Every Fourth of July brings wider exposure for Linda's version of "Back in the USA." As a longtime fan it is perhaps the one song of hers that I have the most questions about. I believe her best recorded version of the song is the live one that is featured on the Chuck Berry ""Hail Hail Rock and Roll" soundtrack. It is widely reported that Berry played the song in a different key than had been rehearsed and it put Linda on the spot. But pro that she is she got through it just fine (outstandingly in my opinion.) She was reportedly very angry and walked right out the stage door into her limo and did not return for the second concert. It is said the producers of the film had a very hard time getting her to sign off on including the clip in the movie because she was "so pissed." I've always wondered if Berry and Keith Richards pulled a fast one on her on purpose to get a more spontaneous rock n roll performance. I also wonder that Linda didn't listen to it later and decide that it was actually better in the different key. She must have signed off on the live version being used in the Box Set retrospective of her work (instead of the studio track, which I also like, but in my opinion was less rambunctious and nervy.)

well, time heals all wounds the saying goes. maybe she just mellowed on it. I never knew that there was a second concert she didn't attend. I guess they were going to film 2 and take best clips. can someone confirm this? I guess I can look up history of hail hail rock and roll. eddiejinnj
ps: looked it up and it is a production assistant mark slocombe that tells the story and it is on Wikipedia. eddiejinnj
