Thanks for the heads up!
Is this a new interview or a past interview from a previous album tour?
www.bbc.co.uk/radio2
This programme will be available shortly after broadcast
Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt
Johnnie Walker Meets...
Johnnie Walker talks in depth to three of America's greatest singer-songwriters, who between them have sold more than 200 million records, won at least 20 Grammys and can sell out concert halls and arenas in moments.
Emmylou Harris proclaimed "it was a glorious sound" when she first sang with her friend Linda Ronstadt and their "favourite" singer Dolly Parton in 1975 at her house in LA. As you will hear, the harmonies blended as if they had been singing together from birth, creating what they called "the sisterhood of song". Dolly says just hearing the subsequent recordings still gives her chills. Many believe that they created what we now call Americana, with the Trio project.
Johnnie hears about those first meetings and the struggle to get their schedules aligned for two albums (released twelve years apart), plus the fun they had choosing the songs and who would sing them, working in the studio with some amazing musicians and winning awards and critical and audience acclaim, plus their thoughts on the other artists they covered - including Linda Thompson, Randy Newman, the Carter Family and Neil Young.
Trio is the perfect description for their equal and delicately balanced collaboration, as the albums remain their favourite works and are, in their own words, their enduring legacy.

The show does appear to be new. It looks like we have a short time (30 days) to listen once it is aired? I have no idea what time it is in England now. I guess we are well after your time zone. I live in Arizona and half the time I can't figure out what time it is in New York where I was born. Arizona doesn't do daylight savings either which gets confusing. I may have to settle for the rebroadcast.
Hey, it looks like it is next up as Simon Mayo drivetime is on now and is listed just before Johnnie Walker's. What great timing!

At this moment it is 6.01pm in the UK I am listening to it right now. Heart of Gold is currently playing. Interesting talk and LOTS of music (full songs) being played. Some new insights on the Trio project shared by the girls. Each seems to be getting equal time and attention. This really is a wonderful interview. I wonder if there is a way to download it? Looks like it will be a 2 hour show with the Trio. The show began at 11 am in the Phoenix-Tempe-Mesa area of Arizona. Emmy began to talk about the first songs they sang after meeting and I think the first one out of her mouth was the one I wanted so badly to appear on this third album which was When I Stop Dreaming. Sorry ronstadfanaz. NOT on this album either.
Second hour at 12 noon has just begun and it just hit 99 degrees outside. About 20 minutes ago the subject of Linda's "self-deprecation" came up lol. I think Emmy just wants to shake Linda sometimes hehe.
Johnnie asked about the ten year gap between Trio I and Trio II. Dolly stepped up to answer that one lol. The controversy about it all was stopped in its tracks. They ought to rename themselves from TRIO to TEN YEAR. It was about ten years between each segment from the time they met to the first Trio album to the second Trio album to the third Trio album. That's a forty year stretch. Enough to make one want to begin to smoke and drink.
Dolly said there is nothing left in the can. Everything they did is in this package (which isn't true because Linda once said they recorded When I Stop Dreaming...am I bitter? damn right lol)
Emmy said John Starling was very supportive and should be considered the 4th girl in Trio. If I am remembering correctly John was also an MD, a surgeon in the Maryland-DC area who was a founding member of the Seldom Scene. In a bootleg recording Live From McCabes Linda talks fondly of him and how they all slept in his living room while practicing for the upcoming gig at McCabes Guitar Shop which by the way was managed by former Stone Poney Bobby Kimmel.
Oh wow. This just in...Gene Wilder dies at 83. Finally reunited with Gilda Radner.
Some of the songs played: (there is a story to go with each of these songs and how they came about) These aren't in order as I wasn't smart enough to create this post until the first hour was almost over.
Telling Me Lies Heart of Gold Wildflowers You'll Never Be The Sun Rosewood Casket After The Goldrush Feels Like Home Calling My Children Home Do I Ever Cross Your Mind I Feel The Blues Moving In My Blue Tears (my favorite Trio song) Dolly said she wrote this when she was just a little girl. Straighten Up And Fly Right My Dear Companion (Linda's favorite Trio song) Softly And Tenderly (Emmy's favorite Trio song) You Don't Knock When We're Gone Long Gone (last song)
Dedicated to the 4th Trio girl, great musician and songwriter, John Starling. RIP!
Full playlist in order:
The Right Combination Bury Me Beneath The Willow The Pain of Loving You Telling Me Lies Rosewood Casket To Know Him Is to Love Him I've Had Enough You’ll Never Be the Sun Wildflowers Heart Of Gold After the Gold Rush Feels Like Home Calling My Children Home Do I Ever Cross Your Mind I Feel the Blues Movin’ In My Blue Tears Straighten Up And Fly Right My Dear Companion Softly And Tenderly You Don't knock When We’re Gone, Long Gone

I caught the tail end of it. Thanks so much for posting. If a computer savvy person could post the page link so we all can replay it I would sincerely appreciate it. I should of gone back to beginning when I first got the station but I wanted to hear it live and right now I don't see a way of replaying whole thing again but am sure our smart group here will figure it out. thanks much and I really hope this is a big event for them. I hope the album does very well. eddiejinnj

It says you have 29 days to listen and then it must go away. What a shame.

I really enjoyed that. Johnnie Walker is one of our best ever radio presenters and deserves a big thumbs up for this programme. I have never bought any of the Trio albums, not for any reason and Im glad I haven't as I can soon buy the box set with everything on it. I was bowled over by Telling Me Lies which I have not heard before. I would urge anyone reading this thread to have a listen before it disappears.

Are the interviews with Linda current or older? At first I thought it was live but that would have been too difficult to piece that all together live. Most likely done in the past month or two is my best guess. Definitely worth the listen.
I think it may become a podcast. I am hoping someone here can record it and/or give us an idea how to do it. I know Fab is good at that stuff maybe he has an idea.

Finally got a chance to listen to the whole thing-what a great show! I agree with Emmylou, Softly and Tenderly is my new favorite. I had never heard the song before (full disclosure-I'm an old atheist that loves old time church music) I was doing OK till it came to Linda's part at the end the magnificence of her rendering had me, in Linda's words " bawling like a fishwife" If anyone doubts she's the greatest singer of our generation give a listen about 1hr 45min in. it's worth waiting for.
By the way only eight more days till III is released!

As a not so old "agnostic" I agree with MOE. That end bit on Softly and Tenderly is Linda Ronstadt doing things with her gorgeous voice that just leaves me believing. No one can touch her in those moments. Can not wait for the The Complete Collection next week and I will be over the moon seeing her this fall in New York. Thank you

Excellent interview. Some new insights from all of them. I love how Linda refers to Dolly's voice as a kite, such a perfect image.

If Dolly's voice is a kite and Linda's voice is a candy bar, what metaphor would capture Emmy's voice??

I believe Linda described it as "prayerful" as she sings like she is about to be guillotined and she is trying to save her life...and it works!!!

I think she once described it as "cracked crystal". Not bad.

Both are very apt descriptions of Emmy's unique vocal quality. The crystal/kite/candy bar trio has a nice ring to it! It was amusing to hear Dolly's description of Linda's perfectionism and how this could be maddening at times. It's both a blessing and a curse. Perfectionism is basically an unachievable goal, but something we strive for regardless.

While perfectionism is difficult to attain and anxiety producing to those that have it we, the world and fans have benefited greatly from it. Linda has always given us the best musicians to back her, her best performances and quality recordings because she knew either consciously or subconsciously that when she is gone we will have the absolute best to remember her by. That is quite a legacy.

This may be what we can expect on the album. Linda's solo is at 3:55. This song is also available on youtube without the verse on which Dolly sings. I was mesmerized by the song as sung just by Emmy and Linda. One thing I thought upon hearing Linda's voice was that her voice had changed somehow. She didn't sound like she had in the past and I thought her voice sounded more fuller, with more color (if that's the right word) on her vocal and maybe just a little lower on her vocal range. Linda being Linda, I couldn't help but be knocked out and wished she had sung the whole song instead of just a part of it. I got goosebumps the first time I heard Linda's vocal. Emmy's vocal was ok but Linda's vocal truly seemed like a spiritual moment for her.
