back to hard-edged films like THE DIRTY DOZEN and THE WILD BUNCH.
And the same year he was in MARTY, he was also one of three heavies Spencer Tracy had to face down (the other two being Lee Marvin and Robert Ryan) in the classic modern 1955 western BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK.
I dare anybody of the current generation of "stars" to show that kind of versatility in their careers.

The last time I saw him, was on Saturday Night Live...just last year I think. He was in the "what's up with dat?" sketch and looked great. RIP

To lose two great legends just days apart, you have to wonder who's the next legend that will leave us? Hollywood has a superstition about celebrities passing in threes, and while there are still a few celebrities who are as old as what Andy Griffith and Ernest Borgnine were, the next legend to pass could be much younger. But, what a sad year it's been for all of the greats we have lost this year.

Really, this has been a cataclysmic year for the world of arts and entertainment, in terms of the number of people we've lost.

Here is Borgnine, alongside William Holden, Warren Oates, and Ben Johnson, on the long walk towards death at the extremely violent climax of THE WILD BUNCH:

I don't know why, but my memory of him will always be as Stella Stevens' husband, Mike Rogg, in The Poseidon Adventure.
He lost Stella as the survivors were making their way to the top of the ship and accused Gene Hackman of killing her. "You took from me the only thing I ever loved in the whole world, my Linda."
But, the part I remember the most is when Shelley Winters died and he told her lifeless body, "Ya had a lotta guts, lady ... a lotta guts!"
"The Poseidon Adventure" is one of my Top 10 movies of all time.
