Wow! A little different in phrasing and harmonic treatment-what a treasure-this and others like it is why we need a live album. It's obvious Linda doesn't think much of Smokey.... HA! Just complete admiration (and perhaps just a touch of lust) It must have been a thrill for her, knowing her feelings for him, to hear him call her his "close friend".

The end of this show is not on this video, where Linda, Smokey and Boy George all sing together .... Think it's Signed Sealed and Delivered ??

I'll say "wow" too! Loved the phrasing, and her rather assertive delivery, on What's New. And her fetching eye flicks at Smoky when she sings "I know I've made a few." And that genuine moment between them when she sings to him "you've made mistakes too."
Funny, I've always had some reluctance about her performance on the Motown special, and I still get the feeling that she's self-conscious about the camera, but the more times I see it the more I appreciate what a fabulous performance it was, despite the minor snits about the camera's effect on her when she's aware of it.
I watched the special when it was on and only remember the Robinson duets, not What's New. Was that part of the original broadcast? I love it, but it does seem out of place in this context so I would understand why it was cut from the program, if it was. But what a gem to have buried!

I have seen the vid posted. Not sure if the one we discussed was just the Robinson duet. I am not sure I have seen THIS "What's New" and also her singing with Boy George. We all talked about this vid and how good it was and how her bangs were hiding her eyes. Maybe she wanted it that way as a sort of defensive shield for her nervousness on stage. eddiejinnj

I never saw the Motown Review, hence (partly) my confusion.

Mark, this is the one I mentioned in the other thread! thanks for finding, a unique performance...she never sang What's new like that again as far as I know. Now we just have to find La Boheme and her performance with Philip Glass at Avery Fisher Hall and I'll be in Nirvana!!!

Would love to have a recording of Linda w/ the SF Orchestra narrating Peter and the Wolf (that Captain Kangaroo classic from our (my) childhood)

I found your links to the other decades, great stuff? Did you have any lists from 2000 on?

Yes, I was watching the Cinemax Album Flash for the What's New release and your name was in the closing credits. When did you stop working with Linda on her wardrobe?

I love that more intimate version of "What's New?". This is a slightly softer version of "Desperado" with Nelson Riddle Video not available in the US?! Its on "Lush Live" CD, the legit album to that radio broadcast concert. You can buy it on Amazon. That CD also has "Keeping Out of Mischief", worth getting. strangerintown.podcastpeople.com/posts/58249

The weird thing I had some Linda vids on on youtube yesterday (that not weird but common) and I left room and the Desperado vid at the end of a Linda Nelson concert was on. She nailed it. I am sorry you were not able to display it, heartbreaker. Maybe there is another copy we can borrow for on here? eddiejinnj

Hi Genevieve: I saw some of your podcast with Maria Muldaur and it was excellent but I had computer problems that day and I don't recall seeing the whole thing. I was on in my partner's name on fb. I mentioned what my name was (and that I was on my partner's acct) and also I am the moderator for our discussion forum that Tony started. I had to sneak in a plug for the best Linda discussion forum in the world!!!! :-). I hope you are well. Please don't be a stranger here. If you talk to Linda tell her Eddie said hello and I had given her a Peace sign pendant. Thanks!!! eddiejinnj

Late to the party.... as ever :-) It is a fabulous version of What's New... shame about the glitches in the video throwing it out... it would be lovely to hear it pristine... made me want to listen to the Marian McPartland set which is thankfully just about perfect (to my ears). Okay, I'm out on a limb here which I know won't go down well, but I've always found Ooh Baby Baby the most uninspiring, repetitive and weak song... I know that flies in the face of most people here, and I do love Smokey's music...and I'm going to be even more unpopular now because although his voice is perfect (and beyond) in concert...I always find him just a wee bit creepy... I can't really explain that, it's just a feeling. Runs away quickly :-)

I think "Tracks of My Tears" is the weaker of Linda's 2 Smokey covers. "Ooh Baby Baby" is great though, one of my earliest Linda favourites & makes LITUSA so great along with "Blue Bayou" and "Old Paint".

Heart, your statement not clear if you saying that BB and OP were on LITUSA, they weren't. They on SD. They both great songs but I would give the bigger nod to Tracks. I remember right before discovering "Linda" that I heard Tracks on the radio and thinking I liked the freshness of the vocals. eddiejinnj

Simple Man, Simple Dream is my personal favorite, and my vote goes to JD Souther as her best duet partner. I would also give high praise to Kosh for the art direction on Simple Dreams. Every photo is a work of art in a beautifully, subtle way.

That's the trouble with personal playlists, they wrongly re-educate you. LITUSA should have had "Tumbling Dice" & SD "Ooh Baby Baby!".
