The revolving roster of establishment celebrity types was likely the idea of the network. You know, they probably didn't want to offend Mr.and Mrs. America - Middle America, and the Americans in the deep south with the long haired rock bands who were allegedly anti-establishment types. They needed the establishment types to sell middle and deep southern America on the idea that the artists they were seeing (if they were watching the program with their kids) were not bad people. Course, the idea probably didn't work as I remember many older adults having negative opinions about long haired musicians, including that they were druggies, gay or criminal types. They scoffed at the idea that any of the rock musicians or singers could be wealthy from their recordings.
What was ironic was that the establishment did sort of get used to the idea of not only long haired musicians, but also guys with long hair, period. So much so that the establishment was far more scared of the skinheads who would come along in the late 70s and 80s. But, maybe they were and are more scared of change of any kind because they don't know what is going on.
Slide, I agree with what you said. I think that back in the day people like my parents would have bitched at seeing Herman's Hermits or The Kinks or The Byrds with their long hair but somehow would have watched because of Jack Jones, etc.
The producer of the series, Gary Smith, is interviewed in the present day. And he said that of all of the hosts that Sammy Davis Jr. was the only one who was able to actually sing anything and perform with the singers of the day in a contemporary way.
When I saw Dionne Warwick singing "Reach Out for Me," I did wonder if some of the segments were edited out in the Deep South, just as Motown used to make album covers that didn't feature the faces of its artists on LPs sold in the South.
