Two years ago, I asked this sort of question about Daft Punk's "Get Lucky"; and this time I'm asking everyone's opinions on this particular song/artist: "Ex's And Oh's" by Elle King. She sounds like a modern-day version of rockabilly pioneer Wanda Jackson, according to a lot of people, especially on this record:

She has a little bit of the Wanda thing going on, kind of a 'mini-growl' thing going on... Interesting to see how her career develops...

Hear Wanda in the vocal...hear Jim Croce or the Small Faces'"Itchycoo Park" in the music. Even a little Elvis. This girl is good and could have a big career if she is managed right and the record company does right by her.

The really funny thing is that Elle happens to be a mere five months older than one Taylor Allison Swift, so sounding, even if unintentionally, like Wanda Jackson in her "Fujiyama Mama"/"Let's Have A Party" salad days is quite remarkable (IMHO).

More of a Brenda Lee meets Nancy Sinatra sound to me. Wasn't expecting to like her so I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks. 3 thumbs up

This is why she reminded me of Brenda Lee:
Not only her voice but her style is very similar.

She's really good Erik.. to me she's got that Lindi Ortega vibe. My 21 yr old niece loves Lindi too.. She's got a pretty face too. kind of looks like young Debbie Harry....

Quote by Dianna:
Yes, Elle is, how shall we say, "retro"; it may be new, but it sure sounds like something that could have been done in the late 1950s and early 1960s, with both the influences of Wanda and, as others have said, Brenda Lee. The same goes for Lindi, of course, though I think her "retro" influences encompass everything from Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard through Linda and Emmylou.

Who is Lindi? I must have missed that one somehow. Elle is very refreshing to me. Looks wise she reminds me of Eva Cassidy, sings like Brenda Lee and is as humorous as Lucille Ball yet she manages to be an original. Top rate in my opinion. Hopefully not just a flash in the pan. Dare I say she has a grown up HoneyBooBoo humor going on?

I'm surprised an artist like Lindi O or this young lady, Elle hasn't made it big mainstream wise. There are ALOT of people young and older who listen to retro music the rockabilly- psychobilly people.. I mean it's great they like Johnny Cash and the other older outlaws or Wanda Jackson but these 2 girls are pretty good. I'm sure there are more artists out there who are legitimate.. One of them needs a breakout song because to me, this genre has been underground for too long.

Quote by Goldie re. Lindi Ortega:
I did write about Lindi in an earlier post in this section; just scroll down. She is actually Canadian by birth (born in Toronto in 1980), but I believe her father (like Linda's) was born in Mexico, hence the Hispanic surname.
Quote by Dianna:
It is a shame that Lindi, even after thirteen years, isn't a bigger name than she is right now, but I don't know that we'd have as refreshing an approach to this kind of psychobilly style if she were on a major label, especially in Nashville. She deserves to be much better known, but at what price?
As for Elle--well, it's just one hit for now. But depending on how well she treads that fine line between art and commerce, she could have a fairly good career. I'd be curious, though, to know how much of the current radio audience really knows about that particular style on "Ex's And Oh's", and how much it is rooted in styles that are close to six decades old (YIPE!!).

Well you know it kind of reminds me of The Stray Cats back in the early 80's. They were all over MTV and top 40 or rock radio and not country. This is what I'm hoping will happen to a newer rockabilly artist like Lindi. I don't see her or Elle on the CMA awards, the closest would be somebody like Kacey Musgraves.

Quote by Dianna:
Yes, the Stray Cats were very unique in the early MTV era with their hard-driving rockabilly style. In terms of what Lindi or Elle could do, I do agree that it's wholly unlikely they'd even get a place at any Nashville-slanted awards table, as, apart from maybe Kacey, any female artist whose last name isn't Underwood or Lambert seemingly has been thrown under the moving Silver Eagle bus that is bro-country.
