Quote by padevitto:
I think that's what it is, since of course her singing voice isn't there anymore. But given that Parkinson's has also limited her mobility quite a bit, the fact that she's making public appearances at all anymore is something of a miracle (IMHO).

I knew she wouldn't be singing but I am surprised -especially about the venue choice..
I saw her in NY when she was promoting the book.. I told her that she had the most beautiful voice that I would ever know...she was so very sweet

I have been to two of these and if this one is similar in content; it is part interview with an a/v presentation then it has a Q&A at the end of the show. I was at the 92y show also, pat. I know I have said this before but I felt like the luckiest person in the world to be the last book she signed that day. eddiejinnj

It says to take the Long Island Railroad line and then once you get to the station for that town on Long Island to take a cab from there. If you took a taxi from Times Square, it could cost you $80 to $100 one way. That's a lot. Example -- Newark Airport to midtown Manhattan by taxi is $80.

If that is the only reason you are going I wonder if it would be better to fly into Long Island MacArthur Airport (or whatever they call it now) and stay at a closer hotel? But I am guessing you may want to see the sights of the city? Depending on where you stay on Long Island if it is near the subway you could take that to Manhattan very easily and cheaply. I haven't lived back there since the 1970's and I know things change.

Here is the URL for Tilles Center's "Directions" page - Directions to Tilles Center Here is the part about taking the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) from Penn Station -- " By Public Transportation Train – From Pennsylvania Station: Take the Long Island Rail Road to Hicksville station, Port Washington station, or Greenvale station. Port Washington station and Hicksville station both have bus service to the LIU Post Campus, although it is necessary to transfer buses if traveling from Port Washington station. Port Washington and Hicksville stations have taxi stands, and taxi service can be arranged by phone from the Greenvale station, by calling Mid-Island Taxi at 516.671.0707 or Arena Taxi Service at 516.671.1848. Taxi service prices range from $8 to $20. For Long Island Railroad information visit www.mta.info or call 516.822.5477. " I just Google-Mapped the distance/directions from Times Square in Manhattan to Tilles Center and, depending on the route, it is 25 to 30 miles away. That would be one very expensive cab ride. Your best bet is to take the LIRR train to Greenvale and then call a taxi from that station. You might want to allow extra time as I am not sure how quickly cabs run out there.

I would have started with a travel agent OR called the Tiles Center for suggestions on what others have done in your situation.
Me, being frugal out of necessity I would fly into JFK airport, take a taxi or shuttle to a hotel in Jerico or Westbury Long Island and then schedule a taxi to the Tiles Center from there which is really close...maybe 5 miles or so. Who knows, a hotel there may have a direct shuttle to the Tiles Center and your hotel could have a shuttle to and from the airport as well.
If you wanted to spend time in NYC I would schedule that after the event so you would have more time and not worry about missing any part of the event.
Also, check the Tiles Center website and call them as they have probably helped many in your situation with suggestions.
There is nothing worse than getting stranded or lost in unfamiliar territory and it doesn't hurt to check.

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions. Im staying with a friend that lives in times square. I guess i will splurge on a taxi. It happens to be my Birthday the day before so its kind of like a birthday present to me!! Lol
I am younger than the average Linda fan so i never got to see her live at her prime. . I wasnt even born. Lol. I found out who she was when i read her Memoir. Needless to say I became an instant fan. I have every single recording of hers and have probably read and /or seen every single interview she has ever given.
Even though she is obviously not going to sing i am beyond excited for the Opportunity to be in her presence. I have really good seats so i guess i will be able to see her pretty well.

Well then happy birthday!! What is your favorite album and song? Or your preferred Linda genre? I have a posted list of Linda duets that you might not be aware of on youtube you should check out. She has done some great songs on other peoples albums.
Knowing all that then a taxi is a good choice. Make sure you get one well in advance. I haven't been in Times Square since 1973. My mother said she went one New Years Eve in the 1930's and it was so cold but that was long before global warming lol.

Ohh thank you for the birthday wishes Ronstadtfanaz!!!! I have to say since I am Latin and grew up listening to mexican music those are my favorite Linda albums. The first time I heard "canciones de mi padre" I about died. That angelic voice singing those beautiful melodies was almost to much to take. The sad thing and I hope with YouTube it can change is that my friends/peers don't even know who she is and if I weren't addicted to reading autobiographies and memoirs it's very possible I would have never known of Linda's existence.
I am very thankful also to Linda because my generation wasn't really exposed to the American songbook and since I didn't even grow up in the US I was even less exposed to them. She has opened my musical world tenfold. Because of her interviews I look up every single person she admires (singer, composer, writer) and have learned so much about music in just three short years.
Last but not least, I admire her as a person. I may not agree with everything she says but I like that she is always honest and sincere. She has integrity and I like that very much in a person.
By the way, I have checked your duet list on YouTube and love it. Thank you for taking the time to put it together. I'm sure it took lots of hours of hard work.

Linda has said that her Spanish music albums were also her personal favorites as a genre. I think it has to do with the nature of the song showcasing her voice and allowing it to be all that it can be. (kind of like the Navy) So I am guessing you are aware of her Spanish music and songs NOT on her own albums? One that I have never been able to find is Linda's version of Different Drum in Spanish. I knew someone years ago that said they had that recording. I never got to hear or see it but she swore up and down it was a Ronstadt recording. I still have my doubts lol.

I knew someone years ago that said they had that recording. I never got to hear or see it but she swore up and down it was a Ronstadt recording. I still have my doubts lol. I've never heard of a Spanish version of "Different Drum," so that is news to me.I'd very much like to hear it if it exists but it may be one of those songs where Linda rehearsed a version of the song in Spanish for her concerts or maybe just for fun, but it went no further than a rehearsal. About Linda's talking tour shows, I'm still bummed out by the fact she's not appearing anywhere close to where I live, and every appearance is too far away from where I live. The people who put together these shows can't very well use Linda's health as an excuse that keeps from being able to appear. If she can fly from San Francisco to New York City, she could fly from San Francisco to Dallas or to Oklahoma City or to any other city that may be closer. I do know Linda's health isn't good and it does appear the shows she is doing are becoming fewer and fewer. Still, I'd like to be able to see her and talk to her and maybe ask her a question or two about something that was not covered in her book. I still wish someone would do a documentary on her while there's still time and get her to talk more about her career - the part that was successful, some of her personal memories that she can recall (not questions necessarily about her life), her regrets, etc. I think I could ask her a thousand questions on my own and still have more questions to ask. Linda's talking tour shows always seem to cover the same material and you have to wonder is that all she can remember? Or could someone ask her a question that would jog her memory and allow her to recall things she can't remember? She did say about her book that she was helped by others talking about her past and jogging her memory, so I rather imagine the parts of her life that everyone thinks was glossed over was more like no one was around to jog her memory of those days. Of course, I also happen to think that maybe it's hard and sad for her to think about those days because many of the musicians who played a part in her success, especially Kenny and Andrew, are dead. If someone wasn't with Linda during that time, maybe it's more difficult recalling events because of her illness than one realizes.

The best person to do that is a Ronstadt expert, a musician, a friend, record producer, an ex-boyfriend, manager and he is still around. A wonderful guy named John Boylan who has been with Linda practically from the beginning and now to the end. He is very protective in a good way and seems to be easily amused by her. They are definitely soul mates. I am sure Linda appreciates John as much as all of her caring fans should. For watching over her yet giving her space over the years. I have never seen that much hair on anyone so old. That may be his greatest feat!

Linda has always said she doesn't have the best memory. At least, I believe she mentioned it since 1980's interviews. It could just be from the fact that she led a very fast paced life for many years and some minor details (to her memory but maybe important to us) got lost in "Life in the Fast Lane" of touring, touring, touring. Also, I never knew of any Spanish version of "Different Drum." I wonder what the arrangement would be for that?
Eden, there is great song on a Chieftains album with Ry Cooder "San Patricio" from 2010 that Linda sings a great song in Spanish. It is called "A la Orilla de un Palmar" It is a traditional song arranged by Linda. It seems to be the last commercial lead that she recorded. I guess this was recorded after "All I Know" with Jimmy Webb from that year. Then she did background vocals for David Bromberg in 2011. That seems to be the last recorded piece with her voice on it. So her recording career did extend into this decade, though much more limited than usual. eddiejinnj

It was a beautiful night with Linda... She looks beautiful... I must confess it broke my heart to see her being helped on stage and also do see her hand shaking... but as the night progressed my sadness turned to joy... she was celebrating her career.. she led us through the presentation with such humor intelligence and humility... I just love her

The eye makeup looked good on her to accentuate those eyes. Her skin looked great. I could not believe that we had front row center. The best seats I ever got for her and I have seen her many times. There was some new pics different from the last time we went to one of these shows in DE. I didn't see that they were taking written questions. They must have been at the table where they were selling her book and 3 cd's "Duets", The "Just One Look" compilation and the new Trio Collection. I didn't stay at table long since I had everything they were selling already. My question was going to be re: has Linda ever performed "Different Drum" in Spanish live and/or is there also a recorded version. I was going to mention that this has been a discussion on our forum and promote it. When I spoke to John last night, I told him my name introduced him to my partner and asked him if he had ever heard of the Linda Fan's Forum. He said he has not. Maybe, if another member hits him up on his site. I believe one member. I don't know if it was Tony or Mark I. that got him to respond to him in past. You might mention that Eddie brought up the forum in LI and that you (author of e-mail) are also a member and it is a great place to get an indication where her fans are at and the info they discuss. I don't know if you saw me Pat? I have long light brown hair and was in the front. eddiejinnj

I may never have that chance, unless I have enough money to make the next appearance if there is one. Course, I'd like to win the lottery and produce that documentary I'm always talking about that would be a good idea to do on Linda. So, I take it they only took the written questions, no direct from the audience questions? Did anyone ask anything about Linda's career that was not covered in her book? Or something that was surprising? It'd be nice if John would come to the forum. Maybe we could ask him our questions or he could go online with Linda by his side and she could answer, and then he could type her response? I know of other celebrities who did this and who had others type their responses. The one thing I didn't like was some of the fans posted so many messages in a frenzy, a question asked of the celebrity might get missed or the answer might get missed. Another thing I noticed was people who talked about asking the stuff that wasn't known but then asked about the stuff that's already known. Sadly , the celebrities knew fans wanted something more than the known and were ready to answer, but they must've been as puzzled as the fans who didn't get through to ask their question because of the traffic or because it got lost in cyberspace.

I stood face to face with Linda 3 years ago and the first thing I noticed was her skin was like butta (as Babs would say). I am not sure what she uses but we need to find out. Secondly she looks SO MUCH better in person than even her best photos if you can imagine that. I am not sure how she does that but I am guessing there is a portrait of Linda Ronstadt slowly aging in one of her closets. (look up Dorian Gray) Thirdly all of her extra weight is mid body (like most Hispanic women I know). She looked really impressive then and she appears thinner nowadays probably because of a more restrictive diet. I don't think Linda has had any "work" done so she looks like our Linda whereas some of her contemporaries aren't even recognizable to their early selves.
I wish she would get on Joel Wallach's Parkinson program but even so she seems to be doing something right. Let's keep sending her good vibes nightly or when we can.

One thing that was asked was and this may not be direct quote but I'll try: "Did you ever think about doing an album with just a small jazz combo?" She said "I did one" and she seemed to not recall name of album. I went "Hummin to Myself" and she said "thank you" to me. Was so cool. I spoke out when there was a question of doing Joni Mitchell songs ever I think by the moderator. Linda and I said "River" at the same time. That is all I spoke since I didn't want to seem pushy if that is the right word. The moderator stated somewhat rhetorically that your last album was in 2009 and Linda said yes with Ann Savoy and that got some cheers. I knew it was 2006. He may be confusing that year with it being the last time she had an official concert. eddiejinnj

I stood face to face with Linda 3 years ago and the first thing I noticed was her skin was like butta (as Babs would say). I am not sure what she uses but we need to find out.
I know some who use fruits and vegetables, but most may just use make up to wipe away the years. I don't know about Linda. She's always struck me as a natural beauty and someone who has looked good from birth and will continue to look good until her passing. One good example of that was the late actress Jennifer Jones. Even as she neared her death at age 90, she was still a good looking woman, looking much younger than what she was.
Secondly she looks SO MUCH better in person than even her best photos if you can imagine that. I am not sure how she does that but I am guessing there is a portrait of Linda Ronstadt slowly aging in one of her closets. (look up Dorian Gray)
LOL. I get the Dorian Gray reference because of my own age and the fact that on the phone, people guess me as being in my 20s and in person in 40s. Wish I was as they miss my age by miles. I guess it's not so bad, but some people never come off so well in photos, although I've always thought Linda came off real well. It's why I believed she would've been a natural in the movies if she had decided to do that as well as singing. She and Elvis were two of the most photogenic people on the planet and who were said to look as good in person as they did in their photos - and in Elvis' case, in his movies. I have heard about other actors and singers who looked great in photos and in the movies but not so in real life, and people passed them by not realizing who they were, which is kind of weird.
Thirdly all of her extra weight is mid body (like most Hispanic women I know). She looked really impressive then and she appears thinner nowadays probably because of a more restrictive diet. I don't think Linda has had any "work" done so she looks like our Linda whereas some of her contemporaries aren't even recognizable to their early selves.
Most people who are overweight have the extra weight in the mid-section of their bodies. I know, I am overweight and that's where the weight is on me. Linda could conceivably get her weight down to what it was in her prime but then, I have to wonder if that would be beneficial to her because of her illness? Or would it be a detriment? As far as having any "work" done, no, Linda appears to me to be comfortable with how she looks. Maybe in her private, guarded moments, she wishes she were just 20 again with a future and a promise yet to be lived, or lived a different life. I think there is always some regret about the road not taken for all of us, and only Linda (and ourselves) know whether she (or we) would've traded if she (or we) had a second chance.
I wish she would get on Joel Wallach's Parkinson program but even so she seems to be doing something right. Let's keep sending her good vibes nightly or when we can.
I send out the good vibes Linda's way nightly and as a deist, pray for her as because of the gift she had, she was and is a special child of God. Her singing voice is not truly lost, it's still there and always will be, but the Parkinson's has sealed the section of her mind that was her path to and from the music. As I've suggested, I wish she would try hypnosis for another path way, because there may be one.
