From the '70s and written, I believe, by Paul McCartney. Very Beatle-esque.

It's "No Matter What" by Badfinger, the English pop-rock group that, for all practical purposes, Sir Paul "discovered". That was a big hit for them in the fall of 1970.

I could think of neither the name of the song nor the name of the group. I had Spooky Tooth lodged in my brain and it blocked all other possibilities.
