Stevie Nicks is standing up for her girl. She doesn’t have to be Linda’s close friend to pay tribute to her.
Linds’s Rock era music was similar to Stevie’s. Both were extremely successful singers in the SoCal music scene and made music collaborating with other artists. Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, CNSY, Joni, Bonnie, Linda, The Mamas and the Papas, Jackson Browne, Carly and James, Carole Long etc, all has a bluesy folk country and R&B mixture that were put together with great lyrics. Their covers were usually better than the originals.
Stevie and Pat Benatar kind of assumed Linda’s solo Rock Queen mantle while Linda pivoted and changed genres when she was being surpassed by newer solo acts in the 1980s.
Stevie made sure that the RRHOF paid tribute to Linda the way it should have two decades ago.
I love Stevie for that. Get off her case.
Do you mean Carole King guest vs Long? I was going to edit it but just in case there is a Carole Long I didn't want to do so without asking? ej

This is an old resurrected thread but an interesting one at that. So I looked up her wiki bio and found it incredibly interesting. A very good friend of mine grew up in the house next to Stevie's parents. Almost an aunt uncle type of thing. Nothing but good things to say about that whole family. I would take anything Stevie says as her word. Not a mean bone in her body but I wouldn't want to get on her bad side lol. Great artist and musician. Like Linda she is one of a kind. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevie_Nicks

to each their own; I'm entitled to voice an opinion, as you are. standing by my previous comments. the fact the other performers have previously acknowledged LR's influence etc on the public record amplifies this; the fact the two women haven't even met? For me, SN's comments were superficial and ultimately about her. wonder who she'll acknowledge in her acceptance speech into the RnR Fame this year ...

I was surprised as I have said in the past that Stevie was at the Linda induction. In her defense, we have highlighted that Stevie mentioned the effect Different Drum had on her and decided to go into the music business because of Linda in her auto/biography? or some book she is mentioned in. What year was this book written because I think we started talking on here about that quote after Stevie discussed this at the RRHOF induction time. I was surprised by the quote because again she just does not seem to have direct connection with Linda or was at the same place at the same time a lot. I know I saw Stevie at least once (maybe twice) in concert. I know the one time was at the Garden State Arts Center (now the PNC Bank Arts Center) in 1983 or 1984. I can't say that I don't like some of her music and have a number of her albums but she did not have the persona/essence that attracted me to Linda. In other words, I was not into knowing her life and following her as a fan like Linda. eddiejinfl
PS: Guest welcome to the Linda site. Can I ask how you know Stevie, herself, made sure the RRHOF paid a fitting tribute to her? Are there quotes that she talked to the powers that be or something to that effect? Thanks and again; welcome!!!!!!

Guest: I am not sure if you are a Linda fan or not but Linda planned her standards departure. If all went as planned she would have had a standards album right after "Mad Love", the first album in history to debut in the Billboard 200 Top 5. It was Number 3 after "The Wall" and Joel's "Glass Houses" for like most of 1980. "Get Closer" was not as huge a blockbuster as some of her other albums but garnered many Grammy noms including "Best Rock and Pop Performance Female. Then she releases "What's New" and has a year long charting album much of the time at number 3 also. I disagree that she had done so when others were surpassing her. I personally am glad now (maybe not so glad then)that she did make the genre change then as she may have missed the chance to work with Nelson Riddle (he passed in 1986). Read some of Linda's bio online or her book "Simple Dreams". It is a great read. eddiejinfl

Prior to Linda's Hall of Fame induction, I have never heard Linda or Stevie mention the other in interviews.. Maybe they have but I don't recall it. I know they both ran in the same circle of musicians.. Also, I've never heard Linda mention the Wilson Sisters from Heart or vice versa.. but there is a photo of Linda standing next to A.W. So who knows??? I like Stevie and I don't know enough about her.. nor do I have neighbors who know the family.. lol Unless we know the artist personally, we really don't know what's in their heart or what the motives are... that said, when I saw Stevie at Linda's induction, I thought it was a little odd.. Dolly would have been better and as much as I like Underwood, Yearwood, who is a true fan should have been there instead. JMO

And while I am not a fan of Carrie Underwood's original material, I thought her tribute song (Different Drum) was the best performance at Linda's induction ceremony.

In defense of Carrie, she didn't exactly have the easiest task on hand (American Idol or not), in doing "Different Drum", and she pulled it off quite well. But I do agree that Trisha's presence, because of her being probably the mega-LR fan of her generation of female country singers, would have been even better.

WOW!! never saw this thread before!!!
I think Stevie in the past couple of decades has become a mega "advocate" for the female in the music business....and thus..her "commentary" about "way back when" re: singing and linda "knowing" she was a star...was more of
Stevie just advocating for women as being powerfull and self directed in their own right!!
....and yes...I agree...if she knew Linda...she would know that Linda....would not be touting her wares to get thru a high school aisle.....as a Queen wanna be.....
Stevie did not sing "just like Linda"
nor did others "sing just like Linda"
Linda sang like no other...and was awarded Queen status as to all of her opportunities...because of just THAT!!!!

I DO recall a situation where Linda and Stevie were together and interacting. It was at a concert in the late 70s where Louise Goffin was performing and Linda apparently turned to Stevie who was nearby and said something like “we better watch out.”

Nicks certainly met Linda at the Mulholland Tomorrow benefit concert at Universal Amphitheater in LA on Sept. 17, 1985, when both were performing with Don Henley, Jackson Browne, and Tom Petty.

They met above like madlove posted at the Louise Goffin concert and I thought I posted what DCO, our guest, said that they must have met at the event DCO mentions. The above pic is almost painful to me. Looking at the body language in the pic by each person's positioning, it does not seem like the most comfortable situation. IMO, did Stevie really HAVE to sit on JD's lap and Linda is slightly turned away. The main point is that Stevie and Linda were at least two events together. eddiejinfl

And not that it necessarily matters, but in 2007, Linda and Stevie, along with Steven Spielberg, were both honored by their home state by virtue of induction into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame.

Also, Stevie is sitting very close to JD, but I don't think she's on his lap.

I see that now. Thanks, Pop. I don't want to assume which I kind of did but it was more my spatial perception of pic. Based on such perception, I thought that Stevie and J.D. were dating. Did, in fact, she ever date him? I might be thinking of the pics of Stevie with Rick the bodyguard. eddiejinfl

Just saw Erik's comments in full. It does matter especially if it was in the same year, imo. Maybe, that created the impetus for Stevie's inclusion in Linda's Girls at the Rock Hall of Shame ceremony. Thanks to both of you. eddiejinfl

Since Linda was no longer with JD, I don't think it would matter to her. The awkwardness of their expressions probably had to do with the event.

It probably did, though I'm sure some here probably think Stevie was overstating Linda's influence on her at such an early time in her life (she was 19 when Linda first hit with "Different Drum" in the fall of 1967). But we have to concede that Linda's influence does range far and wide with her fellow female peers, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that Linda's influence did rub off on her fellow Arizonan by some strange alchemy (listen to Stevie's 1982 hit "After The Glitter Fades").

It might not have mattered to Linda or if it did she didn't show it. Wasn't he considered the love of her life according to some sources? Boy, Linda can really move on if it didn't bother her at all. We all are different, though. I forgot that "After the Glitter Fades" was a single. It got to Number 32 on the Hot 100. eddiejinfl
