New Book Exposes Secret Lyme Disease and Bioweapons LinkBITTEN: The Secret History of Lyme Disease and Biological Weapons While vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard, Kris Newby was bitten by an unseen tick. That one bite changed her life forever, pulling her into the abyss of a devastating illness that took ten doctors to diagnose and years to recover from: Newby had joined the ranks of the 400,000 Americans who are afflicted with Lyme disease each year.
As a science writer, she was driven to understand why this disease is so misunderstood and its patients so mistreated. This quest led her to Willy Burgdorfer, the Lyme microbe’s discoverer, who revealed that he had developed bug-borne bioweapons during the Cold War and believed that the Lyme epidemic was started by a military experiment gone wrong.
In a superb, meticulous work of narrative journalism, Bitten takes readers on a journey to investigate these claims, from tours of biological weapons facilities to interviews with biosecurity experts and microbiologists doing cutting-edge research, all the while uncovering darker truths about Burgdorfer. It also leads her to uncomfortable questions about why Lyme can be so difficult to both diagnose and treat, and why the government is so reluctant to classify chronic Lyme as a disease.
A gripping, infectious page-turner, Bitten will shed a terrifying new light on an epidemic that is exacting an incalculable toll on us, upending much of what we believe we know about it.
Praise for BITTEN
“In this riveting narrative, journalist Kris Newby reveals the backstory behind the bioweaponization of ticks during the Cold War. Her truly frightening report demands we take another look at the hidden complexity of Lyme disease and answer the question: What, exactly, is in those ticks?” —PAMELA WEINTRAUB, author of Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic and medical/psychology editor, Aeon
"Full of fascinating and sometimes-disturbing information, little of which is widely known." —KIRKUS REVIEW (starred review)
"It's a creepy, skin-crawling theory that seems to belong in a Stephen King novel." —BOOKLIST
“In turns a Cold War mystery story, medical memoir, and dogged investigation, BITTEN reveals groundbreaking evidence that sheds important new light on the genesis and evolution of one of the most baffling and controversial diseases of our time.” —CHARLES PILLER, investigative correspondent, Science
“Kris Newby got sick, and her investigation led to a dying germ warfare scientist. Her account of this enigmatic man’s life and work is unforgettable, powerful. This science writer can really write!” —JORDAN FISHER SMITH, author of Engineering Eden

A new book, Bottle of Lies, reveals serious safety and purity concerns about the global generic-drug supply. Tetra Images/Getty Images
As the cost of prescription medication soars, consumers are increasingly taking generic drugs: low-cost alternatives to brand-name medicines. Often health insurance plans require patients to switch to generics as a way of controlling costs. But journalist Katherine Eban warns that some of these medications might not be as safe, or effective, as we think.
Eban has covered the pharmaceutical industry for more than 10 years. She notes that most of the generic medicines being sold in the U.S. are manufactured overseas, mostly in India and China. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that it holds foreign plants to the same standards as U.S. drugmakers, but Eban's new book, Bottle of Lies, challenges that notion. She writes that the FDA often announces its overseas inspections weeks in advance, which allows plants where generic drugs are made the chance to fabricate data and results.
"These plants know that [the FDA inspectors are] coming," Eban says. "I discovered [some overseas drug companies] would actually ... alter documents, shred them, invent them, in some cases even steaming them overnight to make them look old."

(In a statement to NPR, the FDA said that Americans "can be confident in the quality of the products the FDA approves" and notes it has "conducted a number of unannounced inspections" at foreign plants over the past several years.)
'Bottle Of Lies' Exposes The Dark Side Of The Generic-Drug Boom BOOK REVIEWS 'Bottle Of Lies' Exposes The Dark Side Of The Generic Drug Boom As a result, Eban says, generic drugs sometimes go to market in the U.S. without proper vetting. She describes the FDA as "overwhelmed and underresourced" in its efforts to ensure the safety of overseas drug production.
Eban advises consumers to research who manufactures their generics and look up any problems that regulators have found out about them. But some consumers may find they are not allowed by their health plan to switch to alternatives, because of cost.
Interview Highlights Bottle of Lies Bottle of Lies The Inside Story of the Generic Drug Boom
by Katherine Eban
Hardcover, 482 pages purchase
On why many drug companies moved production overseas
There were a couple of reasons for this surge in globalization in the drug industry. One was environmental regulations. ... How are you going to safely dispose of all the chemicals and solvents that you're using? And ... there was less environmental regulation overseas. But another one is: If you move your manufacturing plant to India, you're going to save a huge amount on labor costs and supplies — ingredients — overnight.
And so what you saw was a huge migration, both of manufacturing to Indian-owned companies, Chinese-owned companies, but also Western- and U.S.-based companies, buying up manufacturing plants overseas and moving their manufacturing there.
On how the 1984 Hatch-Waxman Act changed the generic-drug industry
What it created was a pathway at the FDA, a distinct application process for generics, because prior to Hatch-Waxman, basically the generic companies had to do the same set of tests [and] clinical studies that the brand did, and Hatch-Waxman said, you know what? We're gonna give you an abbreviated application. You can do the clinical studies on many fewer patients, because we've already proven safety and efficacy of this molecule in the human body.
But what Hatch-Waxman did that really ignited the generic-drug revolution is it gave the companies an incentive: The incentive was called "first to file," and it said if you are the first company to submit your application — and literally first by the minute or the second — and you get approved, you're going to get six months of exclusivity on the market to be the lead and only generic, and you're probably going to be able to sell your drugs at about 80 percent of the brand-name price. And that "first to file" really became the difference between making a fortune and making a living.
On how some plants that make generics prevent FDA inspectors from doing thorough inspections
Once you understand how vital these regulators are to safety and well-being, basically any sane American is not going to want to take a pill that's coming from a plant that's uninspected.
Katherine Eban
In several instances I documented, the investigators were poisoned in the course of their inspections with tainted water from the tap, which you can't drink in India. They felt sick during inspections. I mean, this was a way of running out the clock. They were followed. In one instance, an investigator had his hotel room bugged. In some cases that I had heard about, [the plants] were trying to scan passenger lists in airports to try to determine exactly who was coming when. So there were elaborate measures that the plants took to try to protect against bad inspections.
On how the quality of generic drugs can vary depending on where the drugs are being sold
Generic-drug makers are adjusting the level of quality in their manufacturing depending on which market their drugs are going to, and depending upon the vigilance of the regulators in those markets. So they will take their biggest shortcuts, their biggest swaps of high-quality to low-quality ingredients, in markets with very poor regulation: sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, areas of South America.
On the Trump administration's efforts to ease corporate regulations
Once you understand how vital these regulators are to safety and well-being, basically any sane American is not going to want to take a pill that's coming from a plant that's uninspected. These regulators are doing absolutely vital work, and you can't go into this and come out thinking you want less regulation. I mean, it is too perilous and the costs of having, you know, nonsterile plants, non-bio-equivalent drugs — that cost is just too high.
But definitely, I think under the Trump administration you do see a more lenient attitude towards corporations generally, which, you know, has sort of trickled down to the FDA. But on the other hand, looking at the whole picture, I would have to call this a bipartisan failure that has not thought through in a systemic way how to respond to a drug supply in a globalized world.
On how much consumers should worry about the safety of generic drugs
One drug investigator said to me that he thinks the concern is higher for people on maintenance medications who are taking these drugs day in and day out. Those drugs may have toxic impurities. Those can build up in your liver, you may not know it, or you may be having side effects that you didn't think about before, and then you realize, "Wait a second I was switched to a different generic" or "I was switched from a brand to a generic."
So I think that once consumers start thinking about this as a factor ... I think they wake up to the fact that there may be consequences for them. ... You can look on the dispensing label, you'll have the name. Go into Google, put in the name of that company and "FDA warning letter." What has the FDA found out about this company? Has this company had drug recalls? It is a bit of sleuthing, but if you're taking this medication day in and day out, it's worth it.

Sometimes we are ONLY as healthy as our labels. There is a move to change the labels that confuse us. Old vitamins may be effective but not as effective when they were new. When a drug or vitamin is a critical component for a current illness then don't chance it and go with NEW. Same with foods critical in your diet. Otherwise however, for other things you should be more flexible to waste less.To Reduce Food Waste, FDA Urges 'Best If Used By' Date Labels3:13 LISTEN ondemand.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/npr/atc/2019/05/20190523_atc_to_reduce_food_waste_fda_urges_best_if_used_by_date_labels.mp3?orgId=1&topicId=1053&d=193&p=2&story=726079350&siteplayer=true&size=3096642&dl=1 May 23, 20191:00 PM ET Heard on All Things Considered Allison Aubrey - 2015 square ALLISON AUBREY
Confusion over whether food is still safe to eat after its "sell by" or "use before" date accounts for about one-fifth of food waste in U.S. homes, the FDA says. The agency is urging the food industry to adopt "best if used by" wording on packaged foods. zoranm/Getty Images
The Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to the food industry on Thursday, urging companies to get behind the initiative to standardize the use of the phrase "best if used by" on packaged food labels.
"Consumer research has shown that this phrasing helps consumers understand that the date label is about quality, not safety, and that products do not have to be discarded after the date if they are stored properly," says Frank Yiannas, a deputy commissioner at the FDA.
Yiannas says confusion over competing labels — such as "sell by" or "use before" — accounts for about 20% of food waste in Americans' homes. And this message comes at a time when Americans toss out about $161 billion worth of food each year. This equates to about one-third of all food produced in the U.S. being wasted or lost.
"Imagine going to the grocery store and buying three bags of groceries, and as you walk out, you throw one of those bags in the garbage can," Yiannas says. "It sounds ridiculous, but in essence that's what's happening every day."
Article continues after sponsor message
Leading players in the food industry support the guidance from the FDA. "We absolutely support the message the FDA is sending out today," says Meghan Stasz, vice president of sustainability and packaging at the Grocery Manufacturers Association.
In 2017, the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the Food Marketing Institute introduced a voluntary initiative to streamline the date labels on packaged foods. As we've reported, there's a similar global effort backed by the Consumer Goods Forum, a network of big players in the food industry.
Stasz says that her industry tested various date label terms with consumers. "'Best if used by' was a clear winner," she says. And she says it means exactly what it says: The product is at its peak — or freshest — if consumed before that date. "After that date on the package, [the foods] may taste a little stale, but they're still perfectly safe to consume."
Stasz says food companies that are members of the Grocery Manufacturers Association have already embraced the guidance to use "best if used by," with more than 80% of the products in the portfolios of GMA members using it. "We've seen great progress towards adoption," Stasz says.
There's no federal requirement to put date labels on food packages. The only exception is with infant formula. The FDA mandates that infant formulas be labeled with a "use by" date. The food industry uses the "use by" date in other instances when food safety is a concern. "'Use by' is basically a discard date," Stasz explains. "So, after that date on the package, the consumer [should] discard that product."
This labeling guidance applies to shelf-stable, packaged foods. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has similar recommendations for the voluntary date labels on perishable products that it regulates, such as meat, poultry and eggs.
The federal government has established a goal to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. "While we don't have a regulatory mandate [on date labels], we do have a responsibility to play a role in trying to reduce food waste, and that's why the FDA is taking this measure," Yiannas says.

Jeannine sorts through a binder of writing assignments from her therapy. In keeping a journal about her past experiences with pain, she noticed that the pain symptoms began when she was around 8 — a time of escalating family trauma at home.
Jessica Pons for NPR
Jeannine, who is 37 and lives in Burbank, Calif., has endured widespread pain since she was 8. She has been examined by dozens of doctors, but none of their X-rays, MRIs or other tests have turned up any evidence of physical injury or damage.
Over the years, desperate for relief, she tried changing her diet, wore belts to correct her posture and exercised to strengthen muscles. Taking lots of ibuprofen helped, she says, but doctors warned her that taking too much could cause gastric bleeding. Nothing else eased her discomfort. On a pain scale of 0 to 10, her pain ranged from "7 to 9, regularly," she says.
Around 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Most of us think of pain as something that arises after a physical injury, accident or damage from an illness or its treatment. But researchers are learning that, in some people, there can be another source of chronic pain.
Repeated exposure to psychological trauma, or deep anxiety or depression — especially in childhood — can leave a physical imprint on the brain that can make some people, like Jeannine, more vulnerable to chronic pain, scientists say. (We are not using her last name for reasons of privacy.)
Jeannine was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia — a condition characterized by widespread pain throughout the body, among other symptoms. The cause is unknown and likely varies from person to person.
The pain Jeannine experienced was physical. She'd feel "lightning bolts, kind of going up through my shoulders to my neck to my head," she says. Other times, she'd suddenly experience the shooting pain of sciatica in her legs, and she often suffered from a "grinding pain" in her hips. "I would feel like I can't walk anymore — it was just so very painful to walk."
Then, about eight months ago, a friend suggested something else — emotional awareness and expression therapy.
Jeannine was skeptical. She'd periodically seen a counselor in "intensive therapy" over the years, and still, her terrible pain persisted.
But EAET, she learned from her clinical psychologist, Laura Payne, is a different sort of psychotherapy. It's one of several behavioral therapies (among other interventions) included in a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services titled "Pain Management Best Practices." According to the report, published May 9, "Research indicates that EAET has a positive impact on pain intensity, pain interference, and depressive symptoms."
EAET was developed in 2011 by psychologist Mark Lumley at Wayne State University and his colleague Dr. Howard Schubiner. It combines some techniques from traditional talk therapies (such as probing a patient's life experience for insight and context) with those of cognitive behavioral therapy, which focuses more on skills training and changing harmful patterns of behavior.
It's an emotion-focused treatment, Lumley says, aimed at helping people who are in widespread, medically unexplained pain.
In a 2017 study of patients with fibromyalgia, Lumley and his colleagues found that EAET decreased widespread pain and other related symptoms for some patients. "In summary," the researchers concluded, "an intervention targeting emotional awareness and expression related to psychosocial adversity and conflict was well-received, more effective than a basic educational intervention, and had some advantages over CBT on pain."
Lumley believes the treatment might also help patients who have other sorts of pain, though that's yet to be proved.
So, how does it work?
For starters, as part of the therapy, Jeannine was asked to begin writing in a daily journal, looking into her past to identify when her problems with pain began.
"I wrote down all the different health symptoms I've had throughout my life," she says, "pain-wise, but also other things" — anything that had caused her distress.
For Jeannine, who grew up in an abusive household, there was a lot of distress, and a lot to write about. (We are not using her last name for reasons of privacy.)
"If I was dressed in a way that my dad thought was too provocative, it wasn't anything for him to call me a 'whore,' " she says, "and he'd call my mother that too."
The aggression was also physical, she says. "Lots of pushing, shoving, hitting and certainly a lot of belts in childhood."
It didn't take much therapy for Jeannine to discover something that startled her. The backaches, stomachaches, headaches and even skin problems she suffered in childhood tended to occur around the same time as the hitting and the yelling.
It was "just amazing to make that connection," she says. "I had never really stopped to think about it that way."
In facing her unresolved anger and fear through therapy, Jeannine says, she has been able to start healing. Jessica Pons for NPR
As a young adult, Jeannine moved out of the house. The abuse stopped. But her pain didn't.
Lumley says researchers are finding that this is the case for a number of patients with medically unexplained pain. He says studies have followed people prospectively over the course of years, trying to predict who develops widespread chronic pain.
"They clearly show that difficult life experiences, adverse experiences in childhood are later predictors of chronic pain — widespread pain — years later," Lumley says.
Jeannine says the idea that there could be a connection between her pain today and the trauma she suffered during childhood sounded "kind of crazy" initially.
"To me it just doesn't sound logical," she says. "You think about pain like something [that] hits you. Something hurts; it's physical. It's not like something hits you emotionally and then it hurts." But in fact, that's exactly how it can happen, researchers say.
"This is a real phenomenon," says neuroscientist Amy Arnsten, a professor of neuroscience and psychology at Yale School of Medicine. Under healthy conditions, she says, higher circuits in a part of the brain — the prefrontal cortex — can regulate whether individuals feel pain and how much pain they feel.
But these higher brain circuits can weaken and even atrophy when we're exposed to chronic stress, Arnsten says, "especially stressors where we feel uncontrolled or frightened."
Fear, depression and anxiety are the sorts of stressors that can weaken these brain circuits, she says, making people more vulnerable to feeling pain. And if those prefrontal circuits aren't working to help regulate the sensation, Arnsten says, individuals may feel prolonged pain long after a physical injury has healed.
What's more, without proper regulation, she says, the brain can generate pain when there's no physical damage. "The brain actually has pathways where it can go down and control our body," she says, "and actually create a pain response."
And that pain is very real.
The same thing can happen to adults who suffer trauma, Lumley says. But, when it starts in childhood, that sort of cycle can set in motion a lifetime of chronic pain.
"Most people don't necessarily outgrow so easily some of those difficult early-childhood experiences," he says. "Even though one's life might look good now, people still remain haunted, as memories or thoughts about family come to the fore."
And that was what was happening to Jeannine at a specific time every day during the week.
"Literally on the drive home, I would start getting pain," she says.
At first she thought it might have to do with her long commute or maybe how she was sitting. So she got better lumbar support and put "heating elements" in the car's seat.
But in therapy she realized it wasn't the car or the commute. It was going home.
"Nothing bad is meeting me here on the drive home," she says. "But when I was younger, walking home was like, 'Ahhh, I go back there again?' It was just a dreadful feeling of 'Now I have to go back to that environment.' My house never felt like a safe place for me."
After her mom passed away years ago, Jeannine retrieved aloe plants from the family home to integrate into her yard today. Confronting the feelings triggered during past family traumas has been key to healing in many ways, Jeannine says. Jessica Pons for NPR
Fear, she realized, had carried over into her relationships as an adult too, even though she's now happily married and holds a good management job in a large corporation. She had become deeply hesitant to ever express negative feelings she feared might alienate family, friends or colleagues at work.
"So I decided not to speak honestly. That was my M.O.," Jeannine says. And that would often be followed by physical pain. In her mind, in such instances, it was easier just to deal with the pain than run the risk of losing the emotional connection with people she cared about.
Today, using the tools of EAET, Jeannine says she has learned how to confront what happened to her as a child and begin the process of healing as an adult. She has learned to be more honest with herself and others about what she really thinks and what she wants.
Lumley says EAET helps some patients look beneath the shame, fear and guilt they may be feeling now to emotions they experienced during the abuse but long suppressed — anger, sadness or distress over the loss of love.
Jeannine placed her children's school art projects next to a small board with the quote "Home is wherever I'm with you" as a reminder that her current home is different from the home she grew up in. Jessica Pons for NPR
Patients have to face their fears head-on, Lumley says.
"Part of facing it means talking about it, giving it some expression with your words and your face and your body."
"The insight and perspective we get from therapy can help us feel more in control," neuroscientist Arnsten says, "and that can put higher brain circuits back online and allow them to regulate our pain pathways, just as they would in a healthy brain."
Payne, Jeannine's therapist, says Jeannine's journey to health wasn't easy. "It got very tough and the pain got a lot worse, and it became more persistent."
But Jeannine persevered and worked with Payne to complete all the written exercises and discussions that were part of the treatment.
Just months after beginning therapy, Jeannine began to engage in conversations she had long avoided — being more honest about her feelings with colleagues and her family. "It was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life," she says.
Now, this is a relatively new therapy, and so far the published evidence of its effectiveness is largely based on one study. More research, with larger studies, is needed to truly gauge its worth.
There are now some days, Jeannine says, when she's not in pain at all. Jessica Pons for NPR
But Jeannine says the therapy worked for her. Today, she doesn't avoid situations, people or potential confrontations. She's relieved. And happy. And her pain, she says, is way down. On some days, she has no pain at all.

Can we eat to starve cancer? | William LiTED Published on May 17, 2010 www.ted.com William Li presents a new way to think about cancer treatment: angiogenesis, targeting the blood vessels that feed a tumor. The crucial first (and best) step: Eating cancer-fighting foods that beat cancer at its own game.Top 10 Anti-Angiogenic Foodsangio.org/learn/angiogenesis/Angiogenesis How is Angiogenesis Important for Health? Angiogenesis, the growth of new capillary blood vessels in the body, is an important natural process used for healing and reproduction. The body controls angiogenesis by producing a precise balance of growth and inhibitory factors in healthy tissues.
When this balance is disturbed, the result is either too much or too little angiogenesis. Abnormal blood vessel growth, either excessive or insufficient, is now recognized as a “common denominator” underlying many deadly and debilitating conditions, including cancer, skin diseases, age-related blindness, diabetic ulcers, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and many others. The list of diseases that have angiogenesis as an underlying mechanism grows longer every year.
What is Angiogenesis-Based Medicine? Angiogenesis-Based Medicine — restoring the body’s natural control of angiogenesis — is a wide-ranging approach to fighting disease. By using new medical treatments that either inhibit or stimulate angiogenesis, doctors are prolonging the lives of cancer patients, preventing limb amputations, reversing vision loss, and improving general health.
For example, cancerous tumors release angiogenic growth factor proteins that stimulate blood vessels to grow into the tumor, providing it with oxygen and nutrients. A key mechanism of antiangiogenic therapy interferes with the process of blood vessel growth to literally starve the tumor of its blood supply. A new class of cancer treatments that block angiogenesis are now approved and available to treat cancers of the colon, kidney, lung, breast, liver, brain, ovaries, and thyroid, as well as multiple myeloma, bone gastrointestinal stromal tumors, soft tissue sarcoma, and SEGA tumors. Some older drugs have been rediscovered to block angiogenesis, as well. These are being used to treat angiogenesis-dependent conditions, such as hemangiomas, colon polyps, and precancerous skin lesions.
Therapeutic angiogenesis, in contrast, stimulates angiogenesis where it is required but is lacking. This technique is used to replenish the blood supply to chronic wounds to speed healing, and it prevents unnecessary amputations. New research suggests this approach can also be used to save limbs afflicted with poor circulation, and even oxygen-starved hearts. Therapeutic angiogenesis may even help to regenerate damaged or lost tissues in ways that were previously considered impossible, such as with nerves and brain tissue.

ALERTJUNE 24, 2019Commonly prescribed drugs could increase the risk of dementia, says a new studyby University of Nottingham
The study, carried out by experts from the University of Nottingham and funded by the NIHR School for Primary Care Research, found that there was nearly a 50% increased risk of dementia among patients aged 55 and over who had used strong anticholinergic medication daily for three years or more.
Anticholinergic drugs help to contract and relax muscles. They work by blocking acetylcholine, a chemical that transmits messages in the nervous system.
Doctors prescribe the drugs to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bladder conditions, allergies, gastrointestinal disorders and symptoms of Parkinson's disease. These medicines can have short-term side effects, including confusion and memory loss, but it is less certain whether long-term use increases the risk of dementia.
The research, published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal and led by Professor Carol Coupland from the University's Division of Primary Care, looked at the medical records of 58,769 patients with a diagnosis of dementia and 225,574 patients without a diagnosis of dementia, all aged 55 and over and registered with UK GPs contributing data to the QResearch database, between 1 January 2004 and 31 January 2016.
The study findings showed increased risks of dementia for anticholinergic drugs overall and specifically for the anticholinergic antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs, antiparkinsons drugs, bladder drugs and epilepsy drugs after accounting for other risk factors for dementia.
No increased risks were found for the other types of anticholinergic drug studied such as antihistamines and gastrointestinal drugs.
Professor Tom Dening, Head of the Centre for Dementia at the University of Nottingham and a member of the research study team, said: "This study provides further evidence that doctors should be careful when prescribing certain drugs that have anticholinergic properties. However, it's important that patients taking medications of this kind don't just stop them abruptly as this may be much more harmful. If patients have concerns, then they should discuss them with their doctor to consider the pros and cons of the treatment they are receiving."
The 58,769 patients with dementia had an average age of 82 and 63% were women. Each dementia case was matched to five control patients of the same age, sex, and general practice.
Anticholinergic drug exposure was assessed using prescription information over a complete period of 10 years from 1 to 11 years before diagnosis of dementia or the equivalent dates in control patients, and was compared between the two patient groups. Further analysis looked at prescriptions for anticholinergic drugs up to 20 years before diagnosis of dementia.
This is an observational study so no firm conclusions can be drawn about whether these anticholinergic drugs cause dementia, and it is possible that the drugs were being prescribed for very early symptoms of dementia.
Professor Coupland said: "Our study adds further evidence of the potential risks associated with strong anticholinergic drugs, particularly antidepressants, bladder antimuscarinic drugs, anti-Parkinson drugs and epilepsy drugs.
"The risks of this type of medication should be carefully considered by healthcare professionals alongside the benefits when the drugs are prescribed and alternative treatments should be considered where possible, such as other types of antidepressants or alternative types of treatment for bladder conditions. These findings also highlight the importance of carrying out regular medication reviews.
"We found a greater risk for people diagnosed with dementia before the age of 80 which indicates that anticholinergic drugs should be prescribed with caution in middle-aged people as well as in older people."
These results, along with those of a similar study published in 2018 help to clarify which types of anticholinergic drug are associated with the highest risks of dementia.
In the 1-11 years before the dementia diagnosis date or equivalent in controls, nearly 57% of cases and 51% of controls were prescribed at least one strong anticholinergic drug, with an average of six prescriptions in cases and 4 in controls. The most frequently-prescribed types of drugs were antidepressants, anti-vertigo and bladder antimuscarinic drugs—which are used to treat an overactive bladder.
The increased risk associated with these drugs indicates that if the association is causal around 10% of dementia diagnoses could be attributable to anticholinergicdrug exposure, which would equate to around 20,000 of the 209,600 new cases of dementia per year in the UK.
This is a sizeable proportion and is comparable with other modifiable risk factors for dementia, including 5% for midlife hypertension, 3% for diabetes, 14% for later life smoking and 6.5% for physical inactivity.

8 herbs and supplements for depressionLast updated Tue 26 February 2019 By Nicole Galan Reviewed by Debra Rose Wilson, PhD, MSN, RN, IBCLC, AHN-BC, CHT
Depression is a serious mood disorder with symptoms that range from mild to debilitating and potentially life-threatening. Some people look to manage depression with herbal remedies, rather than with medication a doctor prescribes. The most recent data from the National Institute of Mental Health suggest that in the United States, 6.7 percent of people experienced a major depressive episode in 2016.
Medications and counseling are conventional ways to alleviate the symptoms of depression. However, some herbs and supplements may also help.
In this article, we look at the common herbs and supplements with links to the treatment of depression and discuss their safety and effectiveness.
Some herbs, essential oils, and supplements have shown promising effects for people with depression. The use of complementary therapies continues to gain popularity, as people look for more natural methods of managing their health.
However, herbal does not always mean safe or effective, and knowing which products to choose can save a lot of time and money.
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not monitor herbs in the same way as food and drugs. As a result, manufacturers are not always 100 percent clear about the quality or purity of their product.
Research suggests promise for some supplements in treating mild-to-moderate depression. These are some of the supplements that people most widely use:

I can't vouch for this product but the science is sound.Fig 1. Microcosm diagram of the mind by Robert Fludd. This Little-Known Brain Chemical is the Reason Why Your Memory Is Losing Its EdgeJune 23, 2019
It all started with minor slips you easily dismissed as "senior moments." You forgot your keys. You called someone by the wrong name. The word you were looking for was on the tip of your tongue, but you couldn't quite grasp it. You don't feel any older, but you do feel yourself changing. Researchers agree this could be a sign of something more serious.
A study published in the British Medical Journal of January 2012 has concluded that age-related cognitive decline begins much earlier than expected: by our mid-40s. Even more distressing, this decline can progress at very unpredictable rates. Scientists have identified that acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter, is responsible for forming new connections and strengthening neural pathways in the brain. In other words, it keeps your mind sharp. However, persistently low levels of this key neurotransmitter places you at risk. Without healthy levels of acetylcholine, the brain can physically shrink; at which point, the damage can be very difficult to repair.
And yet, we all know people of advanced age who seem immune to this cognitive decline. These so-called superagers retain high mental acuity well into their later years. Scientists have determined that superagers minds' function with high levels of acetylcholine. Therefore, their minds have stronger and more numerous neural connections. This creates the ideal environment for a steel-trap memory. Unfortunately, for most of us, levels of acetylcholine decrease as we age and rapidly so after age 45.
But it's not just our age that is to blame. Like a muscle, your brain needs constant exercise to stay in shape. Modern society deprives us of essential mental exercise.
Before the written word became accessible and affordable, oral history was the only way to spread culture to younger generations. As a result, a strong memory was an essential part of everyday life. For example, ancient Greek poets would memorize and recite entire epic poems that were thousands of lines long. Because of the demands society placed on their brains, these individuals engaged in rigorous daily mental exercise. They did not have telephones, TVs, and computers distracting their attention and distorting the ways in which their brains processed information. This kind of singular focus required optimal levels of acetylcholine.
Fig 2. A network of neural connections in the brain.
Modern technology denies crucial exercise to certain areas of our brains in two important ways, causing it to atrophy over time. We are exposed to numerous sources of stimulation which constantly disrupt our production of acetylcholine. Likewise, we no longer need to remember phone numbers, addresses, dates, or even basic navigation because our phones have replaced our memories. Both of these factors train your mind to forget and place you at risk for earlier onset of cognitive decline.
In good news, new research says you don't need to throw away your smartphone, cancel your Netflix subscription, or quit your job to turn back the clock on age-related cognitive decline. A team of researchers in a GMP-certified laboratory in New York has identified 5 compounds that can naturally restore optimal levels of acetylcholine. They are Alpha GPC, Huperzine A, Bacopa Monnieri, Lion's Mane Mushroom, and Ginkgo Biloba. Better yet, clinically-backed by scientific research, these natural compounds do not contain exotic, unproven chemicals derived from marine life.
Over the last 18 months, this research team has combined these 5 safe and powerful natural compounds to boost levels of acetylcholine into one formula. It's called RediMind, and here's how it works.*
RediMind restores optimal levels of acetylcholine, protects you from age-related cognitive decline, and strengthens neural connections in the brain. The result? You can process and store information more easily and recall it much more quickly. RediMind gives you back the steel-trap memory of a confident mind.
To test the product's effectiveness, Princeton Consumer Research performed a placebo-controlled clinical trial in which the International Shopping List test was administered at different intervals at baseline, after 2 weeks, and after 30 days. The ISLT is a standardized short-term memory test consisting of a list of random grocery items which must be memorized and reproduced within a limited time frame.

not just for cancerPOLY MVAMore than 50 years ago, medical therapeutic approaches focused on metabolism. With the advent of genetics, a shift toward genomics occurred that has dominated the landscape of modern medicine. This gave us vast insight into the study of medicine and the human genome, however, it has not produced the answers or solutions that we had hoped for. Metabolism or better phrased, metabolic medicine, is now being revisited and showing considerable promise for our health. One approach is to target the process of cellular energy — this is metabolic and cellular power.
In a simple explanation, Poly-MVA is exactly what its name says. Poly meaning multiple, the MVA meaning Minerals, Vitamins, and Amino acids. This combination of a Lipoic Acid Complex with specific co-factors of minerals, vitamins, and amino acids targets, supports, maintains and improves the integrity of our mitochondria (the powerhouses of our cells) and can rescue our cells from damage. As a metabolic agent, it’s going to protect, correct, enhance our metabolic power to keep all cells healthy and support the body’s natural mechanisms against abnormal environments and poor health.
Lipoic Acid Mineral Complex (the unique LAMC complex inside of Poly-MVA) is what is called a redox molecule that facilitates energy charge transfer at the cellular level not only to protect and repair our DNA but more importantly to our Mitochondria, the power plant of the majority of our cells and the energy source for all cellular activity. (In basic scientific terms, a redox molecule means that it can accept an electrical charge and then donate that charge, which makes it an extremely effective cellular energy-transferring molecule.)
The power of LAMC is that it can effectively protect cells and then safely provide energy to them. Many years of research and clinical studies provide consistent and ongoing evidence that Poly-MVA can support gene repair (in genes damaged by disease and or radiation), support multiple therapies and cellular degeneration because of its mitochondrial up-regulation with an increase of oxygen.
Once inside our cells, Poly-MVA supports and increases energy production (ATP) via the Krebs cycle, its enzymes, and its normal oxygen pathways. This normal energy pathway gives all our cells a boost and increases cellular mitochondrial function while at the same time disrupting dysfunctional metabolism, particularly the metabolism of the (anaerobic) cancer cell that does not have the proper oxygen pathways. They are using glycolysis and non-oxygen pathways to create energy for survival and replication.
Quick Facts LAMC/Poly-MVA is a unique compound created through an innovative process whereby the mineral palladium is bound to alpha lipoic acid and Vitamin B1 (thiamine). When alpha lipoic acid, a unique and powerful antioxidant with multiple health benefits, is connected to an electrically charged mineral (palladium) and joined with thiamin (B1), the resulting complex is both water and fat soluble, dramatically increasing the entire body's absorption of Poly-MVA at the cellular level. With Vitamins B1, B2 and B12, specific trace minerals and amino acids, this unique complex and formulation create an amazing synergy, action, and function. It is designed to provide energy for the body's systems as well as protect cells from oxidation through its proprietary and patented formulation. Poly-MVA was formulated by Dr. Merrill Garnett, who has conducted research on the actions of DNA within normal and abnormal cells. Multiple studies have shown Poly-MVA's effectiveness in many different cell lines, with cellular support occurring in normal cells. The benefit from the increase in oxygen and ATP is support for normal cellular function in other cells. The alpha lipoic acid, B-1, and mineral are irreversibly bound together, resulting in a molecule that is both fat and water soluble (so it travels to all parts of the body) and significantly more effective than any individual ingredient. Poly-MVA has undergone extensive use and testing both orally and intravenously IV in various support roles of cancer, other degenerative diseases and as a daily preventative tonic, with a safety record of almost 20 years. Furthermore, Poly-MVA is a highly-effective free radical scavenger, yet it is more than that. Its ability to donate electrons to the mitochondria of the cell is critical to its benefits. In addition to cancer support, clinical research also continues to support its benefits in various applications including neurological support, support, stroke, TBI (traumatic brain injury), ischemia, hypertension, fatigue, and cardiovascular applications. This is because; following an interruption of blood flow to any tissue, there is a deprivation of oxygen and glucose. Providing an alternative energy source can maintain the integrity of the electron transport chain within the mitochondria and provide significant support for survival, repair, and regeneration. The LAMC complex and its ability to shuttle electrons to not only support and protect oxidized DNA while also going to the mitochondria (this is critical since mitochondrial health is a major concern during myocardial and neurological support, as well as in countless other health concerns were mitochondrial dysfunction plays a role). This product safely and effectively protects and supports cellular function. It is designed to provide energy for the compromised body systems by increasing cellular energy levels, thus increasing the charge density of DNA within the cell. This supports and increases normal cell function and works against cellular dysfunction. Cancer Tutor wanted to better understand, so we could share this information with our readers and we sat down with Al Sanchez, CEO of AMARC Enterprises and a member of the Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Research, to discuss all the buzz and benefits of Poly-MVA in the stand against cancer, degenerative disease, and better patient outcomes all around.

Q: What is Poly-MVA?
Sanchez: Poly-MVA, its name is representative of what it is. Poly meaning multiple and the MVA standing for minerals, vitamins and amino acids. In the liquid solution that is Poly-MVA, you have multiple ingredients and a very unique complex, Lipoic Acid Mineral Complex (LAMC). Many think that POLY-MVA is just a mixture of certain ingredients. It is very different than just taking alpha lipoic acid and B-vitamins, for example. Taking ALA is great. Taking thiamine is great, taking B-2 and B-12 is great and fine. Even taking them together in a combination pill or mixture is great. However, taking them in Poly-MVA is vastly different. They go in as LAMC complex and they come out as that complex. They work in the body as this complex and unique bound molecule of lipoic acid and thiamin. They work at the mitochondria; the whole metabolic approach is enhanced because of this focus and target on metabolism. They can protect the cell on one side and support the cell energetically on the other side. It can protect and support at the same time because of the LAMC complex and is what is called a redox molecule, not because it's an individual ingredient.
Most supplements out there, as a matter of fact, I think almost all supplements out there, are at some level simply a mixture of ingredients or a concentration/combination of them. Let's say we're going to make a cake? You take all of the ingredients and you mix them up accordingly. The cake batter tastes really good and it tastes kind of similar to what the cake or final dessert is going to taste like when it comes out of the oven but it's not going to be exactly the same. Now all those ingredients are going to be in there once it's baked but now they're actually going to form new bonds, new connections and make something that didn't exist prior to it going in the oven. They have become complexed. All the other supplements out there are mixtures and concentrations of various ingredients; just like the batter we talked about, this is what really differentiates Poly-MVA from pretty much everything else out there. It is the cake; it is not the batter.

Why do couch potatoes live longer than athletes? Dr Joel Wallach
I went to lunch with my "Ninja" friend (he's a martial arts instructor & into holistic healing) and our discussion drifted from topic to topic as it tends to when I brought up ORMUS ( www.subtleenergies.com/ormus/ormus/ormus.htm ) and its potential benifits.
He then gave me a brief synopsis of this man Dr Joel Wallach & I was facinated.
Dr Wallach started working with animals where high birth rates of cattle are desired for money reasons (unlike our medical industry where high death / disease rates are desirable for profits).
Dr Wallach has found (through the most exhaustive work I've ever heard of) that all disease is linked to malnutrition & longevity is the same.
Here is an example of his work:
Quote Why do couch potatoes live longer than athletes?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you ever heard about professional athletes dropping dead on the field? According to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, 100,000 youngsters, as well as pros die each year from cardio-vascular disorders as a result of sports -THIS IS TWICE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT DIE ON THE NATIONS HIGHWAYS! 45,000 of the 100,000 play basketball, not boxing or football. In hard exercise, people sweat out many of their vital minerals - not just sodium and potassium. Rigorous exertion without replacing lost minerals can be fatal. There are sports drinks that are supposed to replace nutrients lost during exertion, these would work fine if they had more than sugar, salt and potassium, and food coloring.
Dr. Wallach has a unique hobby, collecting MD obituaries. Here is one case: A recent favorite of mine is Dr. W.T.N., 48, captain of the 'Dream Team' of cardiologists who cared for the late Reggie Lewis, 27, captain of the Boston Celtics. (Reggie Lewis died of a cardio-myopathy heart attack." A simple computer search at the library would have turned up the large-scale study showing the only known reason for cardiomyopathy to be a simple selenium deficiency.) THE TROUBLE WITH MODERN MEDICINE IS THAT THE PROFESSION IS SLOW TO APPLY THEIR OWN RESEARCH. Guess who pays the price of ignorance?
Dr. W.T.N. taught at Harvard, was cardiac expert for NBA, and finished the Boston Marathon three times. You guessed it- he died one and a half years after Reggie from the same type of heart attack. Dr. W.T.N. forgot that the human body needs something more than drugs, pacemakers and surgery. They both died from mineral deficiencies.
Why are athletes dropping dead at early ages? Why are they not faring as well compared to couch potato's? That's because athlete's sweat more in 5 years than couch potato's do in 75 years. And when you sweat your not just sweating out water or Gatorade, your sweating out a soup that contains all 60 essential minerals and they are called essential minerals because if any of them are missing for any length of time, you get some horrible degenerative disease, many of which are life threatening. So this is a no brainer folks...
Who is more likely to die of a life threatening mineral deficiency disease, an athlete sweating out quarts and quarts of this mineral rich soup everyday or a couch potato in an air conditioned den, laying on the couch belching and flipping through the channels?
Now the bottom line message here is this, you don't need to be an athlete to sweat, you can be in the military doing your training. You could be a roofer, a carpenter, an electrician, a plumber, a carpet layer, you can be a farmer, you could be a dance instructor, you could work in a bakery, you could work in an air conditioned insurance agency where its so cold like it is in here you could hang meat in there you know, never sweat at your work place, an then you know your being inactive so you join a health club, where you go sweat 3 nights a week. Unless your replacing the minerals your sweating out, your not going to make it to 100. Your going to be sick and miserable the last 12 to 15 years of your life. Exercise without supplementation is suicide. Exercise without supplementation is a negative, not a positive. Just like running your car without oil.
The next medical dogma or lie were going to look at has to do with this salt thing. Believe it or not how many of you have ever heard that using the salt shaker is going to increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, you got to be dead in America not to have heard that one. What's the first thing a farmer puts out to live stock? Salt block isn't it. There's nobody out in the pasture telling a cow she is limited to one lick a day is there. And I refuse to believe that my human patients are dumber than a cow. So I say go ahead and pick up a salt shaker and lightning won't strike you, salt your food with impunity, you can salt your body, nothing bad is going to happen. Go ahead and do it. 98% of my patients love it, they bring me hundreds of new patients every month who want to use salt and not feel guilty about it. And the 2%, the bean counters, they say Wallach we love and respect you, but we have this high priced cardiologist who says your flying in the face of all the weighted medical evidence. You can't tell people they can use salt, they are going to get hypertension and heart disease and stroke.
Well I have been redeemed on my view on salt. This came out in 1997. This was presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association, not the National Inquirer, this was in Portland Oregon. Doctors lack proof that to much salt is unhealthful. After years of telling people, healthy people that too much salt isn't good for them, researchers still don't have solid evidence to back up that claim. Now what do doctors call people who give unsubstantiated health or medical advice for a profit? Call them quacks don't they, absolutely. So if you have a doctor and I don't care if they are an Orthodox doctor or an alternative doctor, if they say to cut back on salt, you say doc, you're a quack. Your giving me unsubstantiated health and medical advice for a profit. There's not a single study, not a single study, which shows that restricting salt will reduce your risk of high blood pressure.
"Dr. Wallach"
He is also an author:
"Dead Doctors Don't Lie".
Quote The Title "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" was created by Dr. Joel Wallach after years of research on the subject of health and longevity. Dr. Wallach discovered that the life span of the average doctor in America is several years shorter than that of the average couch potato. Dr. Wallach began collecting obituaries of doctors only to find that many were dying of simple nutritional deficiencies. If doctors really knew the truth about health and longevity they should be living longer than anyone else, not dying sooner. This premature death pattern proves that doctors are missing some key elements when it comes to understanding what it takes to live a longer healthier life, hence was born the title... "Dead Doctors Don't Lie".

What a great idea!! I wonder if Medicare would cover her services? www.holistichelp.net/counseling.html Get Empowered to Live Your Best Life Possible with Cynthia Perkins, M.Ed. and her Integrative Holistic Health Coaching
"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene
As your integrative holistic health coach, we will work together to optimize your physical, emotional/mental, and spiritual health by identifying the potential underlying causes of your symptoms, individualizing your diet, helping you to be thoroughly informed, and creating a strong self-care plan that empowers you to take control of your own healing journey and move forward with strength and confidence.
At the core of my approach is the belief that the foundation for healing is built first and foremost with a diet and lifestyle that encourages health. This means that the food we eat and the way we live should be aligned with Paleo/Primal principles at the base, the way nature intended us to eat and live. While at the same time, recognizing that we are all unique biochemically and the need for individualization.
Your dietary and lifestyle needs will be affected by whatever health condition you may be addressing or the goal you are trying to achieve, and therefore, need to be personalized to address these issues.
Get customized dietary and lifestyle suggestions Individualize your Paleo/Primal diet for your personal biochemical needs Identify foods that may be contributing to your symptoms or conditions Overcome cravings for sugar and carbs During a session with me you can expect to attempt to identify possible underlying contributors of your symptoms, clarify goals, develop a plan of action, get headed in the right direction, receive customized dietary guidelines and lifestyle approaches, troubleshoot roadblocks, a nutritional supplement assessment, supplemental reading material, and lab testing suggestions if desired.
Identify root causes of symptoms Clarify your goals Design a plan of action and strong self-care plan Troubleshoot obstacles From there, we strengthen the foundation with other holistic practices like mindfulness and breathwork and we may use functional medicine lab testing to go deeper or explore other avenues. We will investigate potential issues like microbial overgrowth, neurotransmitter imbalances, sympathetic nervous system activity, environmental toxicity, nutritional imbalances, and more.
Also at the heart of my philosophy is the belief that healing is a life-long journey, not a one-time event. It requires a passionate commitment and dedication to the goal. Sometimes, not all conditions, syndromes, illnesses, or diseases can be completely "healed", but they can, at the very least, be significantly improved and managed with the right interventions.
Being healthy or achieving optimal health is not always defined by the "absence" of disease or illness. It may also mean living and functioning as optimally as possible with your condition. Finding harmony and balance in the midst of the storm, while continuing to strive for a more optimal level of health.
Move toward a higher level of health with strength and confidence Improve your quality of life Reduce feelings of fear, helplessness, hopelessness, and loss of control Take control of your healing journey Last but not least, I hold a firm opinion that responsibility for your health lies in your hands, not your practitioners. My goal is to help you take the reigns and lead the way. Empowerment is found by being as informed as possible about your conditions, the challenges that exist, and the options available to you.
Cynthia's Holistic Health Coaching is Short-term and Goal focused I can provide you with everything you need to begin moving toward a higher level of health and living your best life possible in one or two sessions, depending on how deep you want to go and the extent of support you would like. I'm not going to lock you into months of unnecessary coaching.
When I come into the initial consult with you, I have already reviewed your intake forms, taken notes for a plan of action, and I'm ready to dive immediately into presenting you with an empowering self-care plan designed specifically for your needs. When you leave the session, you can put these steps into action instantly and begin your journey towards better health.
However, you can benefit greatly from additional sessions by working on a particular issue, concern, technique, remedy, etc, in more depth or for accountability and support. So, I am always here for ongoing consultations if you need or desire to go deeper.
Cynthia's Areas of Expertise I hold a bachelor's degree in psychology, a master's degree of education in mental health counseling, a certificate of completion in functional medicine, and a certificate of completion in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction as taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn) and I'm the author of more than ten self-help books.
Furthermore, I have overcome many challenges in my own life like fibromyalgia, disabling anxiety attacks, clinical depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, sugar and carb addiction, and compulsive overeating. So, my expertise comes to you on both a professional and personal level. Additionally, I have been walking the walk of what I teach for more than 30 years.
My integrative holistic health coaching or counseling has helped thousands of people with chronic health conditions of many different kinds to successfully improve the quality of their lives and move toward a higher level of health.

now I've heard everythingASMR and 'head orgasms': what's the science behind it?Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response is the technical term for what some call ‘head orgasms’, or ‘brain tingles’. But what does the research say about it? www.theguardian.com/science/head-quarters/2016/jan/08/asmr-and-head-orgasms-whats-the-science-behind-it www.theguardian.com/music/2015/nov/03/sound-artist-claire-tolan-asmr Pete Etchells

The ASMR videos that give YouTube viewers 'head orgasms' (binaural sound) | Guardian Docs
ASMR videos often involve whispers, role play and slow movements. Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or ASMR, is a curious phenomenon. Those who experience it often characterise it as a tingling sensation in the back of the head or neck, or another part of the body, in response to some sort of sensory stimulus. That stimulus could be anything, but over the past few years, a subculture has developed around YouTube videos, and their growing popularity was the focus of a video posted on the Guardian this last week. It’s well worth a watch, but I couldn’t help but feel it would have been a bit more interesting if there had been some scientific background in it. The trouble is, there isn’t actually much research on ASMR out there.
To date, only one research paper has been published on the phenomenon. peerj.com/articles/851.pdf
In March last year, Emma Barratt, a graduate student at Swansea University, and Dr Nick Davis, then a lecturer at the same institution, published the results of a survey of some 500 ASMR enthusiasts. “ASMR is interesting to me as a psychologist because it’s a bit ‘weird’” says Davis, now at Manchester Metropolitan University. “The sensations people describe are quite hard to describe, and that’s odd because people are usually quite good at describing bodily sensation. So we wanted to know if everybody’s ASMR experience is the same, and of people tend to be triggered by the same sorts of things.”
The ASMR videos that give YouTube viewers ‘head orgasms’ The study asked a range of questions about where, when and why people watch ASMR videos, whether there was any consistency in ASMR-triggering content, as well as whether individuals felt it had any effect on their mood. There was a remarkable consistency across participants in terms of triggering content – whispering worked for the majority of people, followed by videos involving some sort of personal attention, crisp sounds, and slow movements. For the most part, participants reported that they watched ASMR videos for relaxation purposes, or to help them sleep or deal with stress. Only 5% of participants reported that they used ASMR media for sexual stimulation, which is counter to a common perception of the videos found online. “There are a lot of people who latch onto some ASMR videos involving attractive women and dismiss what we found to be a very nuanced activity as exclusively sexual. Our findings will hopefully dispel that idea,” explains Barratt. “The fact that a huge number of people are triggered by whispering voices suggests that the sensation is related to being intimate with someone in a non-sexual way. Very few people reported a sexual motivation for ASMR, it really is about feeling relaxed or vulnerable with another person,” adds Davis.
But given its popularity, why has the psychological research community neglected the sensation until now? There could be lots of reasons. For one, it’s an inherently personal, private experience, and perhaps one that hasn’t traditionally lent itself to cropping up in conversation all that often. That, coupled with the fact that it’s a difficult sensation to explain to someone who doesn’t experience it, may go some way to explaining why there wasn’t even a term to describe it until 2010. “Before the online community existed, I’ve heard many people who experience ASMR say they thought they were the only ones that experienced it,” says Barratt. “I think the lack of evidence that ASMR was experienced by such a huge group of people may be why it was overlooked, or written off as an oddly described version of frisson (‘goosebumps’), in the past,” she adds.
Barratt and Davis don’t see their study as a complete story; rather, it’s a foot in the door for researchers interested in studying the phenomenon. “We hope our work will provide a platform for more sophisticated work in the future, but we saw it as a starting point,” explains Davis. The next step, ideally, is to start trying to pin down the physiological basis of the sensation.
I spoke to Dr Emma Blakey, Giulia Poerio, Tom Hostler and Theresa Veltri, who as graduate students at the University of Sheffield, are part of the new generation of ASMR researchers trying to do just that. They’re currently working on a study that will aim to see whether people who subjectively report the experience of ASMR also produce consistent physiological measures – for example, changes in heart rate, breathing rate, or skin conductance.
“One of our main aims is to try to draw attention to ASMR as a topic worthy (and capable) of scientific research, in the hope that it might galvanise future research efforts,” they explain. Of the group, three of them (Emma, Giulia and Tom) experience ASMR, whereas Theresa doesn’t. The study is still in an early stage – data collection has just finished – but this diversity in experience, they believe, is a critical component to their research. “So we starting thinking about how we might first and foremost investigate this phenomenon at the most basic level: what might it take to convince someone who doesn’t experience ASMR that it is a genuine and consistent experience for some people?” they explain. “Theresa doesn’t experience ASMR, and has valuable scepticism of the experience. It adds to the diversity of our research group and the questioning of our approach from a non-ASMR perspective,” they add.
ASMR: the new sensation that’s (literally) making people tingle
Given that ASMR is open to misunderstanding and misconceptions, a healthy dose of scepticism is important for future research in the area. Anecdotally, the Sheffield group point out that some ASMR enthusiasts use the videos therapeutically, to help with symptoms of insomnia, anxiety or depression. This is echoed in the findings from Barratt and Davis’s survey; their data showed that, for people who scored as having moderate to severe depression, 69% reported using ASMR videos to help ease their symptoms, and generally reported a greater improvement in mood than individuals who were not depressed. But these are self-report measures, and further work needs to be done to pinpoint to what extent there may be an actual therapeutic effect.
“There needs to be a careful balance between skepticism and open-mindedness when investigating ASMR,” the Sheffield group say. “There is also of course the danger that ASMR videos get picked up by people who might try and use them to market pseudoscience or mental health benefits (without the evidence to support it), and inadvertently spread misinformation about it, which would of course damage the reputation of any genuine research going on,” they add. We’ve already started to see cases of this – just this week, in an interview with the Daily Mail, ASMR video producer Lauren Ostrowksi Fenton claimed that the sensation is produced by oxytocin, which she refers to as “the cuddle hormone, the hugging hormone, or the feel-good hormone”. Besides the fact that there’s simply no evidence that oxytocin is responsible for the sensation, the science behind the claim that oxytocin is a “hug hormone” is itself extremely weak.
But for the most part, the people running actual research studies on ASMR are optimistic about the future. And it bodes well that the first paper published on the sensation adhered to the principles of open science. “Psychology is going through a period of change, where we are looking at how good our methods are, and how reliable and reproducible our findings are,” Davis points out. “I don’t see research in this area as any different from other fields of psychology. We were very keen to be very open about our work, and we uploaded our complete data set so anyone can check our results, or find new things that we hadn’t considered. This sort of openness doesn’t solve every problem in psychology, but we thought it was a good start.”

Allergic to dairy? Eggs? Fear not.Dairy Ice Cream, No Cow Needed: These Egg And Milk Proteins Are Made Without Animals4:17 LISTEN ondemand.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/npr/atc/2019/08/20190802_atc_i_scream_you_scream_we_all_scream_for_lab-grown_animal_proteins.mp3?orgId=1&topicId=1053&d=257&p=2&story=747026144&siteplayer=true&size=4103697&dl=1August 2, 20192:08 PM ET Heard on All Things Considered Maria Godoy at NPR headquarters in Washington, D.C., May 22, 2018. (photo by Allison Shelley) (Square) Two scoops of Perfect Day's vegan ice cream, made with synthetic whey proteins. Protein from whey, a byproduct of cheese-making, is often used to give frozen desserts a creamy texture. Perfect Day makes its whey proteins using microbes. Olivia Falcigno/NPR Earlier today, I ate a scoop of chocolate ice cream – creamy and pleasantly fatty feeling in my mouth. This would hardly seem newsworthy, except for the high-tech ingredient that made my frozen treat go down so smoothly: dairy proteins produced in a lab, no cows needed. The realm of plant-based meat substitutes has gotten a lot of buzz lately. Think the Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat – companies that use biochemistry to mimic the taste and texture of meat using plant-based ingredients. There's another frontier along these lines – start-ups that use microbes to create egg, dairy and other animal proteins without the animals. Their pitch: Sustainability. Livestock agriculture uses lots of water and land resources, and produces significant amounts of greenhouse gases. "If you can produce just the proteins that you want without keeping a living animal alive, that's going to be a lot more efficient, so it's better for the environment," says Bruce Friedrich of the Good Food Institute, which promotes plant- and cell-based alternatives to animal protein. And he says as the technology scales up, it should be a lot cheaper to produce proteins this way, too. Among the early entrants in this field is Perfect Day, producer of the aforementioned ice cream. The company took the genetic code for the main proteins in whey, a byproduct of cheese-making, then had it artificially synthesized into a molecule of DNA – so the process is "totally animal free," says Perfect Day co-founder Ryan Pandya. Then they genetically engineered microbes to produce the same proteins through fermentation. Sign Up For The NPR Daily Newsletter Catch up on the latest headlines and unique NPR stories, sent every weekday. E-mail address What's your email? By subscribing, you agree to NPR's terms of use and privacy policy. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. "Just like cows eat plants and make milk, it turns out [micro]flora can eat plants and make milk. And that's all we've done," Pandya says. "The process is really simple," he says. You take a tank of microbes, feed them, and they turn into milk protein. "Then you separated it out with filtration and drying and you're done." Why focus on whey? In frozen desserts, whey protein provides velvety texture – Perfect Day released its ice cream in a limited run of about 1,000 3-pint boxes as a sort of proof of concept to introduce consumers to its technology. (Bonus: It's also lactose free.) But the company's goal is actually to become an ingredient supplier to all the food companies that rely on whey to boost protein levels in a range of foods, from smoothies to power bars. The target audience goes beyond vegans — to everyone. "Rather than try to compete with all these big food makers that are otherwise just going to buy a ton of whey protein from factory-farmed cows, we can actually give them a better supply chain and in so doing, we can have a lot more impact than we would on our own," Pandya says. Other companies looking to shake up the food supply include Motif Ingredients, which launched earlier this year with $90 million in investor financing. It aims to produce proteins derived from dairy, egg and meat using microbial fermentation and supply them to food makers looking for alternatives to animal proteins. Clara Foods is using a similar synthetic biology process to create egg white proteins, including a highly soluble protein that would be used in sports drinks and other beverages. That could hit the food market early next year, says Ranjan Patnaik, vice president for technology strategy and operational excellence. Another protein in the pipeline could be used as egg whites — think vegan meringue and baked goods. "We have made all kinds those of pound cake, meringue, other recipes" in their development lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, Patnaik says. New Culture, another California startup, is also targeting dairy: It's using microbial fermentation to make casein, milk proteins that give cheese its stretchy quality – which, alas, many vegan cheeses today seem to lack, says co-founder Inja Radman. If all this sounds a little too futuristic, consider this: Much of the cheese produced today already relies on the same technology in the form of rennet, an enzyme used to curdle milk. Cheese makers used to get it from the stomachs of slaughtered calves but for many years now, much of the rennet used for cheese has been made via microbial fermentation, notes Friedrich. Given that this technology is already out there, and that the synthetic animals proteins produced are exact genetic replicas of the real thing, the companies making them don't anticipate major hurdles with regulators at the Food and Drug Administration. Some critics — like Dana Perls, senior food campaigner for the environmental group Friends of the Earth — are concerned that the FDA will not give sufficient scrutiny to this new wave of synthetic proteins. Perls worries that the adoption of these proteins will make our food supply even more dependent on the fruits of biotechnology. "The real solution for climate chaos and animal welfare problems are the truly organic, plant-based sources of proteins and organic solutions for less and better meat," Perls says. Many dairy farmers are also not on board. For one thing, says Alan Bjerga of the National Milk Producers Federation, an industry group that represents dairy producers, products made with synthetic dairy proteins may not have the same nutritional profile – such as vitamin and mineral content — as those made with milk from real cows. "We want to make sure that consumers are very informed that these are not nutritionally the same," he says. Others in the food industry, however, have embraced the new start-ups. Archer Daniels Midland, a global ingredient and food processing company, has partnered with Perfect Day. Fonterra, a multinational dairy giant based in New Zealand, is an investor in Motif Ingredients. And Clara Foods has teamed up with Ingredion, which supplies ingredients to the food and beverage industry, among others.

Sesame allergies more common than previously thought, says new studyRachel Grumman Bender,Yahoo Lifestyle Mon, Aug 5 2:29 PM PDT www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/sesame-allergies-more-common-than-previously-thought-says-new-study-212916884.html
Sesame allergies are more common than previously thought, based on a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open. In fact, it’s the ninth most common allergy in the U.S., according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI).
The August 2019 study shows that an estimated 1.5 million children and adults in the U.S. may have a sesame allergy — that’s nearly as common as soy and pistachio allergies, according to the AAAAI.
Many experience “severe reactions” to the allergen, according to the researchers. “The signs of a sesame allergy are the same as for allergic reactions to other foods,” Jacqueline A. Pongracic, MD, division head of allergy/immunology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “The manifestations may involve the GI tract (abdominal discomfort/cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea), skin (itchy rash, hives, swelling), respiratory tract (cough, throat tightness, difficulty breathing, wheezing) and neurologic and cardiovascular systems (drop in blood pressure, pallor, dizziness, weakness and loss of consciousness).”
Sesame allergies may be more common than previously thought. (Photo: Getty Images)
In some cases, it can cause anaphylaxis — a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. People with a sesame allergy are also more likely to have an additional food allergy, with peanut allergy being the most common one, according to the study.
It can be hard to avoid exposure to the allergen. That’s partly because the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004, which is enforced by the Food and Drug Administration, only requires manufacturers to list the top eight food allergens — milk, eggs, fish (bass, flounder, cod), crustacean shellfish (crab, lobster, shrimp), tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans), peanuts, wheat, and soybeans — on most food labels. Sesame is currently not listed on labels as a major food allergen.
As the study authors point out: “The decision to not include sesame in labeling laws was made when the aforementioned 8 allergens were believed to be responsible for 90 percent of food allergies.”
Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand already have sesame labeling requirements. The researchers of the new study hope the results prompt the FDA to make widespread labeling changes in the U.S., which they have been considering since October 2018. “It's a simple measure to install and it could protect lives," Moshe Ben-Shoshan, an associate professor of pediatrics at Montreal Children's Hospital in Canada, told CNN.
In the meantime, Illinois governor JB Pritzker took action for his state on July 26 by signing into law a mandate that requires packaged food labels to list whether sesame is an ingredient.
The other reason it’s not easy to avoid sesame: It can be found in a variety of food products (in seed, oil and paste form, such as tahini), according to the AAAAI. Sesame — sometimes listed as Sesamum indicum on the label — can also be present in some cosmetics, medications, and supplements.
“It is important for consumers to be aware of sesame allergies,” the senior author of the study, Ruchi S. Gupta, MD, told the AAAI. “With evidence mounting that sesame allergy is on the rise, and can result in severe reactions, we are hopeful that the Food and Drug Administration will take these data into account as they determine whether or not to add sesame to their list of major food allergens.”
So what should you do if you suspect you or a loved one has a sesame allergy? Pongracic recommends seeing an allergist to confirm the diagnosis. “An allergist will first take a detailed history, then determine whether skin testing or blood testing should be performed to see if allergen antibody to sesame is present,” she explains. “After confirming the diagnosis, an allergist will educate the patient about potential high risk situations and how to avoid sesame. They will also provide guidance about how to prevent future reactions and how to manage a reaction should it occur. They will prescribe medications to carry at all times.”
There is no cure for food allergies. The best way to protect yourself is to avoid possible exposure. FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) provides a list of some of the foods that typically contain sesame, and recommends carrying an epinephrine auto-injector — the first-line of treatment for anaphylaxis — with you at all times if you’re allergic.

turmeric.news/New science confirms eating turmeric every day reverses cancer08/04/2017 / By Isabelle Z.
A report in the British Medical Journal illustrates how a woman has beaten blood cancer with the help of turmeric.
In 2007, 67-year-old Dieneke Ferguson was diagnosed with myeloma and she progressed to stage three within 15 months. Three failed rounds of chemotherapy and four failed stem cell transplants later, doctors told her she had very little hope.
She told the U.K.’s Daily Mail: “I have been on all sorts of toxic drugs and the side-effects were terrifying.” She once lost her memory for three days, and two vertebrae in her spine collapsed and had to be injected with a type of concrete for stability.
Four years after her initial diagnosis, she took matters into her own hands and started taking a daily dose of curcumin, the key component of turmeric. She took eight grams every evening on an empty stomach.
Since then, her cancer has stabilized and her blood counts have returned to normal. She has also enjoyed a good quality of life.
When she told her oncologist she was taking turmeric, she reports that he was very interested after seeing what a big difference it made. Myeloma is the second most common type of blood cancer, and it begins in plasma cells in the bone marrow. When these cells become abnormal and begin to multiply, it becomes myeloma and causes severe pain, nerve damage, fatigue and bone damage. Treatment is generally geared toward controlling its symptoms because there is no cure, and people typically don’t live beyond five years of being diagnosed.
The BMJ report says that Ferguson’s results suggest that turmeric could be used to help myeloma patients in the future, adding: “The fact that our patient, who had advanced stage disease and was effectively salvaged while exclusively on curcumin, suggests a potential antimyeloma effect of curcumin.”
No other possible explanation for her recovery The report’s co-author, Jamie Cavenagh, said that there is no other possible explanation for her remarkable recovery beyond the curcumin. She continues to take the tablets to this day.
The scientists are recommending further evaluation in clinical trials to pursue the possibility of using it as an official treatment. This could prove difficult, however, because doctors cannot prescribe it until it has been tested in wide-scale trials that cost millions. Natural compounds cannot be patented, so finding an investor would be extremely difficult.
Turmeric benefits a wide range of ailments Turmeric is a perennial herb that contains the natural antioxidant polyphenol curcumin, which also has analgesic properties. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of myeloma and several other types of tumor cells.
Some of the other illnesses that can benefit from curcumin include infections, dementia, depression and heart disease. A 2016 review in the Journal of Medicinal Food highlighted its potential for arthritis treatment, and doctors have also applauded its anti-inflammatory effects. A recent study found that it can help destroy neuroblastoma tumor cells, showing promise as a way to treat the most common type of cancer in infants. Another study is expected to be published soon showing its positive effects on bowel cancer.
Although Ferguson said she took turmeric on an empty stomach, it is usually recommended that people take it with a fat or oil to help boost its absorption because it is a fat-soluble compound. Many people enjoy turmeric with yogurt or warm milk. In addition, studies have shown that taking it with black pepper boosts absorption significantly; many supplements also contain a small amount of black pepper for this reason.
It’s wonderful to hear that people are successfully treating problems that doctors cannot conquer using nothing more than what nature has provided us. Not everyone will have the same success that Ferguson did, but the fact that natural solutions can help people turn around “hopeless” situations deserves further exploration, profit possibilities or not.

Don't Fear That Expired Food4:32 LISTEN ondemand.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/npr/me/2012/12/20121226_me_11.mp3?orgId=1&topicId=1053&d=272&p=3&story=167819082&siteplayer=true&dl=1 December 26, 2012 3:22 AM ET Heard on Morning Edition DAN CHARLES www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2012/12/26/167819082/dont-fear-that-expired-food
The expiration date on foods like orange juice and even milk aren't indicators of when those products will go bad.
Now that the Christmas feast is over, you may be looking at all the extra food you made, or the food that you brought home from the store that never even got opened.
And you may be wondering: How long can I keep this? What if it's past its expiration date? Who even comes up with those dates on food, anyway, and what do they mean?
Here's the short answer: Those "sell by" dates are there to protect the reputation of the food. They have very little to do with food safety. If you're worried whether food has started to go bad, just smell it.
One of the places that knows most about the shelf life of food is a scientific establishment in Livermore, Calif., called the National Food Lab www.thenfl.com/contact-us-2/taster . At the NFL, they put food on shelves for days, or weeks, or even years, to see how it holds up.
www.eurofinsfii.com/
Sometimes, they'll try to accelerate the process with 90-degree heat and high humidity.
And then, from time to time, they'll take some of the food — whether it's bagged salad greens, breakfast cereal, or fruit juice — off the shelf and place it in front of a highly trained panel of experts who check the taste and smell and texture.
Article continues after sponsor message
"You would think that everybody can taste and smell food, but some of us are much better at it than others," says Jena Roberts, vice president for business development at the NFL. The lab has 40 of these food tasters on staff. "They are the most fit people in the group," says Roberts. "Because they don't eat the food. They expectorate it. Which is a fancy college word for spit it in a cup."
The experts give the food grades, in numbers. The numbers go down as the food gets older. Bread gets stale. Salad dressings can start to taste rancid.
John Ruff, president of the Institute of Food Technologists www.ift.org/ in Chicago, says the companies that sell this food take a look at those grades and decide where they will draw the line, to protect the reputation of their products.
"If the product was designed, let's say, to be a 7 when it was fresh, you may choose that at 6.2, it's gotten to the point where [you] don't want it to be on the market anymore," he says.
"If it's 6.0, would most people still find it reasonably good? Absolutely," he says. "But companies want people to taste their products as best they can at the optimum, because that's how they maintain their business and their market shares."
This is all organized and carried out by food companies; there's no federal law that requires dates on any food except for infant formula, although some states do require sell-by dates on milk or meat.
Still, these dates don't really tell you anything about whether food is safe.
According to Ruff, most products are safe to eat long after their expiration date. In fact, even meat or milk that's clearly starting to spoil is not necessarily dangerous. "Very often, you won't eat it because of the smell, and you probably won't like the taste, but in a lot of cases, it's unlikely to cause you illness," he says.
Food doesn't become truly dangerous by sitting on the shelf too long. Ruff says that the real food safety risk is from food that's been contaminated with salmonella or listeria bacteria, or disease-causing strains of E. coli. Unfortunately, there's no way for the consumer to detect this. Contaminated food doesn't smell bad; it might have arrived in the store only yesterday.
"In 40 years, in eight countries, if I think of major product recalls and food poisoning outbreaks, I can't think of [one] that was driven by a shelf-life issue," Ruff says.
Canned food, in particular, can stay safe for a really long time. In 1974, scientists at the National Food Processors Association in Washington, D.C., got their hands on several old cans of food.
Janet Dudek, now semi-retired and living in Vienna, Va., was among the scientists who analyzed this old food. Her assignment was a can of corn, vintage 1934, that was found in someone's basement in California.
When they opened the can, Dudek says, the contents looked and smelled pretty much like ordinary canned corn. Analysis showed that it had most of the usual complement of nutrients — although there were lower levels of a few, such as vitamin C.
Results were similar for century-old canned oysters, tomatoes and red peppers in cans recovered from a sunken steamboat, buried in river silt near Omaha, Neb.
Dudek says, as far as she knows, nobody actually tasted this food. That just wasn't done, she says. But they probably could have. "It would have been safe to eat if the can itself maintained its integrity," she says.
When food in supermarkets passes its sell-by date, though, it gets swept off the shelves. Often, it's donated to food banks. Sometimes it's auctioned off.
But if you discover such food in your pantry at home, there's really no reason to throw it out. Ruff says you should just sniff the meat and milk. If it smells funny, go ahead and toss it.
But for most foods, don't worry. "As a consumer, I've certainly opened packages of food that were five years old."

healthbeyondbelief.com/ The Health Beyond Belief JourneyAt the age of nineteen, John Newton moved to New York City to train as an actor, finding significant success there as well as in Los Angeles. His primary focus all those years, however, was healing and higher consciousness which he pursued relentlessly. John often turned down substantial acting roles that would conflict with his healing practice.
John shares, “Acting was more of a lucrative hobby, giving me the financial freedom and time between jobs to pursue what truly filled my soul: Helping humanity end suffering. As more and more people were helped by the work, the choice to switch careers became obvious.”
While in his twenties, John had an awakening that left him in a free-fall of consciousness. Soon after, he was able to enter the gap between thoughts at will and for extended periods of time. In this state John is able to support well-being by removing the blocks and burdens from people’s lives and family lineages. John also assists people in waking up to their true and eternal nature: Consciousness itself.
John’s Clients For the last thirty plus years, his clients have included Political figures, Emmy, Grammy, and Academy Award winners, professional and Olympic athletes, National Institute of Health board members, law enforcement, veterans, scientists, doctors, therapists, and even priests, nuns and rabbis! He often works side-by-side with medical doctors, therapists and their patients, integrating his techniques into their practices.
There are imprints in our DNA that store limiting experiences from our life as well as our family lineage. Releasing this is the key to getting our life back. There is no physical contact with John’s work and no belief is necessary. The only requirement is to want help. John encourages people who are skeptical to let the results speak for themselves.
We All Have This Gift It is important to note that John doesn’t refer to himself as a healer. “The higher power of our understanding does the work. I am what you might call a facilitator. I also believe that anyone can learn to do this kind of work – to help ourselves, our communities and the planet.” John presents this work to complement the care of medical professionals and not be seen as a substitute. Seeing our healing in a holistic way yields the best results.

New Study Finds Chipotle and Sweetgreen Bowls Contain Cancer-Linked, Non-Biodegradable Chemicals Claudia Harmata 6 days ago www.msn.com/en-us/health/health-news/new-study-finds-chipotle-and-sweetgreen-bowls-contain-cancer-linked-non-biodegradable-chemicals/ar-AAFnO7e The iconic beige bowls that have taken the restaurant industry by storm for their “compostable” nature in the popular wave of fast-casual dining have been found to contain non-biodegradable chemicals that are linked to certain cancers.
In a new investigation by New Food Economy, the outlet conducted extensive testing on the molded fiber bowls from 14 locations of 8 different New York City restaurants — including Chipotle and Sweetgreen.
Their research found that all of the bowls tested positive for high levels of fluorine. Experts conducting the testing with the outlet explained that this find indicates the bowls were treated with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, PFAS are man-made chemicals that are “very persistent in the environment and in the human body – meaning they don’t break down and they can accumulate over time.”
New Food Economy notes that these compounds, sometimes called “forever chemicals,” are what help the bowls “hold hot, wet, and greasy food” that would normally destroy a paper product. However, the PFAS’ presence in the bowls reveals that they are not as environmentally conscious as advertised.
In Chipotle’s 2016 Sustainability Report, they indicate their plan to introduce “compostable burrito bowls at all locations by 2018,” and in their 2018 Report that confirmed that “100% of our bowls were made from compostable, plant-based fiber.”
A representative for Chipotle did not address the new study directly, but tells PEOPLE in statement, “we are committed to using safe and sustainable food packaging and only partner with suppliers who make fluorochemical sciences and food safety a top priority. These suppliers operate under strict guidelines set forth by the FDA, and have all provided Chipotle with certification that all raw material and finished pulp products fully meet regulatory requirements.”
Sweetgreen has also been adamant of their bowl’s bio-degradability, even tweeting at a customer in 2017 that their “takeout bowls” are “100% compostable!”
In addition to the bombshell that bowls are actually contributing to the industry’s massive waste problem, the EPA reports that exposure to PFAS can lead to severe human health conditions, including cancer, developmental issues, and reproductive harm.
The New Food Economy specifically notes that the PFAS are known to be linked to health conditions including colitis, thyroid disorders, and kidney and testicular cancers. Due to their public health implications, the outlet reports that they “have been mostly phased out of production in the U.S.”
In fact, earlier this year members of Congress introduced a bill to ban the use of PFAS in any paper food containers, as when people eat from PFAS treated containers there is a chance the chemicals could be transferred to their food.
Since the bowls were advertised as compostable, these bowls have also been contaminating compost sites with PFAS, which means they have ultimately contaminated food crops, New Food Economy’s report included.
Despite its harmful effects, the outlet notes that for right now there is no “commercially viable” alternative for the restaurants.

SHUNGITE PROPERTIES FOR EMF PROTECTIONwww.energymuse.com/blog/shungite-properties-emf-protection/ I first was introduced to Shungite in Sedona Arizona years ago. When walking out with my purchases, a plastic bag filled with black stone fragments caught my eye. It didn’t catch my eye because it was sparkly and full of color—it caught my eye because it was quite the opposite. I walked back in and asked the owner what the stone was. She told me that it was a stone out of Russia and that the shungite properties are healing people. She said that the chips are meant to be put in your water, and that the natural shungite properties would purify the water.
She said people are calling it the miracle stone of our century. I couldn’t believe it. “This matte black stone that looks like chips of coal is so powerful?” I asked her in disbelief.
“Yes, I can’t keep it in stock. Those are the only two bags I have left,” she said. Of course, I bought both bags, and my journey with Shungite began. I kept one bag for myself and gave the second bag to Timmi. When we drank the water, and we could immediately tell that this was no ordinary mineral.
•••
Not too long ago, a book on Shungite arrived on my desk from a friend.
“Have you read it?” he asked. “If not, take the time to do so. It is life changing.” Being the knowledge junkie that I am, I read the entire book in one night, and my life did change. Shungite is truly a stone that is unlike any other on planet Earth. One reason that could be is that it might not come from planet Earth, but from a meteorite (but that’s a whole other blog post). The importance of this mineral is so vast that pages and pages and pages can be written about it, and I promise to do so as I discover more about it from working with it. The deeper you go within in the stone, and the more you know about it, the more you need to know about it.
Place a shungite pyramid near all electronic devices—such as your television, computer, microwaves, radio receivers, wi-fi hot spots etc. to neutralize any EMFs.
One of the most beneficial uses of the shungite metaphysical properties is to protect against electrical magnetic fields, also known as EMFs. We are constantly surrounded by technology—cell phones, computers, televisions, Wifi and the list goes on and on. Each of these radiate man-made, EMFs. Many people experience EMF sensitivity, and EMFs have been linked to constriction of blood flow to major organs, poor digestion and immune systems, increased blood pressure, hearth rate and blood sugar, arthritis, anxiety and depression. Apple even has a disclaimer encouraging you to not hold your phone directly to your head. Fortunately, there is protection from EMFs.
In layman terms, Shungite has a reputation of being able to absorb and neutralize these frequencies due to its components on a molecular level. It is the only natural material in existence to have the presence of hollow molecular carbon cages, known as fullerenes, embedded within this mineral, which allows it to neutralize the EMFs. The scientists who discovered fullerenes won a Noble Prize in Chemistry in 1996. The natural existence of fullerenes remained unclear until it was verified in deposits of Shungite. YES! Finally! It’s true! The science and the crystal worlds have finally come together. The bottom line is that using Shungite is something you can do now to assist with the vast EMF issue in our world.
The first step to introducing Shungite into your life is to place it next to your phone outlets or in rooms with lots of electronics. Place a piece of Shungite on the back of your cell phone and on top of your electronics. We have shungite pyramids that you can even keep on the dashboard of your car. With so many studies backing its EMF protection, we’ve already covered our office and homes with it.
Everyone has a unique experience with Shungite, maybe the cosmos wanted it to be that way. How EMF Protection Jewelry Works: Complete Guide beatemf.com/jewelry/
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already heard about dangerous EMF radiation exposure. Once you identify a hazard, the natural (and immediate) response is to identify protection from it.
There are many ways to shield yourself from artificial electromagnetic frequencies, but today I want to focus on a single growing trend:
EMF jewelry.
It’s a novel idea – easy, inexpensive, and convenient.
But does it work?
Let’s find out.
Table of Contents How EMF Jewelry Works 1. Reduction (Attenuation) Shungite 2. Neutralization Tourmaline Biofield Tuning (Q-Link) Schumann Resonance Generation Benefits of Wearing EMF Protection Jewelry Types of EMF Jewelry Necklaces/Pendants Bracelets Final Verdict: Is EMF Jewelry a Scam? Does Shungite Protect Against EMF? How EMF Jewelry Works
This depends on what type of jewelry it is and what it’s made of. In general, EMF blocking jewelry can be divided into 2 primary categories according to their effect on electromagnetic radiation:
Reducing it directly (attenuation) Neutralizing and/or balancing it Let’s look at each a little more in depth. For each mechanism of action, I’ll also review the popular materials used to achieve their proposed effects.
1. Reduction (Attenuation)
legit emf jewelry
I wholeheartedly support jewelry that actually reduces EMF radiation via blocking or absorbing.
This type can be measured using an EMF detector or meter. That’s why it gets my stamp approval as shown above.
Unless you’re in something like a Faraday cage, you can’t expect to block 100% of emissions. However, jewelry constructed of certain materials can certainly reduce how much EMF radiation seeps through to your body.
One of the best materials that I know of is shungite.
Shungite Shungite is a mineral primarily sourced from Karelia, Russia. It’s the largest known deposit of shungite with somewhere around 300,000,000 tons.
Its shielding power is thanks to its unique structure that consists of large, hollow carbon molecules arranged in the shape of a sphere (known as fullerenes).
For centuries, we’ve known of carbon’s absorption ability, but the cage-like arrangement of shungite’s carbon molecules take that to a whole new level.
Pure shungite is almost entirely made of these carbon molecules, making up roughly 98% of its construction. It is this high carbon/extreme absorption ability that makes shungite an effective tool for EMF protection.
2. Neutralization Some emf jewelry is a scam
The other category that most EMF jewelry falls into is the idea of counteracting, balancing, or negating the effects of EMFs. This type of protection can’t be measured through an EMF meter.
For this reason, I remain skeptical, but I continue to research it.
Too many people have experienced incredible results from using this type of EMF accessory for me to discount it completely.
I encourage you to take the information presented here and conduct your own research to determine if this type of jewelry offers any value for you.
Ok, so back to neutralization:
Some substances claim to neutralize via negative ion generation or strengthening your body’s own electric field. Tourmaline is one example.
Tourmaline A unique gemstone commonly referred to as the “electricity stone,” tourmaline is one of the only crystals able to produce both positive and negative ions. Because of this dual nature, tourmaline generates its own electrical field, although a very weak one.
Japanese researchers showed that its electric field was still generated even when cut into chunks, which of course, is what we see in jewelry items.
So the benefit of tourmaline for emf protection is really two-fold:
On the one hand, it emits negative ions. It sounds backwards, but artificial EMFs generate positive ions (bad) while our own natural electric field generates negative ions (good). Exposure to negative ions is good, which tourmaline provides. On the other hand, tourmaline’s weak electric field is said to support our own, strengthening it against the effects of artificial fields that surround us. Biofield Tuning (Q-Link) Then there’s something called biofield tuning – a phrase adopted in 1994 by the National Institutes of Health to refer to research revealing a subtle energy field emitted by the human body.
Proponents of neutralizing EMF jewelry say this biofield is often thrown out of whack by cell phone frequencies, power lines, etc.
A company called Q-Link is among the leaders in this industry. They help explain this process by picturing 2 tuning forks. If you hold a pair of tuning forks vibrating at different rates close to each other, they will begin to interact and amplify each other.
So these types of bracelets and necklaces claim to interact with your body’s own frequency in such a way as to amplify and strengthen it. When strengthened in this way, it is better able to overcome artificial (and potentially harmful) frequencies.
Schumann Resonance Generation Schumann generating jewelry works in a similar way. The term “Schumann resonance” was coined in 1962 to identify Earth’s natural frequency. Since we live on earth, our bodies are tuned to that frequency.
Proponents of these devices claim that artificial frequencies disrupt this connection, resulting in a number of possible side effects.
I tend to agree, but I just haven’t seen enough concrete evidence to have a definite, educated opinion either way.
To remedy this, a select number of manufacturers have developed wearable devices that generate Earth’s natural frequency at a low level.
Leaders in the field of frequency tuning jewelry include EarthCalm and Shieldite.
Benefits of Wearing EMF Protection Jewelry
To understand the benefits you stand to gain, you have to first understand what EMF does to your body.
Thanks to the chemical reactions always occuring, our bodies are filled with tiny electrical currents. Electric impulses govern everything from our heartbeats to the way neurons communicate in our brain.
External electric fields have a direct impact on those inside. Research is still ongoing, but it seems that disruption to these natural fields can result in symptoms like:
Headaches Palpitations Tingling sensations Light and/or sound sensitivity Insomnia Anxiety Muscle pain And more So the benefits of protecting yourself from disruptions caused by EMFs is a reduction of such symptoms.
Types of EMF Jewelry
Currently, your options for protective jewelry are pretty limited, consisting mostly of bracelets and necklaces or pendants.
Necklaces/Pendants
In most cases, you can’t tell a specialized EMF blocking necklace from any other. They are very discreet, but at the same time, fantastic conversation starters (a great opportunity to spread awareness of EMF exposure!).
Some EMF pendants consist of a chunk of one stone like shungite or tourmaline, while others offer a combination.
Check out our in-depth guide & best picks for EMF Blocking Pendants!
Bracelets
These are great for people who are claustrophobic or uncomfortable with things around their neck. They are available in a wide range of colors and styles from dressy to casual. If you search Amazon for EMF protection jewelry, you’ll find that many shielded bracelets consist of several different stones or crystals.
Some even utilize magnets for their proposed muscle and joint relief benefits. Be sure to look for the documentation and research behind materials used. Most reputable brands provide this openly, but you may need to send them an email for more information.
Final Verdict: Is EMF Jewelry a Scam?
As with any other product type, there are definitely scams in this arena.
It’s critical to do your homework before making a purchase, so you don’t get sucked into a scam, wasting your hard-earned money.
If I were to offer you just one tip, it’d be this:
Always look for documentation on the technology and materials used.
Bonus points if the manufacturer provides third-party lab testing for their products.
The amount of EMF protection will vary from product to product, depending on materials used and the quantities of each element.
You’ll need to decide if you want to stick with measurable results as provided by EMF blocking jewelry such as shungite, or if you’re willing to branch out into energy and frequency protection devices.
Just go where the research leads.
Don’t depend on product reviews. It’s unfortunate, but many of those reviews were paid for, so they are biased and not genuine.
I hope this guide to EMF protection jewelry helps you make a decision that’s best for your family! If you have any questions, just drop me an email! Want to learn more? Check out the articles below:
