Listening to it now. "Cry Till My Tears Won't Dry" -PHENOMENAL.

I have often said this: We Ran is probably the most criminally underappreciated (at least by the public) album of Linda's entire body of work, period, not just the 1990s. Given that she was not in very good health then either (battling Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and having to take cortisone treatments for that ailment that made her look quite heavy), her voice was still in incredibly great shape.
"Cry 'Til My Tears Run Dry" is one of the many great tracks on that album (though I know that "Give Me A Reason" is probably nobody's favorite; it's not really mine either); and it also shows a fair amount of diversity, including R&B ("Ruler Of My Heart"); Mexican-tinged folk-pop ("Dreams Of The San Joaquin"); Springsteen ("If I Should Fall Behind"); Dylan ("Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues"); and C&W-influenced throwbacks ("Heartbreak Kind"; "Icy Blue Heart"). It's really sad that it sold so poorly because Linda just wasn't up health-wise for promoting or touring for it (although it got largely favorable reviews from critics, including a substantial rave in Rolling Stone), because I think it is right up there not only with Linda's own best albums, but one of the best albums of the 1990s.

Some very fine cuts for sure. I even like the oft maligned 'Give Me a Reason', it has a catchy beat and I like the way Linda sings 'toooouur around the world.' Ruler of My Heart sounds like a 40s saloon classic, 'If I should fall behind' beats the original easily, IMO and 'Heartbreak Kind' should have a been a country hit if it had been marketed properly...

Quote by robertaxel re. "Heartbreak Kind":
It's indeed a great track (my favorite one on the album, as a matter of fact), and yes it should have been marketed to country radio. Whether country radio would have played it (since they shafted "Walk On", from Feels Like Home, three years earlier) is another matter, in my opinion. But the Telecaster guitar work (and harmony vocal) from one of Linda's favorite musicians, Bernie Leadon, is what gives it that throwback C&W/rock twang.

I totally agree. WMG totally dropped the ball on this on. Unfortunately Linda was not able or willing to tour, which accounts for some of the neglect as well.

Amazing album! Just for the record my favorite is "Icy Blue Heart" love the falsetto and all the "cold" imagery reminds me of my college days in Upper Peninsula Michigan. Really did see the northern lights dancing in the air!

To me the best songs are Cry til' my tears run Dry , Icy Blue Heart and I love the song Damage .It is so different but I love it.Also love We Ran and Heartbreak Kind a couple songs I am not into so much,so on my IPod I just have my favorites from the CD. Her singing was spot on ,I can only imagine what it would have been like if her health was better .

Glad everyone emphasized We Ran. Listened to some of it on YouTube after reading the comments. I never paid any attention to it before. Was I sleeping? Wonderful music and I just ordered the CD on Amazon.

Cry Til My Tears Run Dry is a powerhouse, I've grown to love Give Me A Reason for all its quirky charm. I can hear a little tiredness in her voice at times but overall it's great.

I absolutely loved listening to We Ran, I wore that CD out just like all the others. I never paid any attention to Linda's album sales or charts until I joined this forum, and was shocked to learn We Ran was not platinum, and indeed none of her albums from 1990 to 2004 went platinum.
Very sad indeed!

Yes, it got a lot of good reviews, and was an extremely well-made album; and when it came out, I was hoping it would bring Linda back onto the radio. But it never happened. Linda simply wasn't in the best of health to be able to do any promotion or touring.
But there was another element at play for the album's commercial failure. By that time (1998), I don't think there was anyone left in the Warner/Elektra/Asylum hierarchy who even cared that she still had a name; and they didn't feel like she was still worth it. That was a very shabby thing to do to her (IMHO).

Linda produced fantastic work after CLARHLTW, criminally ignored by the buying public ... I'm really quite saddened. Perhaps if she had followed CLAR with Winter Light or We Ran they would have been smash hits. Her so called "fans" really dropped her when she came back with Mas Canciones and Frenesi - strange because her voice is phenomenal in this period, strong and powerful. I didn't appreciate this type of music until Linda introduced me to it, shame that others could not be so open to accept a new musical influence in their lives.

I think the problem with albums like Mas Canciones and Frenesi is that it seemed to splinter and fracture her audience into people who like one aspect of her style but not necessarily another, resulting in niche audiences that are much smaller in number than what she might have had had she stayed in straightforward pop/rock. It's not, in my opinion, a case of "fair weather fans" just flying away.
Still, Winter Light and We Ran are great albums; and the fact that neither of them sold all that well is a terrible tragedy.

I love the first canciones album. How does the second one compare? What kind of material is on Frenesi?

Mas Canciones is mostly a continuation of its predecessor (how it compares is really up to the listener [IMHO]); while Frenesi is an album of Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz standards.

Got my We Ran CD today. What great music. Really is sad LR's music in the 90's and 2000's was overlooked. It's also sad her record company didn't promote them to max. Why didn't they? Was she old news by then.

It certainly seems that way, at least to me. As I've said, by 1998, I don't think there was anyone left at Elektra that really cared anymore that she still had a name. They were becoming a largely R&B label by that time, and they just didn't see her having any future. Needless to say, whatever they may have thought about her or her rampant "eclecticmania" (as she calls it), I think the Elektra higher-ups really treated her shabbily in those last few years.

Love her version of Tom Thumb's Blues on that record. The way she sings that verse about "my best friend, the doctor..." slays me.

San Joachim is my favourite song, Linda sings it with such wistful sadness. Its like her "La Orilla de un Palomar" on "San Patricio" album, and other later similar songs.
After "Winter Light" album, Linda's singing does sound more insightful or perhaps retrospective, somber in mood more easily, but in a graceful way. I don't know if it was intentional or reflected her personality more.
"We Ran" as a whole has a gloomy feel, panache plentiful, but still very Linda, one for her fans or people wanting easy listening with some poignancy. Good adult contemporary.
