Few people seem to realize that Some of Shelly's Blues (written by Nesmith) was originally released by Linda and the Stone Poneys as a single. The Monkees version wasn't released until the 1990's and Nesmith's version until the 1970s. The Dirt Band had a mild hit with it as well. He originally wrote it for the Monkees but somehow Linda got it probably because of her success with Different Drum. It was sad for me at the time that Up To My Neck In High Muddy Water never really took off as a single. It is one of my favorite early Linda songs.
Some nice history on the Poneys' album that had these songs and what led Linda to Nesmith.

I'm probably going to get killed for saying this, but my guess as to why "Up To My Neck" didn't take off (it only stayed on the Hot 100 for two weeks, both weeks at #93) is that it was far too country for AM pop radio at the time.

It was groundbreaking in my mind. Some of Shelly's Blues was similar however it did become a regional hit by the Dirt Band later on as countrified as it was on pop stations. Ode to Billy Joe and others were getting lots of airplay around then too and Linda was in the forefront.
