If you don't like Beyoncé you are pretty much screwed it seems. (according to these two critics) Is she that good? I know very little about her. A lot of popular music is just too noisy to me...too enhanced where the sound is more important than the voice. I call it corporate music.

Womenfolk did have a substantially better year in 2016 than they've had in a while, and a lot of that came in the C&W category. The album Midwest Farmer's Daughter by Margo Price is a great example of that. It is kind of old-school honky-tonk, but Margo infuses it with a touch of 1960s/1970s Memphis/Muscle Shoals (it was recorded at the old Sun Studios facility in Memphis) and California country-rock as well. And there are tons of other examples one could cite (IMHO).

I agree about the over-hyping of Beyonce. Erik, did you see that they did cite not only Margo, but also Marin Morris? They singled them out as well as the return of The Dixie Chicks (unfortunately, they selected a performance by The Dixie Chicks with Beyonce and then said "IT WAS THE TELEVISION MOMENT OF 2016!") But they did mention Bowie's last album and also talked about those who left us in 2016. So, it was not all Queen B all of the time (although too much in my opinion).

With respect to the Beyoncé/Dixie Chicks pairing on the CMAs, I think it did what it was designed to do, and then some, which was to generate discussion, debate, and invective. The reaction of so-called "fans" of country music was way, way over the top in terms of its right-wing virulence. That said, though, it wouldn't surprise me if the idea of getting Queen Bey was the idea of one Natalie Maines, as some of the virulence seemed to be directed as much towards her as it was Beyoncé; apparently, fourteen years later, they're still not over her besmirching of GWB.

I just don't understand the musical tastes of people but learned long ago not to question them as those tastes are so personal. In the early days, before Linda became popular I too was a target because I was so vocal about her to the point I wrote djs, program directors and called radio stations in NYC to try to get them to play her music. I recall calling a popular dj on air named Cousin Brucie from NYC. When I requested Linda's music his first question was "how old are you. You sound like you're 8!" Somewhat indignant I promptly said 17 (but was really 15). That was late 1960's and boy did I catch fire for the cost of that long distance phone call from my parents. ouch. The good old days, not!
