I've never heard of most of those people. Yikes.

I've heard Sam Smith a few times on the radio when I've been driving back or forth from work and I just cannot hear what the fuss is all about. In general, I have always preferred female singers but there are a handful of male artists I do listen to. I don't know more than three quarters of artists these days and I'm 30! - my Dad's in his late 50's and he listens to all the latest stuff that's out there and he laughed at me a few months ago when I discovered Linda Ronstadt and put forward names such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Paloma Faith! Ha ha.

At the risk of sounding like this is an attack on Sam Smith--whenever I hear "Stay With Me", one word comes to mind: Valium. I just don't need to fall asleep in the middle of the day. But there was some good news: Rosanne Cash got a pair of trophies in the American Roots categories; Glen Campbell got what is in all likelihood his final Grammy for "I'm Not Gonna Miss You"; and the Band Perry's version of GC's career-making 1967 hit "Gentle On My Mind" (written by John Hartford) got them the Best Country Duo/Group award. I was kind of shocked to see Beck win Album of the Year for Morning Phase. But I was less shocked by Kanye West's reaction; it was so f***ing typical of him (IMHO): www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/music/kanye-west-becks-grammy-he-shouldve-given-his-award-beyonce-n302671Good to see John Williams add another trophy to his already overloaded mantle case full of awards (for Instrumental Composition--"The Book Thief").

SO HAPPY for Rosanne Cash! Well deserved her three Grammys. I wish the album had been nominated as a whole. Instead it was nominated for three different awards for the same song, which she won all three! "A Feather Is Not a Bird" is an amazing work of art and well deserving of all three of those awards. I feel The River & The Thread and Black Cadillac are her best. I have a special place in my heart for the latter because it was released right before my parents and dog all died within a month of each other. My best friend passed suddenly a year to the day of my mothers passing. I lived the Black Cadillac album and I emailed Rosanne and thanked her for it. She was gracious enough to take the time to email me back.
Had to reedit this post. Rosanne did win a Grammy for the album The River & The Thread, Best Americana Album. I read an article that had said she won three for the same song. I thought she was nominated for the album. Her wins were the highlight this year IMO.

Rosanne Cash is fantastic. I have followed her since her first record. She has only gotten better and better. And a beautifully unique voice.

Dianna, I was a little surprised by the comments I read in Live Blogging that said that Miranda Lambert was a throwback to traditional country. She was dressed IMHO like some pop star in that dress. The song sounded more pop rock than country to me. I posted the link to the Brandy Clark (with Dwight Yoakam) performance because that to me was more reminiscent of country. The song actually has a sound that reminds me a tiny bit of "Hasten Down the Wind."

Rick, I can't seem to find Miranda's grammy performance online. I'll check my dvr to see it again. I kind of thought Miranda had that Natalie Maines vibe, she's crazy, it comes thru her music, and to be honest, I'm not a huge fan but I liked her song last night. Brandy Clark..people are beginning to take notice. I will say, the women in country music today are kicking the mens butts. they are far more memorable than the guys. the men better step up because they've got some strong women to deal with. I've heard of the name Sam Smith but it's the other guy, who I confuse Sam with, the red headed guy, Ed something.. I love his voice..

As far as Kanye, I don't know if that was an intentional slam to Beck.. but give me a break, joke or not, when Kanye sang with Sir Paul, it sounded as if Paul was mouthing the words and not singing.. in any case, it sounded much better than kanye.

Quote by Dianna re. Miranda Lambert:
It has some of that 1980s Lone Justice vibe to it, I agree. I can't say I'm wild about her voice, however, because I'm not. I know she's a Texas native, but that voice of hers is so...wiry that it kind of hurts to listen to over an extended period of time.
Re. women in country music:
It's a pity, then, that this isn't reflected by radio airplay, where the men propagate this misogynistic s**t called "bro country".

In case Rick's original link didn't work elsewhere, I think I have Brandy's and Dwight's duet here.

Am not particularly a fan of Sam Smith, and was hoping Annie Lennox would have beaten Tony & Gaga ..... The Streisand forum was desperate for her to win for her duet CD "Partners" but it didn't despite being the biggest seller of the nominees I believe 1.1m nearly now.
