About this remastering: it makes me curious as to what people here listen to CDs on. A real stereo system with actual speakers? Do you convert the CD to another format for listening on mobile devices through headphones? Given that the remastered music on this CD is digital, does converting the music to a lossless, uncompressed format (as opposed to an MP3) degrade the recording? Everyone I know, including me, has a one-speaker/iPod setup for house listening, not the traditional two-speaker/receiver system of old. Can one expect to hear a noticeable difference on the remastered songs through such a setup? I plan on buying this CD, but am curious about what to expect from the remastering as a listening experience. I listen on a googlephonic system- the highest number of speakers before infinity. Actually, I do most of my listening on the computer, but I do have stereo speakers and a subwoofer attached. The trend seems to be doing away with disc players on new computers. Other than that, I listen in my car-- usually ipod connected to the stereo system- six speakers. When I do relax and listen to the actual stereo system, I have one of those 7.1 surround sound systems, but I rarely use it.

I have a nice Bose surround system, connected to a CD/bluray player on which I occasionally play music on CD and DVD. However most of my music is streamed from ripped CDs via Sonos or Apple Music. Listening to the uncompressed source on CD is superior and worth it.
I bought the remastered Prisoner In Disguise, Hasten Down The Wind and Don't Cry Now CDs which sound great in comparison to my ripped CDs.
On a day to day basis, I listen to music on my iPhone (with with good B&O headphones) or in the car, again with good B&O speakers.
good speakers and headphones make all the difference!

I gave up on a "real" stereo system several years ago because I spend so much time at my computer. I have a pair of B&W MM-1 computer speakers, and I like the sound they produce. They're hooked up to my computer, on which I play iTunes, mostly on shuffle. 99% of the music on my computer is from my own CDs, which I ripped to my computer (Windows) using Apple Lossless on iTunes. I have all of Linda's CDs except compilations of "hits." I have four that were "audiophile remastered" on the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) label, and listening on my computer, I can't tell the difference between those and the regular CDs.

Since this comes out today and it has many tracks that are remastered, I wonder if this compilation will eventually lead to the remastering of all her albums (except the already remastered Heart Like A Wheel)?
I really hope so. And maybe have the remastered cd's filled with bonus tracks ala Heart Like A Wheel or what Jimmy Page did with the Zeppelin remasters. How could would that be? Would love to hear Mad Love remastered and with bonus tracks.
C'mon Elektra, do something!

Just found JUST ONE LOOK in mailbox. Hoping the remastering is worth the price of yet another collection of the usual. Was hoping for more in album package. Then again what could surprise at this point? Still have to buy each release. Was disappointed in the WILLIN' IN LA sound but loved everything about THE COLLECTION package and sound.

Received this collection today and just listened all the way through, sounds clear and crisp. It was especially worth getting for those "Get Closer" tracks, still baffling why even Japan hasn't reissued this album on CD along with "Mad Love" and "Cry Like A Rainstorm." At only thirty tracks, it'a bit short though. I really wish they'd done a full-scale double best by including "Long Long Time," "When Will I Be Loved," "Try Me Again," "That'll Be The Day," "Ooh Baby Baby," "Easy For You To Say," "Somewhere Out There," etc,, but for someone just discovering Linda's music it's a great starting place. I'll never forget seeing her live in 1983, first with her backup band for a "hits" set, then in a ball gown to perform "What's New" songs after an intermission. Simply amazing!

Looking forward to Erik's online review for Amazon which hopefully will be compelling enough to get people, especially new fans to try it out. I think John Boylan knows Linda like few others. Maybe this is one of the projects he mentioned he was working on a couple of years ago.

The new compilation sounds really good. Certainly worthwhile. Some odd omissions for sure - Long Long Time, When Will I Be Loved(always sounds best when it goes into Willin)and from Linda's 90s albums I would love to have heard The Waiting included. A perfect anthology may never happen. There is just so much varied material and for me she will always be an album Artist. Many people however will find this a fine collection if they want to rediscover or start getting into Linda. Hits are hits and you can't escape them. Will look for Erik's review - always stay positive on Amazon. I understand that there will be a 45th anniversary of Silk Purse on Vinyl with Bonus Tracks (perhaps A Very Lovely Woman?). Something else to look forward to.

I don't think this one is going to chart very high. Walmart is the biggest retailer of CDs nationwide, and I visited two stores and neither one had this in stock.
Meanwhile, my copy from CD universe has not arrived. I think it may be time to break up with them.

My copy arrived from Amazon Prime on its release date last Friday. Am still listening to Disc One. Noticing some differences in the remastering. Did they reverse the order of "Tell Him" and "Lies" from the sequencing on "Get Closer"?

I just posted my review on Amazon, so it should be there now. When you posted your review did you notice the review by the person who said that the album sounded "overcompressed with limited dynamic range and tinny"? Do you think, obviously having heard the remaster, that this guy has a point? I find it hard to believe that five people found the quality ok to great and one found it horrid-maybe his equipment was messed up.

Thanks. Yes, it was a little jarring to not have "When Will I Be Loved" on there and then to just hear the opening strains of "Willin' "

That was a great strong review by Erik on Amazon. The sound is terrific on my Bang and Olfuson system. Much better than other CD compilations. Still love my vinyl but this is most satisfying. For your fans - I have also had problems with CD Universe - Amazon sent it on time. Thank You for this site since Ms. Ronstadt has no official web site.

Eric, outstanding review and advocacy for Linda's place in pantheon of great artists. It was weird I just now read your review because right after you made it know you had posted it I went to Amazon and couldn't find your review. Apparently it takes some time for a review to be published after it is submitted. Anyway I (and everyone here I'll bet) really appreciate your articulate and passionate words in a forum that may generate some real buzz for our passion.
I still wonder what the guy that panned the sound (not Linda) heard that apparently no one else did-guess I'll buy the album and find out myself.
I also may join the CD universe rebellion-it seems that a lot of their stuff, at least regards Linda, is either non-existent, not in stock or in the wrong medium.

John Boylan has done a wonderful job of remastering the songs on Just One Look. For example, "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me" finally sounds like it should with the dynamic range we remember from the original vinyl instead of the flat and dull Hasten Down The Wind CD audio.

Funny, I thought the album sounded great up until "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me" along with the others from Hasten Down the Wind and Simple Dreams. Like on the original CD of Hasten Down the Wind the volume is too low and so were the songs from Simple Dreams. Once I turned up the volume it sound great. Hasten, Simple, USA on CD are AWFUL. I have not bought Gold series of those three releases. The Gold issue of Don't Cry Now was an improvement IMO.

I like having the song Willin' standing on its own and separated from When Will I Be Loved. I don't dislike it, Tony. It is just jarring to me after hearing it the album-way for 41 years. And, actually, I think the mastering on "Blue Bayou" from "Simple Dreams" has a different quality to it. I hear things in the background that I had not paid as close attention to before. For example, the marimbas or whatever are more prominent to my ear than before.

I haven't listened to the entire CD yet. What I have listened to seems like a good remaster. He has a loud remix for songs like Tumbling Dice, and a more nuanced approach to songs like I Never Will Marry. Duh! Of course it's all subjective. I understand someone with a tin ear did not like this remastering.

This unlike the British version does not say Greatest Hits. I think for the price, especially for a new fan or one that does not have all of Linda's cds, to get 30 songs is very good. There are songs on here that people complained were not on the "02 album such as "How Do I Make You" and "Get Closer". Also, "I Knew You When" was a hit that was not on that album. They say that there was room for more songs but doesn't that mean more in royalties for the writers? Like I said, 30 songs for the money is already very good. I hope the pkging/liner notes etc are not as bad/omitted like they said. IMO, that is what old fans are attracted to. I will go get the cd from the po soon today and will do a review on Amazon. eddiejinnj

I would disagree with the American Songwriter reviewer that Get Closer was a disappointing album. I think a more truthful description would be that it is an underappreciated album. And possibly the best cut, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, is not even one of the 5 culled from the album.
