Pat Benatar commented on Linda in her cover story in People Magazine's September 28, 1981 issue. The writer in the intro wrote Benatar is not just another Ronstadt retread for the 1980's. Pat Benatar later said in the interview that she does not live only for her career like Ronstadt does, then she goes on by saying "what does she have...nothing". I remember reading several interviews with Pat Benatar from back in the day where she seemed to be putting Linda down. I think many times the interviewers always tried to compare the two since Linda had been the biggest female singer for almost ten years by the time Pat Benatar hit it big. Many reviews of female artists then were always compared with Ronstadt. Benatar wasn't saying she had nothing as far as talent, she meant she had nothing outside of her career since that is all Linda lived for in her opinion. Interviewers loved to pit Linda against other female artists. Comments that may have seemed negative toward Ronstadt by those other female artists I am sure many times were taken out of context. Making it seem like those other female artists were putting Linda down. I know today, Pat Benatar has only high praise for Linda Ronstadt. Bonnie Raitt was made to look like she was putting Linda down in a couple interviews with Rolling Stone back in the 1970's when, I would venture to guess, Raitt was not. her comments about Linda were taken out of context in my opinion.
