...Just to name a few...
Do Any of these Symptoms Sound Familiar?
If So, This Series Can Change Your & Your Loved One's Life.
Autoimmunity has such a high price for the families suffering. It's twice the estimated cost of cancer in the US. Between the costs of these ridiculously-expensive medications, and the care required, the National Institute of Health estimates costs to be over 100 billion dollars annually for Autoimmune Disease.
But what about these poor individual families that were already struggling to get by? It costs tens, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars – in medical bills and lost time and lost energy. In lost dreams.
In story after story we hear what this has cost patients. Millions of dollars. We have one patient that invested over 20,000 dollars a year for FOUR years … that’s a whopping 80,000 dollars!
Is that something you could afford?
The worst part of the story is that this woman got NO results.
This amazing woman pictured was stuck in her home, in too much pain, and often ashamed to leave. Her home became like a prison to her, her body became like a prison that she was locked inside of. In the end, it was a book that saved her life.
It cost her 30 dollars.
The world’s leading minds say that autoimmunity is the core cause for ALL disease, for cardiovascular disease, for CANCER. Even for depression and suicide.
I do not want others to go through this hell... And I know you don't want your friends or family to suffer either... Autoimmune disease robs our youth, steals our years and ruins lives... How many people do you know have had their life experiences stolen from them? Their marriage, their wife, their husband, their children??? How long are we going to wait until we stand up against this terrible dynamic?
Autoimmune Disease CAN be reversed and put into remission… The research papers have said again and again that you can reverse the development of autoimmune disease by lifestyle choices.
There are scores of stories of breakthroughs. And I want yours to be one of those. Your loved one that you’re thinking of right now, could be one of these amazing success stories.

Scientists from Harvard University's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have found evidence that a chemical derived from cannabis may be capable of extending the life expectancy for those with pancreatic cancer. (Photo: Pablo PORCIUNCULA BRUNE / AFP)
Headlines about the illness, as a result, tend to be discouraging. But this month scientists from Harvard University’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have released some much-needed good news. In their study, published in the journal Frontiers of Oncology on July 23, the researchers revealed that a chemical found in cannabis has demonstrated “significant therapy potential” in treatment of pancreatic cancer.
The specific drug, called FBL-03G, www.flavocure.com/ is a derivative of a cannabis “flavonoid” — the name for a naturally-occurring compound found in plants, vegetables and fruits which, among other purposes, provides their vibrant color. Flavonoids from cannabis were discovered by a London researcher named Marilyn Barrett in 1986, and were later found to have anti-inflammatory benefits.
But while scientists long suspected that cannabis flavonoids may have therapeutic potential, the fact that they make up just 0.14 percent of the plant meant that researchers would need entire fields of it to be grown in order to extract large enough quantities. That changed recently when scientists found a way to genetically engineer cannabis flavonoids — making it possible to investigate their benefits. www.sciencealert.com/scientists-unlock-the-secrets-of-two-cannabis-molecules-30x-more-effective-than-aspirin
Enter the researchers at Dana-Farber, who decided to take the therapeutic potential of one of these flavonoids, FBL-03G, and test it on one of the deadliest cancers through a lab experiment. The results, according to Wilfred Ngwa, PhD, an assistant professor at Harvard and one of the study’s researcher, were “major.”
“The most significant conclusion is that tumor-targeted delivery of flavonoids, derived from cannabis, enabled both local and metastatic tumor cell kill, significantly increasing survival from pancreatic cancer,” Ngwa tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “This has major significance, given that pancreatic cancer is particularly refractory to current therapies.”
Ngwa says that the study is the first to demonstrate the potential new treatment for pancreatic cancer. But on top of successfully killing those cells, the scientist found FBL-03G capable of attacking other cancer cells — which was startling even to them. “We were quite surprised that the drug could inhibit the growth of cancer cells in other parts of the body, representing metastasis, that were not targeted by the treatment,” says Ngwa. “This suggests that the immune system is involved as well, and we are currently investigating this mechanism.”
The significance of that, says Ngwa, is that, because pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed in later stages, once it has spread, and the flavonoids seem to be capable of killing other cancer cells, it may mean the life expectancy of those with the condition could increase.
“If successfully translated clinically, this will have major impact in treatment of pancreatic cancer,” says Ngwa.
The next step for the Harvard researchers is to complete ongoing pre-clinical studies, which Ngwa hopes will be completed by the end of 2020. That could set the stage for testing the new treatment in humans, opening up a new window of hope for a group long in need of it.
Although we don't know a lot about the causes of Alzheimer’s disease, having the following conditions may raise your risk or make your symptoms worse.
Anemia This common blood disorder is defined by a decline in red blood cells. These cells transport oxygen, which is why a common symptom is persistent fatigue. Other symptoms include weakness, shortness of breath, and cold hands and feet. The condition hits more than 3 million Americans. Some studies have found a connection between anemia and an increased risk of dementia in older adults. One of the most common causes of anemia is an iron deficiency, which can result from a poor diet; it may also be a side effect of certain medications. The concern is that by depriving the brain of oxygen, anemia could lead to the type of damage seen in people with Alzheimer's. The results of one 11-year study involving more than 2,500 people ages 70-79 revealed that those with anemia had a 40 percent higher risk of developing dementia than people who didn't have anemia. Check out the 9 most powerful eating habits to reduce your risk of Alzheimer's. www.rd.com/health/conditions/eating-habits-prevent-alzheimers/
Depression and anxiety 'There's quite a lot of evidence that for people who are destined to develop Alzheimer's dementia, sometimes the first thing you see is depression or anxiety,' says Pierre Tariot, MD, director of the Banner Alzheimer's Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. However, scientists say these mood disorders may not be just a symptom of Alzheimer's—they may actually be risk factors for developing the disease. Because depression and anxiety can elevate levels of the stress hormone cortisol, one theory is that chronically high levels of cortisol can damage the brain.
Diabetes The link between diabetes and Alzheimer's is fairly strong. 'Diabetes is probably a risk factor for multiple reasons,' says Dr. Tariot. 'Top of the list is that the disease leads to abnormal inflammatory responses in multiple organs—including the brain. Another reason is that the insulin-signaling pathway is also one of the pathways involved in the breakdown of amyloid. Finally, diabetes contributes to cerebrovascular disease [conditions that raise the risk of stroke], which is a significant factor for Alzheimer's.
'Nearly 21 million Americans have diabetes, and an estimated 54 million more have prediabetes, according to the Alzheimer's Association. But the disease can be controlled with diet and lifestyle changes, and medication when necessary, to lower the risk. Read about more than 70 easy ways to prevent diabetes. www.rd.com/health/conditions/20-breakthroughs-to-reverse-diabetes/
Down syndrome 'The genetics are similar in Down syndrome and Alzheimer's,' explains Elise Caccappolo, PhD, associate professor of neuropsychology at Columbia University Medical Center. 'If people with Down syndrome grow old enough, they will develop Alzheimer's.' The genetic mutation that triggers the syndrome also causes amyloid plaques—a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease—to build up in the brain over time. Learn about the stages of Alzheimer's. www.rd.com/health/wellness/the-stages-of-alzheimers-disease/
Gum disease Gingivitis and periodontitis—gum disease—indicate the buildup of harmful bacteria in your mouth, and they're mobile: 'These bacteria can travel to the heart and brain and can cause inflammation,' explains Rudolph Tanzi, PhD, a neurology professor at Harvard University and director of Massachusetts General Hospital's Genetics and Aging Research Unit. Gum disease is extremely common; nearly half of all American adults have some form of it. Fortunately, it's also easy to prevent (and treat). 'Be religious about flossing your teeth,' says Tanzi. And get regular teeth cleanings and checkups every six months. Read up on 6 research breakthroughs regarding Alzheimer's. www.rd.com/health/conditions/alzheimers-research-breakthroughs/
Hearing loss Hearing loss doesn't appear to cause the physical brain changes that are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease, but it may be responsible for—and accelerate—dementia, which could make Alzheimer's symptoms even more severe. 'Any significant sensory impairment is almost certainly going to magnify or exaggerate the consequences of any cognitive impairment,' Dr. Tariot explains.
One concern is that if someone's hearing has been bad or failing for years, it could harm that person's brain, he says. An 18-year study led by researchers at Johns Hopkins University and the National Institute on Aging found that the worse someone's hearing loss was, the more likely they were to develop dementia. Make sure you know the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia. www.rd.com/health/conditions/difference-dementia-vs-alzheimers/
Herpes and other infections Scientists are researching the connection between certain types of chronic infections, such as herpes, and Alzheimer's disease. These researchers believe the infections may accelerate the damage of Alzheimer's by triggering chronic inflammation. While experts once thought the amyloid plaques found in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease were junk, they now theorize that the plaque may be the body's protective response to infection. The more plaques the body produces—by repeated herpes outbreaks, for example—the greater a person's risk of developing Alzheimer's later in life.
'At age 50, 90 percent of the population carries HHVI, the herpes cold-sore virus,' says Tanzi. 'If you get a cold sore now and then, don't panic. But if you're one of those people who get a cold sore every month or even more frequently, you might want to seek medical attention for antiviral drugs or other therapy.' Eventually, scientists hope to develop vaccines and drugs to fight these viruses and infections more effectively. Think about taking up these 15 activities that can slow down Alzheimer's. www.rd.com/health/conditions/things-that-slow-down-alzheimers-disease/
High blood pressure 'Anything related to blood flow, including high blood pressure—in fact, anything you would see a cardiologist about—can be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease,' says Caccappolo. That's because cardiovascular disease can compromise the brain's blood supply. High blood pressure—which as many as one in three American adults have—may damage the small blood vessels that supply brain cells with oxygen. New research also indicates that older people whose blood pressure runs higher on average than their peers' are more likely to develop tangles and plaques in their brains, both of which are markers of Alzheimer's disease.
Be sure to get your blood pressure checked regularly: Your doctor can recommend lifestyle changes and medications that are excellent in helping to reduce your numbers. Check out 15 things neurologists do to prevent Alzheimer's disease. www.rd.com/health/conditions/neurologists-do-prevent-alzheimers-disease/
Hypothyroidism Having an underactive thyroid gland—older women have the highest risk—may not cause Alzheimer's disease, but it can lead to memory problems that may accelerate the symptoms of dementia. Common symptoms of thyroid trouble are fatigue, weight gain, constipation, and sensitivity to cold. Treatment works, so don't hesitate to see your doctor about any worrisome symptoms.
Obesity Nearly two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese, and the excess weight is a risk factor for diabetes, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular problems—all of which increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive problems.
'If you're overweight, not physically active, and you have the gene that predisposes you to Alzheimer's, you're going to have a higher probability of developing it,' says Stephen Rao, PhD, a neuropsychologist at Cleveland Clinic's Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Increasing physical activity and losing even a relatively small amount of weight can help reduce your risk factors. Avoid these 16 everyday habits that seriously raise your risk of dementia. www.rd.com/health/conditions/everyday-habits-up-your-dementia-risk/
Preeclampsia Preeclampsia is a form of dangerously high blood pressure that occurs in about 5 percent of pregnancies, usually late term. Even though women who develop preeclampsia generally experience it for only a short period in their life, some studies suggest that it can raise the risk of vascular dementia decades later. As with other types of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, preeclampsia compromises the blood and oxygen supply to the brain.
Sleep apnea The exact incidence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the United States is unknown because it is so often undiagnosed, but estimates are that at least 25 million Americans have OSA. Men are also more likely than women to have sleep apnea—which is much worse than thunderous snoring. Sufferers can stop breathing numerous times throughout the night, disrupting oxygen flow to the brain and other organs.
One study found that older people with sleep apnea had much higher levels of amyloid beta, the protein involved in brain-plaque buildup. Another study found that people with irregular breathing during sleep showed signs of developing Alzheimer's at an earlier age. Researchers believe that treating sleep problems could help prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Find out the 16 things sleep doctors wish you knew about snoring and sleep apnea. www.rd.com/health/conditions/sleep-doctors-snoring/
Vitamin deficiencies 'A vitamin B12 deficiency can absolutely cause someone to look cognitively impaired,' says Dr. Tariot. 'B12 deficiency is uncommon, but we do see it in people who chronically use [drugs that help reduce stomach acid].' A vitamin D deficiency may also raise the risk of developing Alzheimer's or dementia later in life. Talk to your doctor about your diet, your prescriptions, and your risk of deficiency; blood tests can spot trouble. Now check out these 50 everyday habits that reduce your risk of Alzheimer's. www.rd.com/health/wellness/how-to-prevent-alzheimers/

Dr. Royal Rife scientifically proved that everything has a resonant frequency signature of its own. For example, the carcinoma cancer cell has a resonant frequency of 2128 Hz. When a cell is resonated at it's own resonant frequency, the cell is destroyed. Two prime examples of this:
1. In the military, when a group of marching men walk across a wooden bridge, they must ALL walk at different footstep cadence vs. all walking in the same footstep beat otherwise, the bridge will collapse due to resonating at its own frequency. 2. An opera singer is capable of shattering a wine glass by singing a note that matched the resonant frequency of the wine glass.
Cancer, parasites, viruses, bacteria and other organisms all have their own resonant frequencies. The frequencies that destroy these organisms are known as "Rife Frequencies". The difference between Rife frequencies and our RASHA Morphogenetic frequencies is our technology utilises scalar plasma energy (energy encoded with information) while Rife frequencies (energy) do not.
There are no viruses or diseases that are resistant to Rife Frequencies, so just imagine the efficacy in OUR powerful scalar morphogenetic technology and software.

Modern medical innovations have given doctors the power to screen for a variety of cancers, and that’s great, but screening for multiple types of cancers at the same time, and with a single test, is essentially still a pipe dream.
However, that may be about to change thanks to a new kind of blood test that researchers say is showing serious promise. The test, developed by a company called GRAIL, may be able to accurately detect over 20 different types of cancer by hunting for their unique signatures in the DNA found in a blood sample.
A press release from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute offers a brief explanation of how the new blood test works, and how it differs from existing cancer screening options:
In contrast to “liquid biopsies,” which detect genetic mutations or other cancer-related alterations in DNA, the technology focuses on modifications to DNA known as methyl groups. Methyl groups are chemical units that can be attached to DNA, in a process called methylation, to control which genes are “on” and which are “off.” Abnormal patterns of methylation turn out to be, in many cases, more indicative of cancer – and cancer type – than mutations are.
To put the new blood test to the, well, test, researchers applied it to over 3,500 blood samples from a wide variety of patients, some of whom had already been diagnosed with cancer. The results showed the test reliably identified the existence of cancer while also revealing the area of the body where the cancer first took root.
“Our previous work indicated that methylation-based assays outperform traditional DNA-sequencing approaches to detecting multiple forms of cancer in blood samples,” Geoffrey Oxnard, MD, lead author of the research, said in a statement. “The results of the new study demonstrate that such assays are a feasible way of screening people for cancer.”
Of particular note is the fact that the test drastically minimizes false positives, with just 0.6% of results indicating the presence of cancer where none actually existed. In the samples where the test was able to determine the origin of the cancer (97%), the accuracy of the prediction was an impressive 89%.
This is some seriously remarkable stuff, and could make cancer screening efforts more efficient in the near future.

Your baby looks like your ex? This research is scarier than Alien Daisy Buchanan Your ex is not meant to lurk inside you, defying your current partner’s sperm and waiting to break forth in miniature form Thu 2 Oct 2014 08.08 EDTLast modified on Wed 22 Feb 2017 13.26 EST www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/oct/02/baby-looks-like-ex-research
‘What you won’t often witness is the father turning tenderly to the mother and murmuring, ‘Hey, he looks just like Phil! You know, your ex? With the motorbike, and sociopathic tendencies?'.' Photograph: Alamy
If you were to spend time in a maternity ward listening to proud new parents, you’d definitely hear them discussing their offspring’s genetic heritage. Does the new baby have her eyes or his? Could that be great Uncle Charlie’s nose? What you won’t often witness is the father turning tenderly to the mother and murmuring, “Hey, he looks just like Phil! You know, your ex? With the motorbike, and sociopathic tendencies?” But new research suggests that this scenario is more plausible than it sounds.
It has been shown that newborns may resemble a mother’s previous sexual partner, after scientists at the University of South Wales observed an instance of telegony – physical traits of previous sexual partners being passed down to future children.
The researchers found that, for fruit flies, the size of the offspring matched the size of the first male the mother mated with – not its biological father. It is thought that molecules of the semen produced by the first partner might be absorbed by the mother’s immature eggs.
“We don’t know yet whether this applies to other species,” explains author of the study, Dr Angela Crean. Too late, Dr Crean! I’m already working my way through a mental Powerpoint presentation of my exes and trying to work out whether I can travel back in time with a box of Durex.
The idea of our unborn children resembling partners past might initially fill us with horror, no matter how amicably your relationship ended. Your ex is not supposed to lurk inside you, waiting to burst forth in miniature form. This idea is scarier than Alien.
I’m sure plenty of prospective mothers feel incredibly guilty about the fact that they might be, unwittingly, about to fill the world with children who blow their nose on their sleeves, claim they have a moral objection to booking restaurants, and pronounce the eighth letter of the alphabet “haitch”.
However, if the hypothesis holds, it might not be entirely bad news. Whether we like it or not, the people we choose to date, and sleep with, reflect something of ourselves. It’s easy to write off past relationships in the same way we shudder at old pictures in which you’re wearing embellished, stonewashed denim. “Past me was such an idiot!” I often think. “I’m much wiser now.” But we ought to give our old selves more credit for doing what seemed right at the time – or at least acknowledge the fact that every decision which feels right now could seem just as foolish in five years.
If your children do share some traits with your former partners, it probably only shows the way that you were previously nurtured affects their nature. You’re human, and just as you’ll face difficult choices and make mistakes after they’re born, the way you behaved before they were born could impact on them too. Essentially, you have to accept that your old partners had admirable qualities which drew you to them in the first place, and that you’d be happy to pass them on to a child - or you have to admit that your current partner might also have bad qualities, and you’d be better off if you didn’t have children with anyone.
Despite the fact there’s still no solid evidence that the study applies to human reproduction, small children and exes can be equally irritating. You might, sleep deprived and frazzled, look at the freshly bathed toddler who has just started to massage their scalp with spaghetti hoops and think, “My ex used to make me feel this weepy and panicky! This must be his baby!” – when they don’t really have anything in common, just that your former partner used to act like a big baby and your infant child actually is one.
Ultimately, it’s down to you to teach your child to be a responsible citizen and happy human being. You may not have had the power to change your ex’s worst habits, but if the theory of telegony is true, you can find some satisfaction in taking control of the way their descendants behave.

America's 14-year-old 'Top Young Scientist' has a plan to fight superbug diseases Yahoo Finance yFinance Features,Yahoo Finance•November 1, 2019 Your average American 14-year-old just started his or her freshman year in high school. They might be trying out for their school basketball team for winter sports or they could be auditioning for the school play.
But Kara Fan is not your run-of-the-mill 14-year-old. She is America’s Top Young Scientist.
Kara Fan stands in front of the Nano-particle liquid bandage poster she presented at the 3M Young Scientist Challenge in St. Paul, MN. (Source: Yahoo Finance)
“The moment before they called my name, I was really nervous because like the other finalists... their presentations are really good and I thought like they would win,” the San Diego native told Yahoo Finance. “When they announced my name, I was really surprised actually.”
To win that claim, Fan’s nano-particle liquid bandage had to surpass the experiments of hundreds of fifth to eighth graders as well as nine other finalists. The competition encouraged the participants to solve a global issue and included runner-up Caroline Crouchley’s environmentally safer and sustainable public transport train and fourth-place Camellia Sharma’s underground water leakage system.

‘I can spread the awareness of the antibiotic crisis’
Fan started developing her liquid bandage – using lemon leaf, silver nitrate, and a water-soluble polymer – in April 2019 to fight the overuse of antibiotics. According to the CDC, roughly 2 million people every year suffer a bacterial infection in the U.S. and about 23,000 passed away as a result. If left alone, a UN study reported, drug-resistant diseases or the “superbug” could lead to 10 million deaths across the globe by 2050.
“I can spread the awareness of the antibiotic crisis and just show them the statistics,” Fan said. “The overuse of antibiotics have led to antibiotic resistance infections and it's going to kill a lot of people.”
When Fan’s sprayable bandage dries on a person’s skin, it creates a thin layer that protects the wounded area while breaking the cell wall and killing the bacteria on the skin. After experimenting with copper nitrate to fight bacteria, switching to the silver nitrate ended up being the major catalyst to seeing results for her award-winning project.

“Thousands of years ago, ancient people would use copper and silver to eat with and they would drink water from like copper bowls to kill bacteria,” Fan explained. “I found out that it didn't work. So I used nano silver.”
Sir Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin – a type of antibiotic – is Fan’s favorite scientific discovery. That said, she doesn’t think humans should rely too heavily on penicillin.
“It has saved millions of lives,” she said. “But since it's been misused and overused, we should be aware of this crisis.”
Following her years at Westview High School, Fan hopes to continue her biology track at Stanford University. Along with the $25,000 cash prize she won on October 29, becoming America’s Top Young Scientist may help get the private university’s attention.
The simplest description of kombucha is that it is fermented tea. Sure, we all know what tea is, but what exactly is fermentation? And how could a whole generation of Americans have been raised thinking “fermented” means “rotten and moldy” or “alcoholic” when for millennia fermentation has been inextricably linked to human survival? The good news is that fermentation’s stock is on the rise, and kombucha is a big reason why.
The stress response is one of the body’s most valuable defense mechanisms. When our body perceives a threat, a snap decision must be made — fight or flight. Adrenaline and cortisol are released to increase heart rate, sharpen the senses, and prepare muscles for quick action. This is exactly what we need when surviving in the wild.
The modern human, however, confronts multiple stressors — almost always non-life-threatening — on a daily basis, and this over activation of the stress response has proven detrimental to our health, creating a host of adverse effects on the body.
While many medications and treatments can alleviate the symptoms of chronic overstimulation of the stress response, they don’t tend to address the source of the problem, which is that modern humans are stressed out to the max. There are solutions: making time for exercise, getting enough sleep, enjoying the company of good friends, communing with nature, taking time to unplug from the doom-and-gloom news and electronic media. Adding kombucha to the mix can help too! Here are five ways kombucha relieves stress.
1. Kombucha is an adaptogen An adaptogen is a plant or plant-based derivative (fermented tea in this case) that normalizes and balances the body, benefiting the entire physiology rather than a specific organ or system. Adaptogens are generally very good sources of antioxidants, which eliminate free radicals that cause oxidative stress. They also provide liver protection, reduce cravings for sugar and alcohol, and boost immunity, energy, and stamina.
2. Kombucha supports healthy digestion Kombucha regulates the digestive system by increasing the acidity of the gut. Gut acidity is crucial for easing digestion and absorbing nutrients from food. Stress often manifests in the gut as irritable bowel syndrome or ulcers, both of which are aided by improved digestion and acidity.
3. Kombucha contains B vitamins and vitamin C Kombucha contains vitamins B1 (thiamine), B6, and B12, all of which are known to help the body fight depression, stabilize mood, and improve concentration. It also contains vitamin C, which suppresses the release of cortisol (one of the stress hormones). Higher levels of cortisol in the blood contribute to hypertension, depression, and impaired mental clarity.
Moreover, while these vitamins are found in kombucha in trace amounts, they are bioavailable — that is, they are in a form that the body has evolved to assimilate instantly. In contrast, oftentimes the vitamins in supplements are not easily assimilated by the body; they lack the cofactors or enzymes found in whole foods that are needed to catalyze the absorption process.
4. Drinking kombucha can reduce caffeine and sugar intake Choosing kombucha over coffee as your morning eye-opener means less caffeine in your system. And the L-theanine in tea counteracts the harmful effects of caffeine, providing focused, calm energy.
5. Low amounts of alcohol have a beneficial effect on the body Kombucha is not an alcoholic ferment like beer or wine, but it does contain trace amounts of alcohol. These naturally occurring low levels of alcohol increase feelings of well-being and decrease stress. Numerous studies show that moderate consumption of alcohol has many positive benefits.
The brain waves generated during deep sleep appear to trigger a cleaning system in the brain that protects it against Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Electrical signals known as slow waves appear just before a pulse of fluid washes through the brain, presumably removing toxins associated with Alzheimer's, researchers reported Thursday in the journal Science.
The finding could help explain a puzzling link between sleep and Alzheimer's, says Laura Lewis, an author of the study and an assistant professor in the department of biomedical engineering at Boston University.
The Brain During Sleep During deep sleep, waves of cerebrospinal fluid (blue) coincide with temporary decreases in blood flow (red). Less blood in the brain means more room for the fluid to carry away toxins, including those associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Sleep brain Credit: Fultz et al., 2019
"Some disruption to the way sleep is working could potentially be contributing to the decline in brain health," Lewis says.
The finding also suggests that people might be able to reduce their risk of Alzheimer's by ensuring that they get high-quality sleep, says William Jagust, a professor of public health and neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, who was not involved in the study.
Scientists are already testing other lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise changes, to protect brain health. And sleep should be "high on the list" of measures worth trying, he says.
The study comes after decades of questions about the link between sleep and Alzheimer's.
Studies show that people with Alzheimer's often have sleep problems. And there's growing evidence that people with sleep problems are more vulnerable to Alzheimer's.
But there has never been a good explanation for this connection.
"It's been known for a long time that sleep is really important for brain health," Lewis says, "but why it is was more mysterious."
Lewis and a team of researchers wanted to solve the mystery.
So they found a way to use cutting-edge MRI techniques and other technologies to watch what was going on in the brains of 11 sleeping people.
One of the things they monitored was cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF, the liquid that flows through the brain and spinal cord.
"And that's when we discovered that during sleep, there are these really large, slow waves occurring maybe once every 20 seconds of CSF washing into the brain," Lewis says.
These waves were a bit like the oscillations of a very slow washing machine.
Earlier studies of animals had found that the flow of CSF increases during sleep and helps carry away waste products, including the toxins associated with Alzheimer's.
But Lewis' team was able to see this process occur in the brains of people — in real time. And that led to another discovery.
"Before each wave of fluid, we would actually see a wave of electrical activity in the neurons," Lewis says. "This electrical wave always happens first, and the CSF wave always seems to follow seconds later."
The finding suggests that the electrical wave was triggering each wash cycle.
And the brain wave in question was a very familiar one called a slow wave. Slow waves appear when a person enters the state known as deep sleep, or non-rapid eye movement sleep.
And they play a role in both memory and brain disease, Lewis says.
"It's already known that people with Alzheimer's disease have less of these electrophysiological slow waves, so they have smaller and fewer slow waves," she says.
The new study suggests that this reduction in slow waves is reducing wash cycles in the brain, which would limit the brain's ability to clear out the toxins associated with Alzheimer's.
"It would make sense that if there's large waves of fluid, of CSF, that that might in turn cause mixing and dispersion with other fluids in the brain and help with this waste removal process," Lewis says.
Lewis' team made one more discovery about sleeping brains. As the flow of cerebrospinal fluid increases, blood flow decreases.
Less blood in the brain means more room for CSF to carry away waste.
The study's findings fit nicely with other research on sleep and Alzheimer's disease, Jagust says.
He was part of a team that studied the relationship between slow-wave sleep and a toxin called beta-amyloid, which accumulates in the brains of people with Alzheimer's.
They found something a bit disturbing.
"It's a vicious cycle where amyloid decreases sleep, and decreased sleep results in more amyloid," Jagust says.
The new study results suggest that the increase in amyloid could be the result of less waste removal in the brain, he says.
But Alzheimer's, like heart disease, is likely to have more than one cause, Jagust says.
"There are a bunch of things that are probably contributing to people's likelihood [of] getting Alzheimer's," he says, "and I think sleep is going to turn out to be one of them."
During deep sleep, waves of cerebrospinal fluid (blue) coincide with temporary decreases in blood flow (red). Less blood in the brain means more room for the fluid to carry away toxins, including those associated with Alzheimer's disease. Fultz et al. 2019
We know that people with Alzheimer's often have sleep problems. But does it work the other way? Do problems with sleep set the stage for this degenerative brain disease? Jon Hamilton introduces us to some scientists looking into that connection. In a recent study, researchers observed a key role deep sleep potentially plays in maintaining brain health and protecting the brain against Alzheimer's. This study falls into at least two categories: Epigenetics AND the Autonomic Nervous System. Both are discussed in this thread. It is more anecdotal evidence of the MIND BODY connection. You have heard the expression "We are what we eat?" Well, here is another for you to think about...."We are what we think."
FILE - In this Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018 file photo, a pedestrian is silhouetted against wet pavement in Kansas City, Mo. In a first-of-its-kind report released Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that millions of cases of heart disease and other illnesses can be linked to abuse and other physical and psychological harm that patients suffered as children. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials estimate that millions of cases of heart disease and other illnesses are linked to abuse and other physical and psychological harm suffered early in life.
In a report released Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tried to estimate the impact of harmful childhood experiences on health in adulthood.
Health officials acknowledged the study does not prove that these experiences directly cause certain illnesses. And they were not able to rule out other possible factors, such as the stress caused by financial family problems.
But the link is strong, and is bolstered by many other studies, said Jim Mercy, who oversees the CDC's violence prevention programs.
"There's a lot of evidence connecting these things," and it's become clear that the more harmful incidents a child suffers, the more likely their health suffers later, he said.
For at least two decades, researchers have been looking at how suffering or witnessing traumatic events as a child affects the likelihood of physical injury or illness later in life.
Researchers say such stressful experiences can affect how the body develops, and can also put a child on a path to smoking, drug use, and other unhealthy behaviors.
The topic has been getting more attention in recent years from public health officials. California's recently-appointed surgeon general has made childhood trauma and what is known as toxic stress a priority.
CDC has been involved in previous research on the topic, but Tuesday's report is the agency's first on the national impact of the problem.
Researchers are increasingly focused on developing ways to reduce what is now a well-established link, said Dr. Dayna Long, a researcher at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
She called the CDC report "critical" because it adds important estimates about the potential impact preventive measures might have.
"Trauma really is a public health crisis that everybody needs to start addressing," she said.
The findings are based on questionnaires of about 144,000 adults in 25 states that were conducted in 2015, 2016 or 2017. The surveys asked people about health problems. They also were asked about childhood experiences with divorce, abuse, domestic violence, or drug abuse in the home, or a relative's mental illness.
The survey did not assess how severe the experiences were, and it's not clear if some types of incidents are more harmful than others.
But CDC officials are recommending programs to try to stop such incidents or lessen their impact. They mentioned mentoring programs, parent education, and paid family leave.
The CDC found:
—Adults who experienced the most potentially traumatic events were more likely to smoke and drink heavily.
—Women, blacks and American Indians and Alaskan Natives were more likely to experience four or more kinds of harm during childhood.
—Preventing such events could potentially reduce the number of adults with weight problems by 2%, the number of adults with coronary heart disease by 13%, and the number of adults with depression by 44%. ___

INFORMATION ON THE WONDERS OF LIFE GIVING SUBSTANCES!!!
The first sleep book by a leading scientific expert—Professor Matthew Walker, Director of UC Berkeley’s Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab—reveals his groundbreaking exploration of sleep, explaining how we can harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better.
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life—eating, drinking, and reproducing—the purpose of sleep remained elusive.
An explosion of scientific discoveries in the last twenty years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Within the brain, sleep enriches our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming mollifies painful memories and creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge to inspire creativity.
Walker answers important questions about sleep: how do caffeine and alcohol affect sleep? What really happens during REM sleep? Why do our sleep patterns change across a lifetime? How do common sleep aids affect us and can they do long-term damage? Charting cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs, and synthesizing decades of research and clinical practice, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; enhance the education and lifespan of our children, and boost the efficiency, success, and productivity of our businesses. Clear-eyed, fascinating, and accessible, Why We Sleep is a crucial and illuminating book.

Suggested Products SES Carbon60 In Olive Oil N-Acetyl Cysteine Update 7/28/19. C60, also called Fullerene C60 (carbon 60) and buckyballs is one of the most unique antioxidant /anti-aging compounds I've seen in recent memory. This product, made by SES Research, is fast becoming very popular in the world of anti-aging bio-hackers, because of research reporting it has doubled the lifespan of mice. In this SES C60 review, I'll help you understand what Fullerene carbon 60 is and the anti-aging research. Along the way, I'll address other questions too like Is C60 safe? Does it really work? Is it a scam? Is C60 the super antioxidant everybody has been waiting for? Let's see… supplementclarity.com/ses-fullerene-c60-review/
Other Anti-Aging Reviews Protandim Review Serovital HGH Review SeroVital Hair Regeneres Review Gray Hair Supplements Review PHYTO RE30 Review Elysium Basis Review Niagen Review NMN Review 1 What Is Fullerene C60? There are many different types of Fullerene molecules (also called buckyballs). Fullerine C60 is the smallest of them. It's composed of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a specific shape. That shape is similar to the geodesic dome, invented by Richard Buckminster Fuller. This is why C60 is also called “Fullerine C60.”
Tip: The geodesic dome looks like that big golf ball thingy at Epcot Center.
2 How Does Carbon C60 Work? SES-Reseach-C60 Image source: Ses.Res.com Fullerene C60 has antioxidant properties. But, this molecule is said to work differently than other antioxidants you may have heard of such as vitamin C or glutathione.
Fullerene C60 appears to act like superoxide dismutase (SOD) a powerful antioxidant enzyme – at least that's what researchers in 2008 noted in their mouse study. Not all studies show this, however.
3 Fullerene C60 Lifespan Research Can Carbon 60 in olive oil double your lifespan? To date, there have been two investigations on Fullerene C60 as it pertains to prolonging the lifespan. Both of them are mouse studies.
Researchers in 2008 noted mice lived longer and had better brain function after treatment with C60. In 2012, other investigators reported C60 doubled the lifespans of mice compared to those which did not get C60. In this study, Carbon 60 buckyballs were injected into the rats. This study specifically used SES C60 in olive oil. Any human research? Not at this time.
No research has been conducted involving humans. Because of this, we do not know if Carbon 60 has the same effects on people as it appears to in mice.

Politics in Healing: The Suppression and Manipulation of American Medicine Paperback – December 1, 2000 by Daniel Haley (Author)
Haley gathers 12 medical outsiders' stories to support his theory that the AMA, FDA, and big pharmaceutical companies conspire to prevent new ideas from entering medical research and practice. His subjects include Andrew Ivy, who advocated the discredited anticancer drug Krebiozen; anticancer herbalist Harry Hoxsey; anticancer blood researcher Gaston Naessens; and antineoplastin researcher Stanislaw Burzynski. Those persecuted medical investigators are fairly well known, but some of Haley's other cases concern forgotten men like William Koch, developer of the antipolio drug Glyoxylide, whom many may find more interesting because of their obscurity. The stories of all 12 are often absent from current medical histories, which alone makes this book worthwhile. Haley's thesis that many of his subjects were victims of organized medicine, however, remains unproven. Moreover, his assertion that at least five of the 12 should have been Nobel laureates strains credibility, and the implication that the AMA controls the decisions of the Nobel committees seems dubious. --William Beatty, American Library Association.

IT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT MOLECULE you need to stay healthy and prevent disease — yet you’ve probably never heard of it. It’s the secret to prevent aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia and more, and necessary to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer’s disease. There are more than 89,000 medical articles about it — but your doctor doesn’t know how address the epidemic deficiency of this critical life-giving molecule …
What is it? I’m talking about the mother of all antioxidants, the master detoxifier and maestro of the immune system: GLUTATHIONE (pronounced “gloota-thigh-own”).
The good news is that your body produces its own glutathione. The bad news is that poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation all deplete your glutathione.
This leaves you susceptible to unrestrained cell disintegration from oxidative stress, free radicals, infections and cancer. And your liver gets overloaded and damaged, making it unable to do its job of detoxification.
In treating chronically ill patients with Functional Medicine for more than 10 years, I have discovered that glutathione deficiency is found in nearly all very ill patients. These include people with chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease, cancer, chronic infections, autoimmune disease, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, asthma, kidney problems, liver disease and more.
At first I thought that this was just a coincidental finding, but over the years I have come to realize that our ability to produce and maintain a high level of glutathione is critical to recovery from nearly all chronic illness — and to preventing disease and maintaining optimal health and performance. The authors of those 76,000 medical articles on glutathione I mentioned earlier have found the same thing!
So in today’s blog I want to explain what glutathione is, why it’s important and give you 9 tips that will help you optimize your glutathione levels, improve your detoxification system and protect help yourself from chronic illness.
What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally all the time in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids — cysteine, glycine and glutamine.
The secret of its power is the sulfur (SH) chemical groups it contains. Sulfur is a sticky, smelly molecule. It acts like fly paper and all the bad things in the body stick onto it, including free radicals and toxins like mercury and other heavy metals.
Normally glutathione is recycled in the body — except when the toxic load becomes too great. And that explains why we are in such trouble …
In my practice, I test the genes involved in glutathione metabolism. These are the genes involved in producing enzymes that allow the body to create and recycle glutathione in the body. These genes have many names, such as GSTM1, GSTP1 and more.
Nearly all my very sick patients are missing this function. The one-third of our population that suffers from chronic disease is missing this essential gene. That includes me.
These genes impaired in some people for a variety of important reasons. We humans evolved in a time before the 80,000 toxic industrial chemicals found in our environment today were introduced into our world, before electromagnetic radiation was everywhere and before we polluted our skies, lakes, rivers, oceans and teeth with mercury and lead.
That is why most people survived with the basic version of the genetic detoxification software encoded in our DNA, which is mediocre at ridding the body of toxins. At the time humans evolved we just didn’t need more. Who knew we would be poisoning ourselves and eating a processed, nutrient-depleted diet thousands of years later?
Because most of us didn’t require additional detoxification software, almost of half of the population now has a limited capacity to get rid of toxins. These people are missing GSTM1 function — one of the most important genes needed in the process of creating and recycling glutathione in the body.
Nearly all my very sick patients are missing this function. The one-third of our population that suffers from chronic disease is missing this essential gene. That includes me. Twenty years ago I became mercury poisoned and suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome due to this very problem. My GSTM1 function was inadequate and I didn’t produce enough glutathione as a result. Eventually, my body broke down and I became extremely ill …
This is the same problem I see in so many of my patients. They are missing this critical gene and they descend into disease as a result. Let me explain how this happens …
The Importance of Glutathione in Protecting Against Chronic Illness
Glutathione is critical for one simple reason: It recycles antioxidants. You see, dealing with free radicals is like handing off a hot potato. They get passed around from vitamin C to vitamin E to lipoic acid and then finally to glutathione which cools off the free radicals and recycles other antioxidants. After this happens, the body can “reduce” or regenerate another protective glutathione molecule and we are back in business.
However, problems occur when we are overwhelmed with too much oxidative stress or too many toxins. Then the glutathione becomes depleted and we can no longer protect ourselves against free radicals, infections, or cancer and we can’t get rid of toxins. This leads to further sickness and soon we are in the downward spiral of chronic illness.
But that’s not all. Glutathione is also critical in helping your immune system do its job of fighting infections and preventing cancer. That’s why studies show that it can help in the treatment of AIDS.(i)
Glutathione is also the most critical and integral part of your detoxification system. All the toxins stick onto glutathione, which then carries them into the bile and the stool — and out of your body.
And lastly, it also helps us reach peak mental and physical function. Research has shown that raised glutathione levels decrease muscle damage, reduce recovery time, increase strength and endurance and shift metabolism from fat production to muscle development.
If you are sick or old or are just not in peak shape, you likely have glutathione deficiency. In fact, the top British medical journal, the Lancet, found the highest glutathione levels in healthy young people, lower levels in healthy elderly, lower still in sick elderly and the lowest of all in the hospitalized elderly. (ii)
Keeping yourself healthy, boosting your performance, preventing disease and aging well depends on keeping your glutathione levels high. I’ll say it again … Glutathione is so important because it is responsible for keeping so many of the keys to UltraWellness optimized.
It is critical for immune function and controlling inflammation. It is the master detoxifier and the body’s main antioxidant, protecting our cells and making our energy metabolism run well.
And the good news is that you can do many things to increase this natural and critical molecule in your body. You can eat glutathione-boosting foods. You can exercise. And you can take glutathione-boosting supplements. Let’s review more specifics about each.
9 Tips to Optimize your Glutathione Levels
These 9 tips will help you improve your glutathione levels, improve your health, optimize your performance and live a long, healthy life.
Eat Foods that Support Glutathione Production
1. Consume sulfur-rich foods. The main ones in the diet are garlic, onions and the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, watercress, etc.).
2. Try bioactive whey protein. This is great source of cysteine and the amino acid building blocks for glutathione synthesis. As you know, I am not a big fan of dairy. But this is an exception — with a few warnings. The whey protein MUST be bioactive and made from non-denatured proteins (“denaturing” refers to the breakdown of the normal protein structure). Choose non-pasteurized and non-industrially produced milk that contains no pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics. Immunocal is a prescription bioactive non-denatured whey protein that is even listed in the Physician’s Desk Reference.
Exercise for Your Way to More Glutathione
3. Exercise boosts your glutathione levels and thereby helps boost your immune system, improve detoxification and enhance your body’s own antioxidant defenses. Start slow and build up to 30 minutes a day of vigorous aerobic exercise like walking or jogging, or play various sports. Strength training for 20 minutes 3 times a week is also helpful.
Take Glutathione Supporting Supplements
One would think it would be easy just to take glutathione as a pill, but the body digests protein — so you wouldn’t get the benefits if you did it this way. However, the production and recycling of glutathione in the body requires many different nutrients and you CAN take these. Here are the main supplements that need to be taken consistently to boost glutathione. Besides taking a multivitamin and fish oil, supporting my glutathione levels with these supplements is the most important thing I do every day for my personal health.
4. N-acetyl-cysteine. This has been used for years to help treat asthma and lung disease and to treat people with life-threatening liver failure from Tylenol overdose. In fact, I first learned about it in medical school while working in the emergency room. It is even given to prevent kidney damage from dyes used during x-ray studies.
5. Alpha lipoic acid. This is a close second to glutathione in importance in our cells and is involved in energy production, blood sugar control, brain health and detoxification. The body usually makes it, but given all the stresses we are under, we often become depleted.
6. Methylation nutrients (folate and vitamins B6 and B12). These are perhaps the most critical to keep the body producing glutathione. Methylation and the production and recycling of glutathione are the two most important biochemical functions in your body. Take folate (especially in the active form of 5 methyltetrahydrofolate), B6 (in active form of P5P) and B12 (in the active form of methylcobalamin).
7. Selenium. This important mineral helps the body recycle and produce more glutathione.
8. A family of antioxidants including vitamins C and E (in the form of mixed tocopherols), work together to recycle glutathione.
9. Milk thistle (silymarin) has long been used in liver disease and helps boost glutathione levels.
So use these nine tips and see how they work to help you optimize your glutathione levels. When you do, you will take one more step to lifelong vibrant health.
On December 16, 1994, Kevin F. Montague bought contaminated meat from his local Von's Supermarket where he lives in the San Fernando Valley of the greater Los Angeles Area of California. After spending 5 days in a local Sherman Oaks hospital to fight and save his life, his doctors released him thinking he was past the worst of what the meat had done to him. Unfortunately, within 30 days his condition greatly worsened.
Over all he was enduring over 36 life threatening complications and symptoms, before the day came when his primary care physician, Dr. Nechemia Peleg told him; "There is nothing more western medicine can do for you. You are going to die soon. We don't know what is killing you. Put your affairs in order and get ready for death." Mr. Montague was not yet 37 years old when he was told this grim news. Worse than that, the grocer covered up the entire affair and never took responsibility financially to help Mr. Montague through what would become a 17 year battle to save his life, with only the support of his late cousin; Charles M. Ryan, who was caregiver to Mr. Montague.
While all of this got started through the contaminated sausage, the sausage was about to be a doorway of discovery to an amazing syndrome/process Mr. Montague was uncovering in his body, proving the body creates its own internal parasites while it is dying and from this incredible gift of understanding, he is now able to explain so many of the diseases that plague man which are unrelated to environmental pathogens and pollutants: A process he has named the CDS/PD process: Chronic Disease Syndrome/Premature Decomposition Process. From this syndrome/process he is able to effectively explain the cause of things like multiple sclerosis, heart disease, diabetes, strokes of all kinds, cancers of all kinds, spontaneous human combustion, Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and so much more. He shows how this process can never be "cured" using drugs and surgery: It is an all natural process which can only be conquered using all natural approaches. It is a process doctors all over the world are ignorant to and need to learn, if they are to finally help those with chronic health issues, especially those with cancer and even AIDS. The answers will surprise you and make you rethink all you've been taught in your schooling, even if you only have a high school education, not University degrees like Mr. Montague has. Mr. Montague is a scholar and a scientist by background.
Western medical doctors are not taught how to change the biological terrain when it gets corrupted. So, if you are having trouble getting to the answers with your chronic disease issues, you need to buy a copy of this book! It is knowledge ahead of its time ready for you now; up against western medicine and its politics. It is not too late for you to learn the truth and give you a fighting chance to really master your chronic health issues and win.

First, stay out of daycare centers, hospitals and nursing homes when possible (Where the bugs seem to flourish). Secondly educate yourself on alternative meds and treatments BEFORE you get sick. Third, proper nutrition and deep sleep go a long way in keeping the body healthy. Fourth, most disease proliferate in the gut. An unhealthy or poorly maintained gut will allow disease to take root and grow. A good colonic or enema can neutralize the gut making it impossible for the bad critters to survive. Then make sure you are using quality pre and pro biotics. There are posts on all of these things within this thread among them the value of a good Monolaurin supplement (NaturalCure labs), a true colloidal silver (Mesosilver by Purest Colloids,Inc.) and any number of herbal tinctures and combinations by quality companies. The tinctures work best as bulk herbs lose their potency over time. Also, go to some of the online health forums like the two I just posted. Chances are you are not alone and other people have recommendations.
Reigning in a "post-antibiotic era," the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 2.8 million people are infected and more than 35,000 people die every year from the bugs.
Superbugs are hard to treat bacteria and fungi that have developed resistances to common drugs, like antibiotics or antifungals, that had been used to treat them.
"Stop referring to a coming post-antibiotic era – it’s already here," CDC Director Robert Redfield says in a letter accompanying the report.
Drug-resistant bugs are in every U.S. state and around the globe, and they now cause nearly twice as many deaths as they did when the CDC reported on it in 2013.
Here's what you need to know about superbugs:
What is a superbug and is there a treatment? Superbugs are bacteria or fungi that are resistant to antibiotics or antifungals, says Dr. Alyssa Letourneau, director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.
Antibiotics can be very narrow and target one specific bacteria, or they can have a broad range of the bacteria they fight.
When a patient comes in with a bacterial infection, a doctor may prescribe a drug that targets the specific "bad" bacteria causing the illness. These antibiotics, in theory, will be better at eliminating the bacteria causing the infection while not harming the "good" bacteria in a patient's system.
But bacteria are smart, Letourneau says, and they've been around for millions of years, so they can over time mutate to become resistant to the drug that fights them.
For example, if a child has many ear infections one year, she says, the next year the penicillin used to treat them may not be as effective.
"If we take an antibiotic and we put it with bacterium, it's pretty easy to select resistance. It's really a natural process," says Dr. Robin Patel, president of American Society for Microbiology and a doctor at the Mayo Clinic.
This process can happen in a matter of days.
If a bug resists the narrow-spectrum drug used to treat it, doctors can use broad-spectrum antibiotics. However, doctors ideally stay away from prescribing these antibiotics if unnecessary because they can target and kill more bacteria – including the good ones not causing harm, Letourneau says.
Those antibiotics "can be more toxic, can be more expensive, and also some times may not work," she says.
Using these antibiotics can expose more bacteria to the drug and then in turn allow them to become resistant, even if they weren't causing an infection in the first place, Patel says.
Over time, bacteria can become resistant to all types of antibiotics.
"Those are the ones that keep me up at night and that I worry about," Letourneau says.
What are the superbugs the CDC warned about? The CDC identified 18 bacteria and fungi for health officials to monitor, including five described as "urgent threats."
Among the urgent threats is Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus that began spreading among hospital and nursing home patients in the United States in 2015.
The urgent threats also included: Carbapenem-resistant acinetobacter; carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE); drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae; and clostridioides difficile, or C. diff.
How do superbugs spread? As bacteria and fungi are exposed to more drugs over time, they evolve and get better at staving off the antibiotics and antifungals from killing them.
According to the CDC report, the DNA in a bacterium or fungus can tell it to create specific proteins that drugs cannot break down, making that bacterium or fungus resistant to to the drug, which often targets proteins to kill it. www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/pdf/threats-report/2019-ar-threats-report-508.pdf
Bacteria can also share their drug resistance with other bacteria, Patel said. This involved sharing of genetic information between closely related bugs.
These resistances can develop within the bacteria people have in their bodies, and the bacteria can then spread from person to person, via animals and food or through the environment.
"It is an individual issue that we have to deal with but it's also a community issue and it's really a global issue," Patel said.
Additionally, otherwise healthy people may have a drug-resistant bacteria in their system, it just may not be causing an infection, Letourneau said.
Are symptoms of a superbug infection different and how do we treat them? No. Symptoms of a superbug infection are not always the same and they usually look like any other infection, Letourneau says.
People don't necessarily know they have a superbug, she says. They come in with a set of symptoms and the doctor must figure out their risk for a superbug.
Doctors must look through a person's medical history and travel records when determining if the person's bug will be resistant to an antibiotic.
Antibiotic-resistant bugs are more common in countries that prescribe antibiotics more readily, Letourneau says.
Diagnosing which drugs will work against a superbug requires laboratory testing. When a patient comes in with a set of symptoms, they may be prescribed an antibiotic but it may take days of tests to identify a drug that will work, Letourneau says.
The challenge is an issue of time, she says. The sooner a patient starts on a treatment, the better their chances are. But starting a patient on a broad-spectrum drug when they may not need it can contribute unnecessarily to antibiotic resistance, Letourneau says.
It's a challenge to balance treating individual patients while also thinking about public health. But medical professionals have gotten better at diagnosing and identifying drugs that patients are not yet resistant to, Patel says.
How do we treat superbugs resistant to all drugs? These bacteria and fungi are the ones doctors worry most about given how hard treating them can be and how quickly they're increasing in frequency, Letourneau says.
The first step is ensuring that it really is a drug-resistant bug that's causing the infection, Patel says. If there isn't any antibiotic that will work, doctors will turn to non-drug interventions. Surgery for an abscess with a deep infection, for example, can be better than an antibiotic in some cases, Patel says
There are also a number of new treatment options being developed still in their early stages. One option could be to use a virus to infect and kill a bacteria, Letourneau says.
In other cases, if a person has been given a broad-spectrum antibiotic that kills all the "good" bacteria in their gut, a stool transplant from someone with the right bacterial mix could provide enough of those bacteria to fight off the "bad" bacteria, Letourneau says.
Should I still take antibiotics if I'm sick? Antibiotics and antifungals are extremely effective in fighting off infections, and some antibiotics do still effectively treat superbugs not resistant to all drugs.
Antibiotics are "life-saving" drugs, and there's a reason they had been used for widely for so long. But, Patel says, "in the past we tended to think of antibiotics as fairly harmless drugs, and we need to reconsider that."
If you are prescribed an antibiotic by a doctor, take it as directed, Patel says. Do not self-prescribe antibiotics when you feel sick in a similar way, Patel adds.
Doctors ideally weigh whether an antibiotic is needed to treat a patient, but patients should feel empowered to ask their health care providers why an antibiotic is needed, Letourneau says.
In some cases, a virus may be causing an infection, and taking an antibiotic would not treat it. While cases of doctors prescribing antibiotics when unnecessary are decreasing, it does still occur and can contribute to drug-resistance, Letourneau says.
How do I prevent against getting a superbug? Basic hygiene and prevention methods that have been around for years are still advised to protect yourself.
Wash your hands with soap and water. Be careful handling food or when around someone who may be sick.
In some cases, vaccines may have been developed for bugs resistant to drugs, Patel says.

Vitamins and mineral supplements can be expensive. There are at least 90 essential vitamins and minerals that everyone should consume every day. In a balanced diet one might get the right balance however with today's overused soils, insecticides, radiation of foods, etc. chances are food may not give you what you need. And then there is individual genetic issues where certain gene mutations won't allow absorption of certain vitamins and minerals. In that case those vitamins need to be taken in a methylated form.
If you cannot afford supplements in general but have a good, well rounded diet you might want to consider taking enzyme tablets along with pre and pro biotics to help digest the food properly. Gluten is supposed to be one thing to be avoided because it causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines and doesn't allow proper absorption. Fermented liquids like Kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi etc. are especially good prebiotics to help digestion. Apple cider vinegar is another good additive especially on salads.
A multivitamin may help provide missing nutrients
Millions of Americans take a daily multivitamin. Health experts agree that certain groups of people can clearly benefit from a multivitamin, especially women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Others may not need a multivitamin because the majority of Americans get plenty of nutrients from their daily diet. However, most experts say there is no harm in taking a daily multivitamin and it might help with nutrient balance if, for example, you can't stand eating your veggies, or eat a restricted diet for whatever reason.
However, if you have any health concerns, pre-existing conditions, or take other supplements or medications, always check with your healthcare provider before adding a multivitamin into your regimen. Also check with your child's pediatrician before giving your child a multivitamin. We do not cover multivitamins for children because most experts say you should not give your child supplements without a specific recommendation from a healthcare provider.
The FDA made an important change to its folate/folic acid recommendations The FDA announced in July of 2016 that it was making changes to the way it measures folate, which is naturally occurring in foods, and folic acid, the synthetic form of folate. Since synthetic folate is metabolized differently than naturally-derived folate from food, synthetic folates are considered to be a higher concentration than they used to be. The new labeling takes into account both micrograms (mcg) and "dietary folate equivalents" (DFE). So, for example, if the folate levels in a supplement are exclusively from synthetic folate and currently are listed at 800 mcg, it will, in the future, be listed as 1,360 mcg DFE (the ratio is 1:1.7 for folic acid, 1:1 for naturally occurring folate). This means that, currently, almost all prenatal multivitamins with folic acid as its folate source actually provide more, sometimes much more, than the recommended RDA for folate, in spite of what the label says. However, since these rules have not yet taken effect, the current supplements are considered to be truthful in their labeling and still pass in testing for that. These labeling changes will take effect from July of 2018 to July 2019.
While there are legitimate concerns about ingesting too much folate because it can mask other issues, that is very rare and generally happens at much higher levels of supplementation. In the meantime, the take home message is this: if you're pregnant, folate supplementation is highly recommended. Work with your doctor to find the right type and amount of folate for you.
Types of Multivitamins Multivitamins for Adults over 50 Multivitamins for Women Prenatal Vitamins Multivitamins for Men Multivitamins for Adults over 50
The reason that there are so many vitamins targeting adults over age 50 is because they have different nutritional needs than their younger selves. Older adults typically need more B vitamins, especially B-12, more calcium, less iron (especially women), less folate, and may benefit from a thermogenic ingredient, which can help burn calories. Some companies even make multivitamins specifically for older men or women, with tweaks to their formulas targeting that demographic. One thing you do need to watch out for: if you take a blood thinner, vitamin K can interfere with it, so be sure to check with your doctor.
Multivitamins for Women Experts agree: all women of childbearing age should take a multivitamin containing folate or folic acid. Even though you may not be intending to conceive, if you do, the risk of neural tube defects is greatly increased without this supplement. The recommended daily allowance of folate for women ages 14 and up is 400 mcg DFE (which represents the FDA's newest measurements for folate as micrograms dietary folate equivalents). Multivitamins targeted at women under age 50 reflect these needs, and, in addition, often provide other nutrients, like iron, that menstruating women may lack.
Prenatal Vitamins As noted above, all women of childbearing age should take a daily multivitamin with at least 400 mcg DFE of folate. Pregnant and breastfeeding women need even more folic acid – 600 and 500 mcg DFE, respectively. Again, these reflect the FDA's latest guidelines in measuring folate supplements, making it even more important that you discuss your supplement needs with your doctor.
Multivitamins for Men Vitamins targeted at men often have formulations that specifically claim to benefit prostrate or heart health. While these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA, the fact is that men can benefit from a multivitamin made for them. For one thing, men generally don't need more than 8 mg (milligrams) of iron a day, which is easy to get from diet alone, so men's formulas tend to be very low in iron.
Are multivitamins safe? Enacted in 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) restricts the ability of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate supplements or ensure the safety of their ingredients. Under this act, the FDA is limited to collecting information on adverse side effects and to monitoring labeling claims. That means the most the FDA can do is pull a product off store shelves after a problem becomes apparent. It's up to the manufacturer to ensure that its multivitamins and supplements are safe. Under DSHEA, multivitamins don't require FDA approval, and manufacturers aren't required to register their supplements with the FDA before putting them on the market.
In an ideal world, manufacturers would be diligent about the safety of their multivitamins and truth in labeling. However, as professional testing shows, consumers need to be concerned about multivitamin quality. Among 35 products evaluated by ConsumerLab.com, 46 percent fail at least one test. Many don't meet the nutrient claims on the label, others improperly list ingredients.
It's not unusual for a multivitamin to exceed the upper limit (UL) for niacin and yet stay off of the "not approved" lists of most professional testing organizations. That's because niacin has thermogenic properties and is often targeted to other purposes, such as increased energy, aiding weight loss or lowering cholesterol. However, it's important to note that niacin can cause flushing and tingling at high doses -- and more serious side effects in a small minority of the population. Again, check with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.
Regardless of existing regulations, consumers should be skeptical about health claims listed on multivitamin labels. While the original provisions of DSHEA require that manufacturers make no claims about their products preventing or curing diseases, some do so anyway. Keep in mind, there are no studies to show that any supplement can prevent or cure any condition (with the notable exceptions of iodine and folic acid). The only reason for the average person to take a multivitamin is to ensure you have a full range of daily nutrients, especially if you don't eat a balanced diet.

Choosing a multivitamin can be as difficult as swallowing a horse pill, especially with the multitude of options available. The most important factor in finding the best multivitamin is choosing one that is verified to contain the amount of ingredients that the label claims and that has been tested to be free of contaminants.
Fortunately, several sources provide good coverage of multivitamins to help narrow your choices. ConsumerLab.com is the best reviewer of multivitamins; it tests dozens of products to ensure that they dissolve properly, contain the ingredients listed on the label, and aren't contaminated with lead and other toxins. Some manufacturers pay to have their multivitamins included in the testing through ConsumerLab.com's voluntary Quality Certification Program, but those products are clearly listed in the results table and that payment does not influence the results. ConsumerLab.com's reports are available to subscribers only.
Labdoor is another good source for laboratory testing of multivitamins. They test a number of multivitamins for label accuracy, product purity, nutritional value, ingredient safety and projected efficacy. The multis tested are also ranked and rated against one another. Full results are available after free registration. Consumer Reports evaluated multivitamins in September 2010 to ensure they meet nutrient claims and dissolve properly; that report, though older, is free to the public.
User reviews are helpful for information on side effects like stomach upset, any odor or taste issues, and how easy a multivitamin is to swallow. Overall, though, when making our choices we focused our attention on accuracy in labeling to be sure that, when you do make a decision, you get what you're paying for.
