I saw this too.
In a way, it is a touch disheartening, as it was in 1978, when Zubin Mehta, who basically put the L.A. Philharmonic on the map in the 1960's and 1970's during his time as Music Director, left for New York as well. Nevertheless, Dudamel's reputation of helping the L.A. Phil evolve in the 21st century has been exceptional, especially in the way of both introducing new works and invigorating long-standing "warhorses".
It remains to be seen, of course, who is going to fill Dudamel's shoes, since three years can go by in what seems like the blink of an eye. But it will still be worth watching out for.
