I had decided not to watch The Last of Us because the previews have a zombie feel and I zoned out of The Walking Dead years before they wrapped it up. But now I will check it out. Do I begin with the first episode or just jump into the Ronstadt episode?

I watched the last video above about the episode and they say it is from Linda's debut album, HS,HG. Wrong but publicity for that album I would think.

Tony — this episode is pretty much a standalone one. The two main characters only appear in this one episode.
I, too, gave up on TWD after a few seasons, but this show, so far, feels different, and is worth your time.

"The last of Us" is a great series so far, actually. Definitely not your typical "zombie" show. This episode about regret, love, and lost love was so poignant. The ending was spot on.... The main character is driving off with his young ward in the car, and the girl, fascinated by being in a car for the first time and everything in it, inserts a cassette into the cassette player (remember those??) and he starts to tell her to take it out when he realizes who is playing "Oh no wait. Leave it, Leave it. This is good". "This is Linda Rondstadt" "Do you know who Linda Ronstadt is?" Indeed, Linda’s Greatest Hits is up to number 25. Before last night, neither of these records was on anyone’s radar.
“Long Long Time” was not a big hit in 1970. It sort of came back when it was included on Linda’s first greatest hits collection after “You’re No Good” launched a string of top 10 hits beginning in 1973. “Long Long Time,” “Silver Threads and Golden Needles,” and “Different Drummer” all caught up with Linda’s Peter Asher-produced smashes like “Heat Wave” and “Blue Bayou.”

After Linda Ronstadt's 1970 song "Long Long Time" was used during the Jan. 29 episode of HBO's The Last of Us, it saw a 4,900% increase in streams on Spotify. According to the streaming service, the song saw the spike between 11 p.m. and midnight ET, right after the episode aired. The song was used in a scene featuring Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett), two men who form a relationship in the midst of a global pandemic. After Bill allows Frank into his home, Frank notices his piano and rummages through the sheet music in his bench. He finds The Best of Linda Ronstadt, turns to a page, says, "Oh my god, it's my favorite," and starts playing. The song, of course, is "Long Long Time." He doesn't make it very far, however, as Bill stops the off-key performance saying, "Not this song, not this song." Frank gets up and insists that Bill performs the song instead, which he does, reluctantly. "Love will abide, take things in stride," he sings. "Sounds like a good advice, but there's no one at my side / And time washes clean, love's wounds unseen / That's what someone told me, but I don't know what it means." Bill finishes the performance singing, "I think I'm going to love you for a long, long time." The song is later played as Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), years later, pull out of Bill and Frank's home after recovering a car left behind by the pair. "Long Long Time" then plays over the end credits of the episode. The song, which spent 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970 and earned Ronstadt a Grammy nomination, might now be preparing for a similar trajectory to Kate Bush's "Running up That Hill (A Deal with God)." Used during a pivotal moment during the fourth season of Stranger Things, Bush's song catapulted all the way inside the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2022—over 36 years since its release in 1985. I’d love to know what Linda thinks of all the attention. Likely some version of what she said about “Long Long Time” in Esquire (October 1985)—“I think my phrasing was horrible. I think I kind of butchered it.”

Would this have happened had she not sold the rights to her recordings and image? I think the reason we are seeing and hearing more of Linda Ronstadt is because she sold the rights to her image/music. At her age, situation, and for us diehards, I’m feeling it was a good thing. The last ten years have been great, and since she sold rights of music/image we are seeing them be used often, and it’s working. Regardless of Linda’s health issues, it was bound to happen. People just needed to be reminded/or informed.

I think I kind of butchered it.” Rob, my friend Don says his favorite version is her performance of it seen in “Sound of My Voice.” Other members here said that is from “The Dick Cavett Show.” My friend feels she really “sells the song” there. |

Even better than the original is the live Troubadour version on the Capitol Years comp.
Her control is stronger, her phrasing surer, and when she hits the climax her voice fills the room and rebound off the walls, leaving the audience momentarily stunned.

The fact that Linda may not see a whole lot of money from the song's use, considering it was Gary White who wrote it and gave it to her back in 1969, is disheartening though predictable. But in the end, it may very well lead to the kind of resurgence in her visibility (even in retirement) that we've been hungering for in the age of Swift and Beyoncé. As for the proposed LR bipic--well, as MSNBC's Rachel Maddow famously says, " Watch this space". I've made this suggestion before, but one of the actresses that should be considered is....  Rachel Zegler, whose luminous performance as Maria in Steven Spielberg's 2021 reimagining of West Side Story is one for the ages (IMHO). |

I am worried about this biopic idea. It just seems like the chances of it turning out to be cheesy is heavy IMO. I hope if they do it they do it well. I just don’t see it being anything more than another Selena at best as far as quality. These usually never work out well. Who knows, maybe more like Elvis bio as far as quality. All we can do is hope. Looks AND voice is so important when it comes to Linda, as well as good acting, directing, and cinematography. Then to fit her story into two hours and do her justice…it’s a big order for sure. And following the story arc of the Simple Dreams Memoir would be redundant and could lead to overexposure if they decide to follow the memoir like the documentary The Sound of My Voice did. And lip syncing to Linda’s vocals will lead to cheese IMO. James Keach seems to be involved with it. He did a great job on her documentary so maybe I should have more trust in the possibility of it being done well. |

If the biopic is completely vetted by Linda, hopefully it will be of high quality and an accurate portrayal. I'm glad Linda didn't say anything negative about the way she sung "Long Long Time," and just just commented about what a great song it is. But of course, it wouldn't nearly be as memorable if anyone else had recorded it. I'm up to the 3rd episode of "The Last of Us" and looking forward to hearing how the song is woven into the storyline.

As far as Linda having the ability to green light the project I find hard to believe. She signed over her control of her image when she sold it. Who knows, maybe her being able to yes/no the project is a reality, it seems unlikely to me.

I saw in comments that it is hoped Linda will get a big payday for this new publicity. Won't it be who bought her catalogue that would make any money off this? I guess i should have read whole updated thread before asking question, lol

I’m not sure that selling her catalog means that she sold rights to control of her image/life story. She did sell control of her image, it was listed when it was reported she sold the rights to her catalog recordings and it mentioned the sale of her image as well, to what degree I am not sure. |
