Definitely a sad thing to happen, especially in terms of the New Orleans R&B music scene. He was definitely a legend.

He wrote some great songs.
Including "Going Down Slowly" a song the Pointer Sisters recorded on their 3rd studio album, "Steppin'". At almost 8 minutes, the Sisters created an extended funk masterpiece that was and still is sadly ignored, showcasing, as it does, one of the greatest overlooked rock vocals of the '70s by Ruth Pointer.

Lowell George covered his song What Do You Want The Girl To Do on his solo album Thanks I'll Eat It Here
Boz Scaggs' version on his Silk Degrees album maybe be more widely known ... but here is Lowell's version
