I got in a bit of an argument with another member of a Linda Ronstadt group that I am a member of. He said Linda made Webb, Bonoff, George, Zevon and Souther very rich for the rest of their lives.
I know it was not Linda that made Webb rich. Webb became rich from his success as a writer in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Linda made “Easy For You To Say”:a minor hit in 82 or early 83. “Adios” was a hit on the adult contemporary chart in 1990 but I don’t know that it charted on the top 100 pop charts. Yes, Cry Like A Rainstorm sold three million copies and Get Closer a little under a million.
Karla’s “All My Life” was a huge hit, so I will give him that, but the singles that were Bonoff tunes on Hasten were both minor hit singles (“Someone to Lay Down Beside Me” and “Lose Again). Yes Hasten was a platinum seller but the real money is with a hit single for the writer.
As far as Souther and George, she never released any of their songs as singles.
She a had a hit single with Zevon’s “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” in 78’ but it was not what you would consider a huge hit. Granted having a song on a hit album generates good money, but not like a hit single and hardly millions, even today.
The guys argument was she had hits with all their songs and generated millions for each of them by making them hit singles. Not true. Bonoff, Zevon, George were/are not what I would consider rich by any means. They were/are working musicians who made a good living, but rich? No, I don’t think so. Linda surely helped their careers, and had Linda not recorded their music they may not have been as successful as they were. Webb I am sure is very well off, but it wasn’t Linda that made him rich and I doubt very seriously she made the others what you would call “rich”.
He thought by me saying this I was trying to put Linda down and I was not. Linda has been my favorite artist since I was eight years old and I am fifty seven now and she will always remain my favorite. These Facebook groups don’t like it when you don’t agree with them. They take it as a put down to Linda and many of the groups make you agree to never say anything negative about her before they except you as a member. I don’t think what I said was negative at all. Just pointing out the facts. I got kicked off the group for a week for making my point. The guy I was contradicting was administrator of the group and he had no idea what he was talking about.
Dolly may have made several million off of Whitney Houston’s cover of “ I Will Always Love You” but that song is one of the best selling hit singles ever and the Bodyguard soundtrack is one of the best selling albums in history. Songwriters are not making millions usually off a hit song. Not even today. People have this idea that writers and artists are all rich and never have to worry about money. Net profits and gross profits are two different figures. Ask the writers and artists, because what you read is far from the truth when it comes to their net worth.
