I know ratings for American Idol are down to the level of the Walking Dead, but I'm surprised there has been no discussion of the program this year.

I think Dianna (Lucy, on the previous forum) was/is the main American Idol watcher here.
My opinion, for what it's worth (which, admittedly, isn't much [LOL]) is that, with a scattered few exceptions, American Idol and all of these other TV vocal competition shows have really done a lot of damage, because the quality of great or even merely good singers has gone right through the floor, especially with the women. Either they have to somehow sound like Mariah, Whitney, Celine, or C-Ag (my acronym for Christina Aguilera [LOL]), or they have to use AutoTune to correct their vocal deficiencies. I think that's an absolutely godawful thing for popular music in America.

To be honest I havent paid much attention to it this season, a lot going on buying a house out of state and school, family a new puppy I did see it last week and one of the better singers, Erika (dark short hair) got the boot.. I was surprised the judges didn't save her yet kept Heejan sp? I keep thinking William Hung (she bangs) lol Kind of a boring cast this season (except for Heejan)

The judges had no choice but to keep Heejun since he was not the bottom vote-getter.
He reminds me of William Hung also, except that he actually can sing-- would be nice if he could lose the Asian accent.
The judges are useless this year-- the only one who gives useful advice is Jimmy Iovine.
I don't think the judges are fair to Heejun. They keep telling Phillip Phillips to "be himself" which means taking any song any week and making it sound the same as what he did the previous six weeks. Because Heejun has a sense of humor, they keep telling him to get serious-- in effect, they don't want him to "be himself." There was absolutely nothing "disrespectful" about Heejun's performance last week. Iovine just needs to get the stick out of his arse.
I think it's odd that Steven Tyler, who dropped his pants and pointed his ass at the cameras, could think that Heejun was disrespectful to the Idol franchise.

Quote by Partridge:
I am of the opinion that S.T. is the last person who ought to be a judge on any vocal talent competition considering the way he f***ed up the national anthem at the AFC Championship game back in January. He's such a prick!

I was kind of surprised Stephen was so harsh on Heejan too. He seems to love everybody and hardly gives negative feedback. And you guys are right, Stephen is/was pretty rowdy especially back in his day. I didn't hear his rendition of the NA but I heard the same thing Erik. Just odd all around.. unless he is suddenly becoming a goody two shoes... But he was right, when he said the music business will kick your ass. They say that to all contestants.. "be yourself" or be true to yourself, every season. or so and so sings too many ballads.. ect..

Quote by dianna re. Steven Tyler: And coming from Steven Tyler, who looks more and more like Keith Richards everyday (meaning slightly deader), that's kind of like the pot calling the kettle black (IMHO).

You know I have nothing really against Stephen and Aerosmith. Made some really good rock music.. But, other day I couldn't help but chuckle.. at some point in a persons life, the midriff baring belly shirts and skin tight David Lee Roth spandex pants need to stop. It becomes a little ridiculous when you are approaching or at senior citizen status.

I am disappointed that Heejun has been given the heave-ho. No interest in these other caterwaulerers.

I don't know whether anyone will consider this good news, but Stevie Nicks is going to be mentoring on the show. This is all good and fine, of course; but for my opinion, she probably ought to be a judge on the show, replacing the caterwauler or the pole dancer.

It seems like that Philip Phillips guy has a huge fanbase. I'm telling you, every year, it's about the cute young boy the tween voters seem to love. I'm beginning to think the girls don't have a chance anymore.

I think a lot of that has to do with the way they box the girls into some kind of corner. I have always disliked their seeming addiction to wanting to replicate the worst melismatic tendencies of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in some of the women, though Brooke White went and did more or less the Carly Simon/Carole King 70s singer/songwriter route four years ago. Other times, I think they're also wanting to replicate Carrie Underwood's 2005 success (and, I make no apologies in saying this, Carrie is someone who I am really beginning to despise). For crying out loud, why don't they just let the female contestants be who they are right then and there?!

I think they've had a few girls in the past who stayed true to themselves, Brooke and even Crystal Bowersox, but once again, the cute boy won. This year it seems more like a pageant show..usually there are a few non pageant types who make it pretty far.. I think last year it was Haley Reinhart (sp?) Melinda Doolittle another year and so on... I'm finding the Voice more interesting anyways.

And not that it matters now, but Phillip Phillips won the thing.

And not that it matters now, but Phillip Phillips won the thing. Yeah, I kind of figured he would get the prize.. I read something on the vote for the worst site.. 5 years in a row, it's been a White Guy With Guitar.lol.. so they are encouraging to vote again next year for another WGWG. But on a serious note, I did watch the last show before the finale, and I will say, one of the numbers Phil did was pretty good and actually it's the song written for him by whomever at AI and will be released to radio.. I liked it.. it was very non cheese american idol.. EY here it is.. I'm glad he beat out the Sanchez kid.. as talented as she is, I just couldn't listen to her.. no secret I can't stand that type of music.

In all the time the show has been on, I am surprised by the fact that I have CDs done by any of the people that ever competed on it. Granted they're all recordings made by the fairer sex--Brooke White; Katharine McPhee; and Crystal Bowersox--but these women, each of whom more or less fall into the singer/songwriter or (in Crystal's case) roots-rock genres, did stuff that was, to me, outstanding. There's just something about that feel, obviously spawned off by having listened to a lot of that stuff, Linda especially, that I miss on the radio these days, and, insofar as Idol goes, those three embody the spirit of that era. Call it nostalgia or whatever else you want, but there it is.
