I know the plethora of 'non-country' singers is a particular sore point with Erik (and rightly so).. I thought this would be of interest... This from a decidedly NON country singer, who didn't even speak English till she was about 10 years old... and puts Ms. Swift and the whole faux bunch to shame!.. enjoy!.. and she even wrote the damn thing...(warning.. some cussin' at the beginning)

Not only does Regina put Ms. Autotune in a corner, the song kind of reminds me a bit of a punked-up version of "Rocky Top", with a Lone Justice-era Maria McKee vocal...if that makes any sense.
It'll never make it on country radio with a title like that, of course; but who cares?

I get what you are saying Erik...Ms Spektor is an amazing and eclectic talent.. the anti-Taylor Swift, as it were..

What Regina was doing there felt crazily authentic to me, and full throated to boot as well. If one listens to some of Maria's Lone Justice-era recordings or her 1989 song "Drinkin' In My Sunday Dress", that's what Regina's approach sounds and feels like to me. It thus might also make one wonder if Regina is another one of those who counts Linda as an influence. Whether that's true or not, I think this video shows that Regina has the goods, and that means she's got the honesty and the voice to start with; and honesty, as Linda once said in a 1971 interview, is the utmost in art, any art.

Well that was fun, even though I didn't understand most of the words And she's no relation to Phil, fortunately I also found that she was born in Moscow Russia and her music is considered "anti-folk" Yes, she beats Taylor Swift, who sets a fairly low bar when it comes to live singing comparisons And she's spunky, like Linda! ;D

I must be on a different planet. Well, Regina is a very individual artist and not everyone 'gets' her.. I think if you listen to enough of her, you will appreciate her amazing talent.. If not, well then more for me:) She gets to me like no one since Linda and Tift Merritt...

Well that was fun, even though I didn't understand most of the words ;D This is a clearer version (audio) and the words: Was a bright, and sweet, and hot summer day The day I didn't love you anymore Some little cue wound up my poor heart which had stopped As I walked to the grocery store All the people lingered although they didn't know And they smiled at me as I passed 'Cause they've been there before And they've come back again And they always go right back for more Love, love, love You're a whore You're a whore You're a whore Love, love, love, love 'Cause we beat you and mistreat you But time after time You take us back And kiss us hard on the mouth Oh, kiss us hard on the mouth Yeah, yeah, yeah Kiss us hard on the mouth Who-oh-ore Kiss us hard on the mouth Yeah, yeah, yeah Kiss us hard Hard on the mouth Was a bright, and sweet, and hot summer day The day I didn't love you anymore Couldn't see your face Couldn't taste your taste Couldn't hallucinate your embrace All had vanished without a trace Love, love, love You're a whore You're a whore You're a whore Love, love, love, love 'Cause we bruise you and abuse you But time after time You take us back And kiss us hard on the mouth Oh, kiss us hard on the mouth Yeah, yeah, yeah Kiss us hard on the mouth Who-oh-ore Kiss us hard on the mouth Yeah, yeah, yeah Kiss us hard, hard on the mouth Was a bright and sweet and hot summer day The day I didn't love you anymore Some little cue wound up my poor heart which had stopped As I walked to the grocery store All the people lingered although they didn't know And they smiled at me as I passed 'Cause they've been there before And they've come back again And they always run right back for more Love, love, love You're a whore You're a whore You're a whore Love, love, love, love 'Cause we cheat you and mistreat you And beat you and bruise you And use you and abuse you And cruise you and lose you But time after time You take us back into your bed and Kiss us Harder Hard on the mouth Kiss us harder Harder Hard on the mouth Kiss us hard, ha, hard, ha, harder on the mouth Kiss us hard on the mouth Yeah, yeah, yeah Kiss us hard on the mouth Who-oh-ore Kiss us hard on the mouth Yeah, yeah, yeah Kiss us hard Hard On the mouth Read more at www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858638560/1/DESC/#JcHCjvddpuO44stS.99

It kind of occurs to me that this is the kind of song and style, and Regina the kind of singer, that Linda might very well appreciate. Had this song existed in the mid/late 1970s, she herself might very well have done it, as she had done other such women-don't-sing-that kind of songs as "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "Willing."

This may very well be.. I kind of think that Tift Merritt may appreciate her, as Regina somewhat is reminiscent of the classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein whom Tift has appeared with.. In fact, I hope to see Tift this summer, and I may just give her one of Regina's albums as a present!

I think I am on that other plant with ronstadtfanz, don't get it, and I was a big Lone Justice/Maria McKee fan myself.

Bear in mind, that song was a 'one off'.. she never performed in that genre before, much less writing one (which makes it all the more impressive ).. For a more representative sample of her work, check out You Tubes of 'Fidelity'; 'Sampson' 'On the Radio' 'Hotel Song' 'the Calculation (a great one', etc.. we Regina fans are an exclusive lot ..

Like Robert said, this was a one-off thing for Regina--a C&W song with an almost punk-rock attitude, which was kind of what Lone Justice did back in the early-to-mid 80s here in L.A., where Linda and others were extremely supportive. I think the term used for that style back then was "cowpunk". Taylor Swift, it definitely ain't.

She seems to have the knack of singing various styles convincingly... i.e. a 30-40s torch singer:
This is more typical... a song so heartbreaking and gorgeous, critics didn't believe a 21 could write it.. WRONG:

She seems more Laura Nyro "inspired" here. I like this one better.

yeah, Laura Nyro is not a bad comparison... Fiona Apple another perhaps.. though Regina is pretty original... I may put together a primer.. (is that a promise or a threat

Yes, Tori Amos is frequently mentioned as a basis of comparison, I am thinking that Fiona Apple may be closer, although Regina is pretty unique (as are the others )

I don't see her so much a country act tho or appealing to the usual c&w fans. . but the song was fun.

I do not think that ( Taylor Swift ) and the rest here are not that bad. I think Tayloy has gotten better some. There still a lot to improve on but I think she got better. I think Linda would think highly of her. Jessica Simpson's I not a big fan of hers but some of her music is good not bad. The rest you mention here I think will get there. ( IMHO )

After the furor at the 2010 Grammys when it looked like she fell apart alongside Stevie Nicks, I would be extremely reluctant to have her sing with Linda.
I would rather have Linda duet with either one of the following: Trisha Yearwood; Tift Merritt; or Caitlin Rose.
