You know how sometimes a middle-of-the-pack Ronstadt song you've heard oh, say, 245,879 times, out of nowhere grabs your ear and won't let go?
I'm having that experience with Don't Cry Now.
I've been struck by that opening piano and the way it evokes an old-timey gospel, and then Linda comes in, rather stately, with the opening line and then just wails on the next one ("if you've ever gone down with your pride"). Thrilling.
Not to mention the lovely lyric of the "painter who waits for the sunrise with a picture in both of his hands."
But what keeps me coming back (and back and back) is not only all of the above, but the twining, roundelay background vocals of Linda and Wendy Waldman, especially the way they combine with organ-like resonance on "don't cry now." Awesome.
And the way the song crescendos after the ringing guitar solo and the way Linda's voice climbs those heights...
Suddenly, this song has lodged into my Ronstadt top 10.
What I wouldn't give, or have given, to hear it live.

The same thing happened to me with this song. I didn't care for this song though I have always loved the album itself. Then a few years ago for the same reasons you did, I finally got it.

Always loved the song. Ranks as one of my all time favorite ballads of hers.

I've actually had the same feeling about this song myself. I know it's the title track, but for some reason it was the song that I liked the least. I actually had to listen to this album over and over to really appreciate it, but it has grown on me. I hear that gospel sound too in this song, the piano introduction. Considering this album was released the year I was born, it's understandable that I wouldn't be as fond of it as her later releases. But now I'm getting it too. It is a very underrated album, probably because of the mega-hit that followed it. Of course we all know which one that was.

Maybe one of the reasons why this song -- and in particular the background vocals -- caught my ear is that I'm listening to the MoFi gold disc with its remastering of the master recording. At any rate, it's a brilliant country/rock/gospel-ish tune. And Linda's voice is just about as emotive and appropriately powerful as it ever was.

this is a great album, I've not bought any of the MoFi discs - is there really a noticeable improvement in the sound ... ??

this is a great album, I've not bought any of the MoFi discs - is there really a noticeable improvement in the sound ... ?? That would largely depend on what sort of system you are playing them on. You won't notice much on an iPod, for example, if you convert the songs to mp3s. But played from the gold disc through a good sound system? You bet, especially, I think, on DCN. The original CD had, to my ears, a rather flat, muddy mix. On the MoFi gold disc, everything sounds vibrant and crystal clear, especially the vocals, although I have noticed instrumentation I hadn't picked up on before.

Don't Cry Now gold CD from original masters + Bose sound system = happy Sean! From the MoFi site: "Remastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's version sounds exquisite and reveals every nuance and shade of Ronstadt's voice. Don't Cry Now is part of Mobile Fidelity's effort to present this iconic singer's work as it was meant to be heard." www.mofi.com/product_p/udcd768.htm$29.99

I have always considered the song "Don't Cry Now" to be one of the best ballads that Linda ever sang. The album is one I never tire of and can, and do, listen to over and over again. For all the reasons stated, and more, the album is a masterpiece. I'm currently listening to the first two albums of Linda's solo career "HSHG" and "SP". While the early albums may have problems with production, there is no denying the sheer power and beauty of that incredable voice. Well worth another listen if it has been awhile since you've heard either album. BTW MoFi has released four of Linda's albums: "DCN", "PID", "HDTW", "SD". All are excellent. I only wish we could get them to release more of her cataloug.

I think you'll find, Sean, that on the MoFi disk that "Silver Threads" really rocks.
That's something I noticed about the MoFi disks. The drums on the general release CDs sounded a bit dull, but on the MoFi disks the drums really snap. I'd never really noticed how "drummy" Prisoner in Disguise was until I heard the MoFi disk.
But back to DCN. Besides Linda's gorgeous vocals sounding as good as I've ever heard them, the instrumentation on that album is just stellar, and you can really hear it now, in all of its layers and textures. That is one exquisitely produced album -- despite having what, four producers?

Does anyone know the story behind the Dont Cry Now album cover? How come it didn't have her name or the album title on the cover? If you recall, when the album was released, the shrink wrap was adorned with a huge light brown sticker, applied to the lower half of the picture, which read Linda Ronstadt - Dont Cry Now. It always looked to me as if there was some kind of mistake made during the manufacturing of the album jacket.

Well, musedeva, all you have to do is sing along with "Don't Cry Now" and you'll feel like you went to church!
And I'd imagine if you had someone singing harmony with you like Wendy Waldman does here, you'll feel like you're on the stairway to heaven.
And yes, "Down So Low" is awesome, especially that live version from Germany you can (sometimes) find on YouTube. She sings almost the entire song with her eyes closed and rolls deep. Spine-tingling performance.

Its sound staged much better than any others, including the MoFi which I have & might sell. All the tracks are better. I confess to being a Linda audiophile, and the mini-LP CD of DCN is best (also own the same on a real LP).
