I was just reading "The Mineralogical Record" an expensive mag I got at a thrift shop for under a buck and I happened to see some obits and James Horner was one (he looks like Kevin Kline in the pic). I know James to be a superb scorer and cowriter of "Somewhere Out There." It was "Song of the Year" at the Grammys. It was nominated for but lost the Oscar. It would have put an Oscar in Linda's column. The article says Horner was 61. If this was posted my apologies. I know if it wasn't Linda fans would appreciate the knowledge. RIP James!!!!! eddiejinnj

Yes, he passed away in a plane crash in the mountains of Ventura County here in Southern California on June 22nd of last year.
His film scoring credits, besides AN AMERICAN TAIL and AN AMERICAN TAIL: FIEVEL GOES WEST, include the following:
STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK BRAINSTORM ALIENS DEEP IMPACT AVATAR TITANIC SOUTHPAW PATRIOT GAMES CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER COCOON APOLLO 13
This is an excerpt from one of the last scores he did, for the 2015 film THE 33 (about the plight of 33 Chilean miners trapped inside a collapsed gold mine for ten weeks in the summer and fall of 2010):

eddie, no big deal, but I had posted it back in June 2015 when Mr. Horner was killed in the plane crash -- Here is the original thread you likely missed -- Original James Horner Obituary Thread

Yes, it was a terrible loss. And I think it also should be a reminder as to just how big a deal composers of film music are and really have always been. We still have John Williams, of course; and Thomas Newman (he of that great Newman film scoring dynasty that includes his cousin Randy), who did the score for Spielberg's film BRIDGE OF SPIES in 2015. But almost all of the great ones are gone now, and this includes Horner too.
