Linda did say more than once in the early days she was trying to mimic Joan Baez. She has even done several of the same songs like Baby You've Been On My Mind, Rambler Gambler, etc.

Nope, different one. Remember that when Linda did "Hey Good Lookin'" with Hanna and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, it was in 1974; and he had to have been married to somebody else. Matraca wasn't quite yet eleven years old at the time.

Some here have compared Linda to Elvis.. Linda being the female Elvis. I have to disagree..other than country rock or rockabilly songs. I don't see it at all.. Elvis was very flamboyant and over the top. I will agree that there is only 1 Linda and 1 Elvis. but if I would compare IMO Cher is a lot more similar in sound and flash to Elvis than Linda is to Elvis..

Quote by Dianna:
I think the big similarity they have is the ability to combine country, R&B, rock and roll, and jazz (yes, even Elvis did jazz--1966's "Frankie And Johnny", anyone?) throughout their careers, and the fact that both of them have very big voices (not many people realized just how big Elvis' vocal range really was). The only real difference is that Elvis, after that first Las Vegas appearance in 1969, went for flamboyance onstage; and Linda never really did. But the similarities do continue in the recording studio, as each was very good about knowing what they were after.
Back to the artists that either are similar to Linda or that Linda influenced:
There is also Terri Clark, the Canadian-born country singer who has covered both "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "Love Is A Rose." I'm still not terribly wild about her twang, which I still think is a bit much; but then again, I have heard much worse, so I'm letting that pass. At least her voice isn't Autotuned.

Lots of similarities also between Linda and Dusty Springfield.
Both recorded Heatwave, Silver Threads, Anyone Who Had A Heart, Lose Again, I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, Oh No Not My Baby, etc. Both have wonderful distinctive voices. Dusty was so wonderful. Very sad she left so young.

Damien, as you can see there are lots of other artists who are similar to Linda.. BUT there is only 1 Linda.. you can also check out if you haven't already.. K.D. Lang, Kathy Mattea, Nicolette Larson, Karla Bonoff (her version of The first Noel sounds very similar to "the lighter-softer Linda) Also..as others mentioned Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood. I would also add Carrie Underwood to the list. she can belt very much like Linda..

Thanks for posting the concert clip of Valerie, Justaguest. It was great to see Valerie perform live from that time period. Awesome. There are other clips and the entire concert they are from on YouTube.
Just a Stone's Throw Away was a big hit among my friends in college in Iowa City when it came out. We played it constantly. I still play it to this day.
An immense -- and real -- talent.

Speaking of Just a Stone's Throw Away, one thing that has always flummoxed me is that I have never been able to understand a line of the lyric as sung by Carter, when she sings "it took the worst_____to get the best of me. What is she singing in the blank? Anyone know?
I watched the video from the '76 concert and, just at the moment when I was hoping to read her lips (she gave it the same reading as on the album) and perhaps finally solve the mystery, the camera cut to the neck of a guitar that blocked her mouth. Dang!

Dang! Bummer. I`ve never known what that line was either and a net search doesn`t turn up any lyrics for it. I have always assumed though that it was some place name. Like `it took the worst of Memphis to get the best of me`. Except that it isn`t Memphis of course. It sounds something like `Sonola' to me. I love her The Way It Is album as well. Used to have Wild Child too but never really liked it so much. Compared to the first album it sounded sort of generic or something. This is the allmusic review of Stone`s Throw. Valerie Carter's first full-length solo album continued her musical involvement with Lowell George and the members of Little Feat, which had begun three years earlier when she was a member of the band Howdy Moon. "Just a Stone's Throw Away" also featured a stellar cast of other musicians, including Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and John Hall. The album is at once funky and folksy, blending a variety of styles, from the haunting acoustic sounds of "Face of Appalachia" to the jazzy blues of "Back to Blue Some More." "Ooh Child" was featured very effectively at the end of the 1979 teen rebellion movie Over the Edge, while the title song is another great representation of the writing talents of Barbara Keith, an overlooked 1970s singer/songwriter whose self-titled 1972 album is worth seeking out.

Linda has been my favorite singer since 1976, and only twice in that time have I mistaken someone else's voice for hers. One I no longer remember, and the other was Jennifer warnes on the "Right Time of the Night" album. But I don't recall finding their voices to sound the same after that. Warnes sounded like no one other than herself on FBR, for example.

Damien!!
Your a Mariah afficiando and you just discovered Mamacita Linda!!! Loves it....I'm the same..in reverse...only I discovered MC along time ago....
Have to check this REn you speak of,,,never heard of her....
As a vocalist myself,,,[coached by BOTH Ronstadt and Carey vocal producers] who struggled for years with controlling my big voice due to two separate accident-injuries, one to my jaw from orthodontic "headgear" and my ribs (the 2 that float in the back-pool injury swimming) that I had no clue were the reason for my vocal problems (recently treated/fixed)....I truly developed a real critical ear for vocals,,,I'd have to say that K.D. Lang overall...is the closest we'll EVER have, IMHO, as to Linda herself...NO ONE can replace Mamacita!!! Or MC!!!
But I'm gonna tribute both of 'em!!ahhahah!!!!

Jul 27, 2015 13:39:08 GMT -7 Damien said: ………… As far as singing style goes, there is only Ren Harvieu that I find there are some similarites, mainly the power and the old-fashioned style of singing, but I don't think Linda is one of her influences. If anyone was going to cover the outstanding vocal abilites shown by Linda is songs such as 'Long Long Time,' 'Faithless Love' or 'The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress' (just to name a few) I would say it should be Ren Harvieu. Her album Through The Night was the best album of 2012 for me, nothing else came close. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren_HarvieuWOW!!! so I just discovered "Ren" Linda is an influence...she has pics of her, large ones, on her tumblr I can hear early Linda absolutely Gorgeous...so RETRO!!! like a liz taylor/lauren bacall her vocals....very ORIGINAL...she's just getting going.....more time and she'll be belting to the rafters ...hahah FANtastic...Lucky Lucky girl WHAT sounds the best?? The fact SHE is writing her own stuff@@@ apparently it will sound way different,,,i.e. no orchestration etc., THank you for sharing about her

What I've heard so far, sounds promising. She has a unique singing style, even though you can see her influences (among them I would say Amy Winehouse and Linda). I looked up her bio and today happens to be her birthday!

Another artist with a fair amount of Linda's musical adventurousness (even though she really doesn't sound too much like her vocal-wise) is Lindi Ortega, whom I have only heard about the last couple of years despite the fact that she's been recording for as long as Tift Merritt. She's Canadian by birth (born in Toronto in May 1980), but just by her surname she has some Hispanic blood in her DNA; and musically, Linda is one of her influences. Her new album Faded Gloryville includes a lot of different styles of C&W-influenced stuff, from rockabilly to Bakersfield to Linda/Emmylou, and Lone Justice, as well as a version (inspired by Nina Simone's recording) of the Bee Gees' much-covered 1967 hit "To Love Somebody".

There's also Nashville songwriter/singer Matraca Berg, whose husband is Jeff Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (and was also a member of Linda's Corvettes in 1968-69). It is said that, when Linda's version of her 1990 song "Walk On" was about to come out, she had asked the friends in the room she was listening to in to keep silent. Matraca was thrilled to have had a song of hers recorded by one of her childhood heroes. Here's Matraca with another song that Linda probably could have done (also from 1990), "The Things You Left Undone": I'm seeing, hearing and feeling a lot of Amy Grant and Nicolette Larson in this video, not Linda.

If somebody showed me that pic of Lindi (without her name on the cover), I would swear that it was Gwen Stefani with long brown hair. Lindi is a cool name. What about the name Linder (what Janice on the Muppets called Linda)? I wonder if we will hear from Miss Piggy that Linda was partially to blame for her breakup with Kermit. I hear he is dating a new "Muppet" so maybe Linder is off the hook lol!!!! Such cartoon drama!!! eddiejinnj
