It must be strange for people to know that Linda and Stevie have been known to work with some of the same people in the studio, and yet they've never actually met face-to-face...yet, anyway. But it is clear that Stevie does appreciate what Linda has done in her career. Too many people like to set them up as being competitors, the notion of which is ridiculous to begin with anyway.

I love Stevie Nicks but she is one loopy broad. Her dates are off, her memories not too sharp but her heart is in the right place and she dubbed the group as "Linda's girls" and sang with great joy. So thank you to a cosmic classic saluting our gal.

the quote mtg to see louise goffin must have just been brief. I do know that it was written and seen by not just me lol!!!! so they have met but don't recall it. it is amazing that they did not see each other even occasionally since they did hang out with a lot of the same people but they all were so heavily touring in the day. they didn't know what day it was probably. linda always said she hated the road. eddiejinnj

It was from an interview she did in Playboy in 1980

Nice interview, some good thoughts from Stevie but about Stevie still being in high school when Linda and the Stone Poneys broke through with "Different Drum:" Stevie would've been 19, approaching 20 when the song charted, so was she held back in school? I knew a few classmates who were 19 when they graduated but most were 17 or 18 when graduated from high school. Maybe the year given (1948) for Stevie's birth in the press was wrong?

In all fairness, during her performance she did say that she first heard Different Drum "I don't know, when I was in high school or maybe the beginning of college or something." Her imprecision recalling a song, released nearly fifty years ago, is hardly reaches the level of "loopy."
I also read a story where Waddy Wachtel was asked if the two had ever meant and he mentioned that the were seated near each other at a Louise Goffin show and Stevie initiated some small talk. Assuming he's correct, the encounter was clearly a bigger deal to him than it was to either of them. Incidentally, I saw an interview with Linda in which she didn't think she'd ever sang with Neil Diamond and the interview pointed out that he could show her on Youtube if need be...I'm sure the two of them have been many places, met many people and said lots of things that are far more interesting to you and me than the are to actually subjects.

I was thinking the same thing. Stevie is only about two years younger than Linda, so the high school think doesn't make sense at all. It's surprising that they never met, but the admiration and respect for Linda as a trail blazer in the music industry is nice to hear.

Her imprecision recalling a song, released nearly fifty years ago, is hardly reaches the level of "loopy." I'd never call Stevie loopy but thanks for her full comment as every account I had read on Stevie commenting on hear DD while in "high school" omitted the part "or maybe the beginning of college or something." I think Stevie's recollection was that DD was a hit much earlier in 1967 than when it was a hit. I can't fault her for that because for a long time, I also had thought the song had been a hit in early to mid 1967 rather than late 1967 to early 1968. Time has a funny way of playing tricks on our memories. Those of us who are old enough can sometimes recall things that happened 40 to 50 years ago with clarity, although there are some eventts where our recall is faulty, and we remember things differently to the way they actually happened. Pretty odd but not nearly as being able to recall something from decades ago versus not being able to recall something six months ago.

Stevie obviously doesn't know Linda when she says this:
And I think that when she was 15, 16, 17, she was probably just like me. She was marching through the halls of her high school going, 'Everybody should be moving aside right now, because, "Don't you know who I am? I'm Linda Ronstadt, future huge rock star." It's just in her. I watched her and I listened to her. And I loved all her songs and I got told great stories about her from all the amazing people that did know her. And I don't really know how she slipped through the cracks, and I never really got to meet her. I should've gotten to meet her. Anyway, she was just like the perfect storm of everything meeting at the same time in perfection when she hit the radio.
It was the last thing Linda would ever say, do or think.

well if linda was 21 when the song was popular, stevie would have been 19 which is hs/college age. I believe she said when I was in hs or early college. she also said she didn't look as good in cut-offs lol!!!!! eddiejinnj

From those remarks, it's apparent that Stevie doesn't know Linda at all. It sounds like she's projecting her own feelings on Linda because that's probably the way Stevie felt in H.S. They are polar opposites in many ways, as far as I can tell. Stevie seems to crave the limelight and enjoys being the center of attention.

Maybe she's projecting a lot of her own feelings on Linda, but I think we have all done that at some point, myself included. Stevie is obviously very different from Linda in performance and musical style, and perhaps enjoys being the center of attention much more than Linda ever did. But I think it helps to put things into perspective that we're not talking about an overcooked (not to mention twerking) ham like Miley Cyrus, or a Katy Perry, or, even more to the point, Taylor Swift (who has hook-ups and break-ups seemingly every couple of months and then writes [gratuitiously] about them in song). We may be piling on Stevie unnecessarily for what are, I feel, fairly innocuous comments. Besides, we've seen far worse stuff said and written about Linda than this.

I think it's been recorded in this group that Stevie was a curious choice to include in the tribute. Unlike the others in the lineup, to my recollection I've never heard/read SN acknowledge LR's influence. Wonderful to hear the remarks from GF and ELH.

I don't think we piling on her. I think some of her comments were off the cuff and though I think she probably did always admire Linda, it just never happened they met and got close. not everyone knows everybody in the music biz. though in this case you would have thunk that they would have crossed paths a lot. also, as was mentioned or intimated, they might have been seen as competitors (for lack of a better word half asleep) back in the day. I do agree they are very different performers and personalities. eddiejinnj

Stevie did use several of Ronstadt's band members to cut her first two solo albums. Linda even spoke of this fact back in 82 in her Westwood One concert and interview that was broadcast live on the radio Thanksgiving night back in 82. The liner notes inside Nick's second solo album Wild Heart, Stevie thanks Jimmy Webb for writing her favorite song "All I Know" (she has never covered it) Also John McVie had a major crush on Ronstadt which was discussed in Fleetwood Mac's cover story in Rolling Stone in 1977-78. My favorite artists have always been Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Nicks , Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris. I followed their careers and bought and still do every release.

WHEN U THINK OF GREAT FEMALE ROCK STARS OF THE 70S, U THINK OF THESE TWO (LINDA & STEVIE). I THINK IT SWEET OF HER TO HONOR LINDA, EVEN THEY NEVER REALLY HUNG OUT. THEY ACTUALLY DID MEET THE ONE TIME, BUT A FEW WHISPERED COMMENTS TO EACH OTHER IN A DARKENED AUDIENCE FOR ANOTHER SINGER, DOESN'T REALLY DOESN'T ADD UP TO MUCH OF A "MEET". THEY BOTH DATED JD SOUTHER, AT DIFFERENT TIMES & WORKED WITH MANY OF SAME PLAYERS. SO THEY KNEW OF EACH OTHER. I FOUND NOTHING WRONG IN STEVIE'S COMMENTS. AND LINDA WAS AMBITIOUS IN HER MUSICAL QUEST; WHY SHE SPLIT TUCSON SO YOUNG FOR THE BIGGER CLUB/MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES IN LA. I REMEMBER LINDA PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE LADIES IN F.MAC FOR BEING SO SUCCESSFUL, YET RETAINING THEIR FEMINITY. THEY SHARE SO MANY SIMILAR EXPERIENCES IN BEING WOMEN IN ROCK AT SAME TIME. I RECALL STEVIE WANTING TO ADOPT TOO. I THINK HER ADDICTIONS KEPT HER FROM THAT, OR SHE WOULD HAVE DONE LIKEWISE. THEIR LIFESTYLE WITH MANY LOVERS & NEVER MARRYING ARE VERY SIMILAR. SO GLAD STEVIE WAS THERE. VERY APPROPRIATE.

I'll side with that. Both Stevie and Linda have their own different ways of doing things, but I really feel that Stevie's comments about Linda were very heartfelt and inspirational; and in a business where a certain amount of backstabbing is not only expected, but (perversely) even encouraged, it's great to know that Stevie doesn't go for that.

Stevie was married for six months legally. She has stated it was a sad mistake made out of desperation. Her best friend since high school, Robin became pregnant when her cancer returned and she died days after giving birth to a son. I believe his name is Mathew. Stevie married his father shortly after they lost Robin. Sounds crazy but I can understand their intentions.

what is that animated pic all about? love the depiction of linda. very nice. it does not compliment Carly imo other than those that like the fact that she seems "cold" if ya know what I mean. linda does too but not as cold. lol carly's depiction is more of a caricature and Linda's just a nice animated pic of her. eddiejinnj
