tpc.googlesyndication.com/simgad/5419129557862839615 not sure if they put it up there as I bought it before like you tube and amazon does based on viewing/buying but why would they since I already purchased this. it is a nice ad for Linda's latest collection. it was at the top of a howell, nj site (not my home town but was checking out a headline re:nj and it took me to this howell site and the ad was there). eddiejinnj

I haven't bought any music in at least 15 years, have an old boom box if by chance I ever listen to a cd and found an under the counter radio with a cd player at Goodwill. Listen to other music on youtube as I like to compile playlists of stuff I enjoy. It isn't that I don't like music but I have to put my money towards some other very important life or death endeavors.

I still collect CDs though I have limited myself to a couple of handfuls of selected artists and classical music. Am getting rid of some of my old LPs though, and had the great pleasure of getting my youngest daughter interested in some of them – LR’s Greatest Hits among other things.

Erik, can you tell me/us if this album made another week on the country chart. I know it was at 35 one week like a month ago. Wanted to followup so as not to seem faddish on the album. Meaning it's around so many weeks and then off the radar. Just paraphrasing Linda when she always discussed how music is almost disposable for that reason. Even in the recent radio program she discusses how people are drawn to the faddish music vs other kinds they may not know they need. Anyway, was there a second week on the country charts for this compilation? Thanks!!! eddiejinnj

Quote b eddieinnj:
Thus far, and this is checking on the Billboard Magazine site, it got up as high as #32 on their C&W album chart (on September 12th), but nothing that I could see on either the overall Top 200 Album Chart or even their Catalog Albums listings.

so if I was correct and you said it was at 35 one week and then went to 32, it must have been on the chart at least 2 weeks? not bad. eddiejinnj

It is confusing I looked up her hx of country albums. It listed this one for sept.12, 2015 2x. one said that it was number 32 previous week 32 2 weeks on chart and number 32 1 week on the chart. Both the same date. eddiejinnj

Just got my copy and have to say I love it.
The sound is great. The songs have never sounded better, with Different Drum receiving an especially fine upgrade. My plan is to delete every song I have in iTunes that's on this compilation and replace it with these versions (uncompressed, of course).
Sure, I could quibble about some of the song choices at the price of others, the lack of standards or mariachi, nothing from We Ran, and that five more songs could have been added to each CD. But I'll let that go.
Still, it's great to have some unusual suspects (Sometimes You Just Can't Win, I Never Will Marry, etc.) in the track listings along the the usual ones. As a collection of songs representing Linda's amazing pop/rock/country majesty, these two CDs do her justice.
Listening to each CD start to finish is a lot of fun, sort of like a DJ playing Linda -- you are not in control, and the songs always sound different when played out of context of either the album they came from or the playlists you've made. You come away with an appreciation (or renewed appreciation for most of us here) for the sheer brilliance of Linda's eclecticism, to say nothing of her power as a vocalist (and picker of great songs).
Disc One's move from the strutting rock of Tumbling Dice to the delicate, mournful country-folk of I Never Will Marry is especially illuminating.

It also helps, ironically, that they were on the same single, with "Tumbling Dice" as the A-side, and "I Never Will Marry" as the B-side. "Tumbling Dice" got up to #32 on the Hot 100, while "I Never Will Marry" got to #8 on the C&W singles chart. Friends, that would never happen in today's era of half-a**ed teen-pop and bro-country.

I thought her version of Dice charted higher than 32 but I guess not.. That said, I wish she never recorded that one. Hers can't hold a candle to the Stones version - I can't listen to it.

wow, rumba. life is perception but I always thought that the stones did a really bad recording of that song. it is very tinny and you can't really hear mick well. Like the rolling stone reviewer said Linda's version "stomps all over the stone's version" Both Tumbling dice and pp pitiful me both chartest highest in the 30's. off simple dreams, she had a number 3, a number 5, a number 6o r 8 country song and the 2 songs aforementioned in the 30's. 5 of the 10 songs were singles off that album. it was the biggest selling album by a solo act for the year. eddiejinnj

I find it almost impossible to believe though that Rolling Stone said her version stomps all over the Stones. Where did you see that?

I prefer Linda's version to The Stones. I just like her singing voice for the most part if I had to choose... and the other reason I can only make out a few words when Mick sang it. I'd sing along but only knew a few of the lines. got to roll me.. or sixes and sevens ect..most of it I just mumble along

Next thing you know someone is going to say they prefer Linda's version of Poor Poor Pitiful Me to Zevon's. That would be true madness. : )

I think I favor all of Linda's cover songs over the originals. She improves them vocally and always uses the best musicians. Most people wouldn't even know Zevon's version of Linda's covers. She rarely if ever covered a popular song that was less than 15 years old and that is a generation away musically. It's just a mad mad mad mad mad world!

While we are on a "who's version is better" kick, I read somewhere that Elvis Costello is coming out with an autobiography. Although it would be interesting to see any Linda references (they did, as all here know, have a bit of history back in the day, with Elvis disparaging Linda for her covers while he raked in the royalties.) Since I'm not a very big fan of E.C. I wouldn't buy the book for a paragraph or less about Linda but if anyone is or does (a fan, buy the book) I wonder if and what he says. If all else fails I guess eventually it will show up in public libraries (remember those)

The official review was done oct 20, 1977 by peter herbst, 38 yrs ago today. It does have positive comments on "Tumbling Dice". Did more research and seems to be Robert Christgau that made the "stomp" reference. Erik and Tony from our great forum know about it too. eddiejinnj

Yes, and practically the only open-minded thing that Christgau has ever said about Linda. It's not like I expect every music critic to bow at Linda's feet, but he and Dave Marsh get under my craw at times with their smug, self-righteous slams of her.

There are only a couple of references to Linda in Costello's book, neither of them very notable:

I was just able to reserve a Kindle copy through my public library. There are five people ahead of me. I'll probably cancel it, as I have no interest in Elvis Costello, and someone above just posted the Linda reference.

I have JOL CD 2-disc. Its "Compiled & Mastered by John Boylan at Great Eastern Studios". That is reassuring.
JOL was my first Linda compilation album. Its most noticable improvements in audio quality over the originspals are for her earlier albums. Love Has No Pride, Desperado, Heat Wave in particular. Those tracks are better than on my MFSL CDs.
However, in retrospect, there are too many great tracks left off. This is a more a collection of Linda's upbeat songs, with a sprinkling of sombre. It was/is intended as a companion to Linda's "Simple Dreams" book, same cover photo, font colour and similar font.
Nailed the lid on my Linda addiction.
