According to Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Tonight_Show_Starring_Johnny_Carson_episodes_(1983), this occurred 30 years ago today: I absolutely love this interview. Linda is so charming, beautiful and loquacious while Johnny was absolutely funny. I particularly like the question about what type of guy she likes and her looking at the Tonight Show band. "Any honest musicians over there?" And the compliments were spot on. Interesting that this is one of the first clips I watched of Linda on youtube as I was discovering the greatness of her late last year. Mostly too because of the live performance of Get Closer. Great seeing Gold, Kortchmar, Glaub, Dugmore, Kunkel playing. I think Edwards is doing backup as well.

I love this interview, too! Gosh, I can't believe it was 30 years ago. Linda was spot-on in voice, looks, charisma. She was just breaking into her "MILF" period as she was no longer the 60s hippie-chick or the 70s California waif. She was on fire! Other than her tiger growls and the signature time rhythm, Get Closer is just an OK song and shouldn't have been released in my opinion. The fact that they turned it into a toothpaste commercial makes it even less appealing to me. I always thought "I Knew You When" should have been the first release. Probably would have made the album sell better out of the gate.

It should also be said (and I know first-timers to this board might find this difficult to believe) that this appearance of hers was only the second time ever that she appeared on The Tonight Show during Johnny's 30-year run. The only time before this was in July 1969, when he still did the show from 30 Rock in New York (he moved it to "beautiful downtown Burbank" in May 1972).

This is perhaps my favorite interview of Linda. She was beautiful, sexy, cute, quirky, charming, and so intelligent. It was funny how she rambled on.......Johnny got confused at one point. His responses and facial expressions were hilarious. I think he also had a crush on Linda as well......just like most of us men, including me. He complimented Linda on her great eyes and nice legs. Who could blame him? She was one SMOKIN' HOT chick!

Listen to the part she is rambling about the architecture and listen closely to Johnny's reply and the audiences applause after he says something about the sound getting to the audience. What do you all think? Begin around 7:25 and what is Johnny talking about, the only mistake they made was allowing the sound from the stage to hit the audience, he is not talking about Get Closer, the song she did prior to the interview? If he is that was an insult of the song/performance. I think that is the best performance of the song. More rock than that cheesy sound the recorded and most other live versions I am familiar with.

Mike, he's probably referring to some bit they did earlier.. probably a skit or something that didn't go over well.. I don't think he was talking about Linda's performance.

Mike, he's probably referring to some bit they did earlier.. probably a skit or something that didn't go over well.. I don't think he was talking about Linda's performance. That is correct. He was referring to the Believe It or Stuff It bit that didn't work out too well. So he was joking that too bad the sound reached the audience during that bit.

Well, I guess they could have used 'Get Closer' as a b-side instead of an a-side for a single or something, but 'The Price of Love' should have been on the album instead in my opinion. 'Lies' always sounded like an obvious choice for a first single to me. It's sorta the same type of song as 'How Do I Make You' which had been a top 10 hit. 'I Knew You When' would have been better than 'Get Closer' as well.

Quote by jhar26:
I guess, then, that "Get Closer" is a "guilty pleasure" of mine, although I do agree about "Lies" as well; and yes, "The Price Of Love" (a perfectly obscure mid-60s Everlys song) should have been included on the album. The way I look at it, though, if any of us (myself included) knew what constitutes a "hit" by anybody, then we'd probably be in the music business, and we might be millionaires by now.

"Lies" rocks. Perhaps better appreciated out of context of the album. Great drums and guitar work in addition to Linda's aggressive vocal.
