Decided to make this a separate post. On CBS' broadcast of The Kennedy Center Honors, host Stephen Colbert brought up the fact that The Eagles were to have been honored at this year's ceremony. Due to Glenn Frey's health issues, The Eagles will be honored at next year's ceremony. However, Colbert said Miranda Lambert would sing "Desperado" in tribute to The Eagles. Let the comparisons begin --

There are Miranda Lambert fans out there, but I'm sorry, I'm not one of them. I really didn't care for her performance of it.

Sorry, no comparison. Where's the emotion? No connection with the lyrics--she smiled through almost the whole song. Nobody comes close to Linda's classic rendition of that powerful song.

A bit mediocre imo. Not truly bad, but it lacks character. What a good artist needs is something that sets him or her apart from all others. That's what lacking here. This could have been anyone that can carry a tune.

I agree.. not too mention Linda has a much better voice.. clearer and stronger. I wonder what is wrong with Glenn. Hope it isnt serious

I heard he's having some type of intestinal surgery, related to his past history of drug abuse, etc. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

I think Glenn Frey's issue was diverticulitis.
But back to the comparisons--I think the difference between Linda's and Miranda's versions is that Linda lived and experienced a rustic and restless way of life as a youngster growing up amidst the sagebrush and Saguaro cacti of her native Arizona, and you can feel it in her performance. Miranda's is just...well, rote (IMHO).

I wouldn't say Lindas version is better because her upbringing was more rustic.. geographically, their upbringing is probably similar.. the southwest.. I think Linda has a deeper understanding, something she was born with of how to interpret a song and make it her own and most times better than an original... not very many can do what she did on a successful level.. Linda did this with some non rural inspired r&b classics .. you're no good and heatwave...and I think she's a much better singer than Lambert is.

I listened to all of the non Linda versions. None of them can touch Linda's version. This shows Linda was in the same league as Whitney, Mariah, Barbara, etc. Only they can hit the high note at the end like Linda! No offense but Tori Amos sings like she is ill !

But there are innumerable singers that can hit high notes. Nothing special to me.
I can't really think of any singers that are in Linda's class.

I guess in earthly technicl terms.. for me and only me.. it has to do with her tone, clarity and the fact she doesn't over sing a million notes like many others do.. I find that a very unattractive vocal quality.. and the rest of it is probably unearthly which I can't explain lol Barbra S. is pretty close IMO gorgeous voice.

Yes, Streisand is great also-- almost in a class by herself also-- her class is in a different room than Linda's. But Linda's is a lonely room, as she is in a class by herself. I see a few other people in Streisand's room. One of them is Linda Eder.

My favorite musical quote is from Ravel:
Music, I feel, must be emotional first and intellectual second. ~Maurice Ravel
I believe that is what sets Linda apart from any other singer, and why millions love to listen to her singing--no matter what genre she chose. She was emotional and technical perfection, always.
But I appreciate that Miranda didn't try to emulate Linda on that song, and she made it her own. Still, there is no comparison in the vocal performance.
Linda's singing will always be a tough act to follow.

Even among Linda's different video versions one stands out as best and that is the one with EAGLES.
