This popped up during an iPod shuffle.
This has to be one of Linda's most underrated and beautiful tracks.
Springsteen's song is top-notch, and Linda enhances it with an understated, velvet sincerity.
And the lower-register sustain on the final "you"? Gorgeous.
This should be a wedding staple.
Just thought I'd mention this since it's been a while since we've discussed an actual song of Linda's, distracted as we've been by her forthcoming book and other topics.

I agree that it is a lovely version. I am not sure that it would adapt itself to a wedding song, as it seems to have an in between tempo which would not lend itself to a slower dance, and it certainly would not be an up tempo dance number. I did attend a wedding a number of years ago and the bride selected Linda's 'All My Life' as their wedding dance song, which was well received.

Yes, "All My Life" and "Don't Know Much" are (or were) fairly popular wedding songs, although I don't know that dancing to either of them would be any easier than to "Should I Fall Behind"! In fact, the ticking tempo seems just right for a little left-right sway. But then, I'm no Debbie Allen (!).
I guess the lyrics to the song in question are less "on the nose" than the other two. I find the lines "let's make our steps clear that the other may see/I'll wait for you, should I fall behind wait for me" very touching and perhaps not as saccharine as are the lyrics to the other two.
Actually, I was at a commitment ceremony a few years ago and the grooms chose "Feels Like Home" as their song -- but not Linda's version! The one they chose was by Chantal Kreviazuk*. Made me want to take back my gift...
*Featured on the soundtrack to "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and hers is also the most popular version on iTunes, far outdistancing Linda's.

It's amazing how the connection to a film, especially a popular one can turn around a songs fortune.

Oh, Robert. You are a man of convictions!
Anyone else have buried-treasure songs from Linda they'd care to mention? If so, I think a new thread for every song would be fun. Would get us back to specifically talking about her songs for awhile.
I can think of a chest full.

I can think of these five off the bat, all from the Nineties, the decade that the public forgot about Linda, but her peers didn't:
A River For Him--from Winter Light Walk On--from Feels Like Home Heartbreak Kind--from We Ran Icy Blue Heart--from We Ran He Was Mine--from Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions

Yes....."If I Should Fall Behind" IS a beautiful song. That entire album is outstanding. It has become one of my favorites. Like I've said before on another thread, "We Ran" is a grossly underrated album. It's almost a crime it didn't sell more than it did. Should've won a Grammy too.

She really touches your heart with her voice. She makes every song her own. It's like she is feeling everything she sings. And I can relate to it. I'm not afraid to admit, that song brings tears to my eyes every time I play it........along with many other songs of hers.

My most emotional Ronstadt moment happened when she sang Feels Like Home at a concert here in nearby Phoenix. That song belongs to Linda.

This is also one of my top five favorite LR songs, but I think the one that really tops my charts when it comes to the We Ran CD would be Damage and Cry Til My Tears Run Dry. Those songs have so much emotion in them!

Back on former Linda Ronstadt board, David Sullivan (whatever happened to him?) used to go album by album and have us vote for the Top 3 songs each album. I always loved "If I Should Fall Behind," and I remember being quite shocked that when it came time to vote for "We Ran," how many negative comments they were among the group and how much Springsteen-bashing went on. One of my favorite songs on "We Ran" is " I Go to Pieces" and, again, I was shocked at a) how quickly it was voted off, and b) the negative comments aimed at it. This is one of those seemingly simple songs that breaks my heart listening to it.

Here were the Top Ten from that game of all of Linda's albums:ronstadt-linda.com/v-web/bulletin/velco2/viewtopic.php?t=7587&highlight=album+game1. Try Me Again
2. Long Long Time
3. Desperado
4. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress
5. Adios
6. I Can't Let Go
7. I Can't Get Over You
8. Cry Me A River
9. Poor Poor Pitiful Me
10. The Waiting
This actually would make a great "Best Of" album. Unfortunately the number one Ronstadt song of her fans here is not even on youtube so I posted her number 1 famous fan's version, Trisha Yearwood.

I'm suprised "walk away rene," didn't make it off of AFH.. I don't remember voting or seeing that option.. That is because that was in your past life of Lucy. When we reincarnate our memories are erased. We went through every song on every album and came up with the #1 song on each album and then we took all of those songs and gradually eliminated them all until we came up with the number one song. The order listed here is in the proper elimination order as Try Me Again and Long Long Time were the two left standing and Try me Again won out mostly because (I think) Linda had written it herself plus it is a great song.

I certainly wouldn't bash either "If I Should Fall Behind" or "I Go To Pieces", and I don't think I myself ever did that on the other board. In the case of "If I Should Fall Behind", I think if there was any bashing of the Boss going on, it was not directed at Springsteen himself but at those in the rock press (Dave Marsh the most prominent among them) who believe that all should kiss the ground that he walks on. I just don't buy that kind of orthodoxy, especially considering the biggest critical mouthpiece of the orthodoxy's source.
But I do know that I've gone out of my way to declare We Ran the most criminally under-appreciated album of any that Linda ever did in her life, because I believe that's what it is.

I was excited (as usual with a linda release) and loved the album as soon as I got it. such diversity and she sounds great on it despite being quite ill at the time. people don't give her credit for being very active for a sick person but of course focus on the negative physical consequences (her appearance) she encountered. eddiejinnj

Time's bleaching the past but thanks to Utube that brings back all those memories that are part of ourselves. I'm not as romantic as others and my best remembrance of the 70's is (You re no good).
This song was very ahead of its time, specially the instrumental part.

Ronstadt was hardly short of saying she didn't care for We Ran while she was promoting it. A shot in the foot if you as me. I am not one to find fault in her disconnect with her pop/rock hits. I also realize she was ill while recording We Ran. We Ran didn't stand a chance with lack of promotion and Ronstadt's lack of enthusiasm in it.

I remember seeing her at the Universal, er, Gibson Amphitheatre, when she did the tour coinciding with "Feels Like Home." And then she did another when "Dedicated to the One I Love." So, I actually think she did more for "Feels Like Home" than "We Ran." For "Feels Like Home" she sung "The Waiting" on both Letterman and Leno, and I believe "The Blue Train" on Regis and Kathie Lee. The decades just keep on rollin'.

If I remember correctly didn't she perform almost all of side one of Winter Light and that flowed into much of side one from FLH? Did I dream that? I attended all three shows in CA on the FLH tour but my memory of the set list is not real clear anymore...the decades do just keep rolling, with each year faster than the last.
I remember attending a benefit concert in NJ just over the bridge from NYC a couple months after the release of We Ran and I don't remember her performing much if anything from We Ran.

Mike, I also saw Linda on the "Feels Like Home" tour. I know my memory is not great with each passing year. But I feel like she did the first seven songs off of "Feels Like Home," starting with "The Waiting." And I remember her also singing "Heartbeats Accelerating" and "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and a number of other songs from "Winter Light." But that is sort of my point and question. I think she sang so many "Winter Light" songs because she didn't tour for that album. Did she maybe do one show in New York or did she just do appearances on TV?

The Feels Like Home concert Linda did at Radio City in 1995 was my favorite Linda concert and an absolute life highlight. She did start with several songs from FLH and then song several songs from her vast catalogue. It was almost a Greatest Hits show, except that several rarities were also included (The Moon is a Harsh Mistress was a definite highlight). In all, she song for well over two hours without an intermission - I believe the set list was 25 songs. Having Valerie Carter was a highlight as well Andrew Gold on piano.

I was at the radio city show. hated the pic of her with a lot of eye makeup sitting by a tree they had up. sorry, but it is a kinda of blurry picture that in ways doesn't even look like her. anyway, the show was awesome. like you said rob, it was a show to remember. was a long show. she looked and sounded great. eddiejinnj

Did she perform "Long Long Time" at Radio City on the FLH tour? I thought I read that somewhere, again, I dream once in a while about her so at my age I might be a bit confused.

Quote by Rick:
With respect to Winter Light, she promoted it on TV; but when she could have been touring for it in the winter of 1993-94, she was instead touring with the mariachis, which to me made absolutely no sense whatsoever.
She did a lot of the Winter Light songs at the Universal Amphitheatre on the Feels Like Home tour, which I remember well, having attended that 1995 concert (the first of three times I would see her). She may still have been too ill to do any kind of touring for We Ran in 1998.
I just know in my heart, however, that that entire decade of the 1990s was the one where Linda was basically forgotten. I feel guilty using "If I Should Fall Behind" in this context, but it almost seemed as though she did fall behind, and there was no audience waiting for her at the end.
