Look at the bright side, he probably introduced Linda to a whole new generation that doesn't have a clue who she is. They may investigate and discover her and what real music is all about. I do confess though that I enjoy some rap. There are different types of rap, hip hop and the like that are quite creative and enjoyable like alternative or ambient/New Age music can be in general. I like long, melodic pieces with long instrumental sections which is probably why I like Tom Thumbs Blues, Dreams of the San Joaquin, Across the Border, etc. I wish Linda had done more of them. I have even found myself enjoying this home made extended candlelight mix of The Blue Train(which by the way has many fans).

Didn't think I was going to go for this since I'm lukewarm about the song to begin with. But I have to say that the extensions, especially the toward the end, actually work to the song's advantage.
The extended fadeout is really evocative of a train moving through the night. I know that was the intent of the original studio recording, and that intent was met (it's my favorite part of the song), but by stretching it out even longer it becomes even more atmospheric, and Linda's vocals are more haunting from the repetition.
Thanks for posting, Goldie!
BTW, Tom Thumb's Blues is one of my favorite tracks by Linda. Besides her stellar interpretation (the way she sings the verse about St. Annie just kills me), I love the long instrumental fade.

I tried to listen to the Eminem song but I could not even make it to the part where Ronstadt was mentioned. I gave up. There was just nothing there that I could relate to. I don't hate all rap. F*** the Police is one of my favorites.

does anybody know why he would say negative things re: Linda? like others have said maybe there is no meaning to this or just use of terms we are not familiar with. I do not know much of Eminem's music, if any, so I can't say whether he has called out/picked on other celebrities in his music in the past. hopefully, he is just paying her some respect his own way. Maybe he thought it cool she did not go to the rrhof ceremony. who knows? Linda's name is not easy imo to include lyrically so there must be a reason he included her and listed her full name. maybe somebody can check his fan site and ask opinions. eddiejinnj

Quote by eddieinnj:
Basically, it boils down to that the guy needs something to rant and rave and rap about, and maintain his reputation for being "edgy" (whatever that term means nowadays). But I kind of doubt that slapping Linda in the face with a lobster is paying respect of any kind to her, except in the most perverted and twisted way possible.

well, like neil young in Sweet Home Alabama, her name will always be in the song though the genesis for why eninem included Linda is not yet known (in neil's case skynyrd did it as a response to young's "Southern Man" which was not specifically tmk about skynyrd). is this song a hit of sorts? eddiejinnj

I recall a quote from Linda that she could be happy studying algae if her beau was a scientist.

Maybe Em knows more about Linda then we give him credit for. I didn't even know the algae thing and was wondering about it.

LOL.. what the hell prompted him to write that? It's so random and doesn't even make sense. Well, people like John Lennon or Bob Dylan (others too) could write lyrics that make no sense but you still get the feeling that they are revealing the secrets of the universe. And sometimes there is sense there, but it's hidden. That's why we got all those books (about Dylan especially) and articles explaining what it all means. 10-15 years ago I read an article with five different ways to explain the lyrics of "Mr Tambourine Man" and they all made perfect sense to me. At other times there is no 'hidden meaning' but the imagery is so beautiful and/or interesting that it works. Eminem is too talentless to fit into either one of these categories though. When he's talking nonsense he's talking nonsense, and that's it.

this interview is in the movie "The Interview", correct? This is Christmas not April Fool's Day. So it is cool that Linda is mentioned so prominently in the movie. btw, Merry Christmas to all including Linda. Happy Holidays to those that celebrate various holidays this time of year. eddiejinnj

That movie is getting so much attention, for all the wrong reasons, but the whole thing is rather ironic. If anyone decides to see the film, fill us in on the interview segment with Eminem. Hope nobody hacks her computer--LOL!!!!

Good point. This is Christmas, not April Fools Day. Yes, those stills are from THE INTERVIEW. (James Franco is highlarious)
I did doctor the still about Linda. It really says "Does Eminem hate old people?"

That's why I said will the real Dave Skylark please stand up, please stand up. Didn't want to ruin the joke although it was a good one. Although it could explain why Skylark is temporary blacked out on youtube (by Linda). Hopefully it is temporary.

I don't know what's more bizarre, the incomprehensible lyric or the fact that Linda's son responded on Twitter with "Hey, @eminem, you talk about slapping my mom with a lobster. When can I introduce you two."

Out of curiosity, I looked up the phrasing , if you could call it that, of these lyrics in the Urban Dictionary . I am appalled by it. Given my limited exposure to Rap music, I found that it has always made its constant derogatory remarks about women in general, not a specific one.
I really hated it and I can't believe I'm in the minority.

Quote by Linda:
I don't care for Rap music either, specifically for the very reasons you cited: blatant misogyny of the worst kind. And no, you're not quite in the minority here. Having Linda's name dropped in a song's lyrics, especially when it is in one by so morally repugnant a "rapper" as Eminem, is not necessarily such a great thing (IMHO).

Is that supposed to make some sort of sense, or am I asking too much? Robert, I like Eninen though don't own any of his music. One must think of his lyrics as a foreign language and not compare it to "normal" English. Lobster = Love of your life Balcony = sexual genital massage with clothes on Slap = fingers talk to the face....like talk to the hand. I thing it is a favorable lyric for lyric and a compliment.

With all due respect to kgreen and given my abysmal ignorance of the subject, I still don't see how the translation could be considered positive. Am I missing something?

No disrespect taken? Been away a lot on business Eddie? Not favorable or unfavorable but I consider a Linda mention that is not negative a good thing....the kids will understand, not us old people (53 yrs. old).
It is not unfavorable to mention someone in a lyric. The lyric kind of means.... She saw the love (or a lover) of her life(lobster), was intimate (balcony) with him but wasn't interested in a long term relationship (Slap)....she prefers algae.
Maybe some true thoughts there. I had to take a course in this urban/Ebonics a year ago...not totally fluent in this but I think there are web resources you could look up.
Think of the term Fat/Phat. One means overweight(English), the other means cool (Ebonics/urban).

Kevin, thanks for the tip! Learn something every day! Your translation does sound a bit like Linda with respect to.....oh perhaps G Lucas. I guess I should admit that I'm old and ignorant at least of that aspect of our culture (I still, however, like melody and western European harmony).
If the target audience of Em sees this piece as positive with respect to Linda I can see how this could be a musical "gateway drug" to a quality experience or even fandom for some younger folks.
