Erik has understandably mentioned that Tift Merritt is his choice of favorite female singer of this century. I wanted to wish a Happy Birthday to my favorite songwriter of the century, the multi talented Regina Spektor. For those wishing more of their music than pop tarts whining about breakups or hookups, here is an epic tale of the paranoia and fear of a turbulent period in European history:
A cautionary tale of a dystopian future worthy of Orwell:
Regina can of course also do smaller scale tales of lost love of regret as in this modern classic :

I really have to hand it to Regina--she is completely authentic in a way that I think Linda would heartily approve of (as Linda once said, you don't have to be original, just authentic). And how very simple and direct it all is, just her and her piano--what a revolutionary concept.
It's a real shame, however, that she, like Tift, can't get arrested on corporate radio. I know it shouldn't really matter, but it does show how downhill music has gone since the day when Linda and Joni Mitchell had the floor.

Tift still is way underappreciated and publicized. Regina has fortunately had enough success (over a million albums sold, and last 2 albums reached #3 on Billboard) so that she can work on her new album due this year, and also care for a new son born last year.

Yes, very talented. She reminds me a bit physically of Gillian Anderson from the X Files.....one of my FAVORITES!

Bjork and PJ Harvey have my vote, neither one of whom will get much love here, I'm sure. I guess that I'm the weirdo of the forum in more ways than one. And Lucinda Williams is another one I rate very hghly. But there's no denying that both Tift and Regina are very talented ladies as well. happy birthday Regina.

I am getting more familiar with Bjork and PJ, and respect them both for their originality (Bjork was an admitted influence on Regina). I also look forward to becoming more knowledgeable about Lucinda.
