Has anyone had experience with an alternative to Microsoft Office which is way overpriced?
I need to find something soon but am hoping for something that will allow me to use my archived word, excel, etc.

I can help you there; I use this free program and it does an excellent job. It has no problem even viewing complex Word, Excel or Power Point files. www.freeoffice.com/en/You don't have to take only my word for it; a review: tinyurl.com/h2zpt7h

At work I used MS Office products at the expert level. On my computers at home, I installed the Free Sun/Oracle/Apache version of Open Office, which I still use today, although it's no longer the best alternative to MS Office products, they work for me every time. Here is an interesting article about Open Office vs Libre Office, a newer version. As you can see, there are many free "functional" alternatives to MS Office.

Does freeoffice and openoffice allow for use of archived material that is saved in the word or excel formats? I would hate to lose access to those things plus photos or any other stuff I have saved on my windows 7.
I didn't want to upgrade to windows 10 and now it is too late without paying a steep fee. This software is getting to be more expensive than the computer itself and the support isn't so great. I am guessing there is no support from freeoffice or anything that is free.

I know Open Office will open--and even save docs with Windows extensions (.doc, .xml etc...). That was the reason I installed it, so I could work on docs and spreadsheets between home and work. I never had any problems.
Reading about Free Office it looks like their product does the same. That review link shows the pro's and con's of Free Office vs Libre Office. If I ever decide to upgrade from Open Office, it will be difficult to choose between those two...
If I were you, I would not download Open Office, I have the feeling it will be discontinued soon, and replaced with Libre Office.
Happy Choosing!

Since I have no money for now I think I will go with free office. I will try it out this weekend and hopefully I won't screw anything up.
Thanks both for your help!

I have never had a problem with opening a Microsoft file with Free Office.

Well I did it. Soon as I did I got an email from Microsoft saying they were sorry to see me go. (yeah right $$$$)
I am still trying to figure things out as their applications operate slightly differently. But hey, it's FREE! A strange dark sedan did appear parked in front of my house just afterwards but was gone by midnight which is when Office 365 officially expired.

Sorry for the delayed response; I find that the interface with the full menus and buttons is similar to Microsoft Office circa 2003 (their best IMO) before that &***)ing ribbon. I think you'll easily adapt to it.

I like to multi-task and find I cannot do it with this program. I am sure there must be a way but I just can't get two open without closing one of them.

Sorry for the delay I was away. I have not done this for some time, but one (clunky) way is to open your document, open a new one, and copy what you want into the new one. You can then tile it any way you want under the Window menu. BTW there is a full pdf manual under the help command, which is more than Microsoft has you pay for..

Pretty accurate summary of the programs; I can vouch for Free Office and Open Office. I found Google docs slower and less user friendly, though the price is right, and it has lots of fans....

Have you ever had a situation where a pop up appears and says YOUR DROPBOX IS FULL?
Now things are slowing down. I have never had this happen on any other computer. I even use an external hard drive to store everything so not sure what is going on. And now my avatar has disappeared at least for now. hmmm.

(Obviously, this is an issue with the dropbox service and not a Microsoft Office product or equivalent). This could be either an issue with the dropbox cache, low disk space or even sharing someone else's dropbox, which counts against your quota... www.dropbox.com/help/328
