Helen Reddy has come out of retirement. I must confess to Helen having been my favorite female singer - until I heard Linda and then Helen had to step down from her place of honor:)
I am looking forward to seeing her here in Florida in March. I checked out you tube and while her voice has also changed she still sounds good. Our tickets include a meet and greet so I hit EBAY today for some promo pics to have signed:)

I saw Helen Reddy tonight. She sounded better to me than she did in the '70s. I had a couple of LPs by her but I never considered her a favorite. Her concert tonight was amazing. I would recommend this ticket.

So glad to hear it was a great show. I am looking forward to this very much. What was included in her set list?
I highly suggest Helen's "Center Stage" CD which I beleive was her last studio recording. It is fantastic.
Did she have a band last night? last time I saw Helen - probably 12 years ago at a benefit for a Catholic school in LA - she sang live to computer backing tracks - was quite interesting.

Helen had a 4 piece band- electric guitar, bass, drums, and piano.
She did a smattering of her hits, and a lot of her album cuts, over a period of about 90 minutes. She introduced almost every song with a story or anecdote about the writer or what it meant in her life. Her voice was in great form throughout the concert, and she really worked the entire stage.
As she introduced each song, she got into the habit of saying, "Oh I like this one" so when she started to introduce one song, someone in the audience yelled out- Do you like this one? - which made her tell a story about a song she did not like that she did not sing anymore. (It's also one of her songs that I deliberately left off my ipod.) That was funny. Her interaction with the audience was a major part of the show.
I really enjoyed her performance of "I Am Woman" as poetry-- she later came back and sang it as an encore.
Back in the day, I liked Helen Reddy, but I didn't consider her a favorite. I think I bought her first two albums. I might have missed some good music there.

Quote by Partridge:
I think it is easy (far too much so) to either take someone like her for granted, or to dismiss her as the product of a "quainter" age. But she did a lot of good stuff.
I even forgave her for her stiff role as a nun (YIPE!) in the 1974 disaster film AIRPORT 1975.

Tony you were spot on with your comments. I finally got to see Helen on Saturday night here in FL. She was wonderful. Her voice sounded no different than it did 30 yeas ago. I have seen Helen many times over the years and what struck me on Saturday was how much fun she seemed to be having on stage. I mentioned to her after the show how good it was ot hear her voice again and she commented that she really was enjoying herself - that really came through in her performance. It was also great to hear some of the non-hit album tracks live. Attachments:

She's made some memorable music. I particularly like her version of Kenny Rankin's Peaceful.

Did Helen tell that story about the one song she no longer sings? I sort of felt like that was an off-the-cuff and unrehearsed bit, but she was so easy-going onstage that it's hard to tell.
She said, "I won't sing it, but I'll tell you the words. I want you to know I didn't write this song, and I don't think the guy who did lost much sleep over it either. The words are
Leave me alone, Won’t you leave me alone? Please, leave me alone, Now leave me alone, Oh, leave me alone, Please leave me alone, Yes leave me, Leave me…
and then it continues
Leave me alone, Won’t you leave me alone? Leave, leave me alone, Now leave me alone, Go, leave me alone, Please leave me alone, Oh, leave me, Leave me…"
I've always disliked that song too. I put a lot of Helen Reddy on my ipod but left that one off. Maybe her record company was trying to push songs about crazy girls on her... Angie Baby, Delta Dawn, Ruby Red Dress...

She did not tell the "Leave Me Alone" story. Tha is funny.
She did totally space out on the lyrcis to Angie Baby after the first verse. It was pretty funny and she was laughing as well. Someone in the front row had her greatest hits LP (in vinyl) so she gave her the lyrics from the album sleeve:)
I think Peaceful was the only song I would have loved added to her set list - and maybe You're My World as well.

I kind of liked that Leave Me Alone song. Maybe she looks at it as being too negative in hindsight kind of like Maria Muldaur sees You're No Good, thereby allowing Linda Ronstadt to record it even though it had been out for a decade. That was really nice of her.

Yeah, I liked me some Reddy back in the day, and still do, especially Angie Baby and I Don't Know How to Love Him.
BTW, Ruby Red Dress is the name of the"leave me alone" song, in case there was any question. And, Jesus, I don't blame her for leaving that one alone...
Great photo, Rob!
