My mom had some of Jean's albums and I played some of them when I was in my teens and no one was around. She was an acquired taste to say the least. I liked her honky-tonk style but didn't much like her voice. Her voice was kind of cold, but that may have had to do with the songs she recorded. My mom had about five of her albums. May have helped if she'd had some additional albums that might have put Shepard in another light.

I actually saw Jean Shepard live at the Grand Ole Opry when it came to Des Moines when I was a kid. I remember nothing about it except, as my first concert, it was amazing to me to see people on stage in person I'd only heard on records and seen on album covers. My mom played a lot of her music when I was younger.
Also at that same show was Kitty Wells. I went up to the stage after her set (no doubt propelled by my mother) and got Kitty's autograph on a match book cover (since lost)!
Shepard had an amazingly strong, clear voice and could yodel like no one else. Admittedly, her vocal strengths sometimes sounded "hard."
Be warned, though: listen to "Dear John" at your own risk. Once that chorus gets into your head (the rest of the song is spoken-word) it won't leave for days. Just typing this has activated that ear worm and I fear I am to be haunted by it for at least the rest of the day.
RIP, Jean.

I was inclined to be a fan of Jean Shepard because I like classic country singers, especially yodelers. As a yodeler-loving child, I always enjoyed watching The Beverly Hillbillies just in hopes of hearing Aunt Pearl yodel. It was at one time hard to find a decent Jean Shepard CD so I opted for the giant Bear Family box set.

When I was just a sprout my conservative Christian (and Republican lol) mother would have us kids help her with the daily housework before we were old enough for school. This was one of the many songs we sang while dusting and polishing the old antique furniture given us by aunt Elsie That may be why I love gospel music but am not a Christian and hate to dust but love to vacuum. Jean is a funny woman.
Words of wisdom from this wonderful woman:RIP darlin!
